I think the 1" hallway mentioned at the end could be solved easily enough by making the tile be the same size as the others, but put the hallway smack dab in the middle of the tile. It will be offset, but is shouldn't be to big of a leap. The extra area could just be painted black or any other color you might use as 'negative' space. Great ideas all around.

A like button for you. The route ive gone for my tiles is to simple always works in powers of 3. 3x3, 6x6, 9x9, 3x6, 3x9, etc. "Walls" are then constructed half an inch thick. This way even on my 3x3/6/9 "hallway" tiles, theres a solid 2" of space between the walls, for larger creatures to get through. When I grid up a map, each grid box represents one 3x3 tile. This way all my maps line up super easy. I also bounce back and forth between using grids, and just measuring (Have a small collection of "distance" sticks) Looking forward to more videos from you :)

Well done with this. Great video and great argument for the construction design. I'm giving my players of my TT game in-game bonuses they can use if they help me construct all the 1.25 squares I need. We've made enough to construct about four square game tiles so far. Keep the videos coming!

Absolutely right. on. target. I reached the same conclusion even just with using battlemats way back when figure companies started creeping in with their 28mm and 30mm figures, and definitely once D&D3.0 imposed the now-industry-standard 1" = 5ft scale onto basically all D&D products. Too cramped. Our group is slightly experimenting and testing out the possible use of dungeon tiles, and we have also concluded that 1.25" seems to be the way to go. We're still debating the overall tile width and wall placement for the various reasons you list for both alternatives.

This is great. I've been encountering the same issue in designing my own version. I too came up with this as a solution. I am designing a solution using walls of various shapes & sizes, on the sides of 2" x 2" bases. This works a treat except for shared walls under certain circumstances, where I need to employ odd sized floor sections. Still working on it.
@circlingoverland43647 жыл бұрын
I like this idea and will likely be using your methods for my future crafting endeavors. You addressed one situation in which it breaks down is the narrow 5' hallway. This can be solved by a special 1.25xN wall-less tile which is understood to have walls. There is also an issue on the other end of the size spectrum. You showed medium and large bases in your demo. A 3x3 huge base should also work fine, but a gargantuan base is 4x4 and on your tile system that would be a full inch short. A 5x5 colossal base would be "gargantuan" on your board. Granted these two size categories are far rarer in use so it's not a common problem; would you recommend simply re-basing larger minis to fit the grid or some other method to address the "error" in scale?
@WylochsArmory7 жыл бұрын
As for larger bases, you nailed it: use case is so rare that I just don't address it. As for single-space corridors: kzbin.info/www/bejne/kIvdeYVseMuCjJI&

Have you considered using removable walls ? Example: Run a game on a mat (2x3ft) that is textured to the area (stone, underground cavern, grasslands, sand, etc....) and lay down walls, doors and such using the carboard cutout designs you've mentioned (width) and place along the space as you go. Granted, this may not lend exactly to the gridsystem in large display of maps (as you've indicated with Undermountain example) but it works for single room and extensions where shared walls are that big of an issue. This allows me to reuse walls/doors as each space requires. Just curious to hear your thoughts on that. I'm looking forward to watching your videos throughout my free time this week. Thanks for your contribution.
@WylochsArmory9 жыл бұрын
+Phalen Anjel You sure could do that - as long as the squares are 1.25" and the wall pieces are 1/4" wide, the math works the same. But I just really like the tactile feel of tiles, so that's what I build. I like that I can look at a square on the map and know that's a single tile, just go to the rack and pull it out.

Something else to consider: often minis have props or weapons that stick out beyond the base. And it's impossible to place 2 minis next to one another when this happens. One always stands crooked.

+bigmiller19 Thanks for your viewership! This question comes up a lot. But I believe there isn't a standard answer. You might design dungeons very differently than me. Here is what I do: design my next dungeon. Build ONLY the tiles I need to make that dungeon. Run it. Design my next dungeon. Build ONLY the missing tiles missing. Run it. Continue like this...after three or four adventures you will find you no longer need to make any tiles because you have enough for anything you are likely to design.

You missed a downside: As creatures get larger, the diffference in base size starts to show itself more and more. A 5x5 creature will actually only take up 4x4 on your grid, and 4x4 creatures will start to look like it should maybe only be in a 3x3, except that that it sticksover the edges by a quarter inch. These cases are rare and can be solved by putting an adjusted cardboard circle under the mini that more closely matches the size needed to fill the space.

@@WylochsArmory I'm not sure where you're mentioning the warlock tiles in there. Bigger squares is a nice idea but I don't follow your logic of not being able to put two ten foot hallways into a twenty foot room. You can do that in real life either. Reminds me when a architect couldn't understand that we could not put an eight inch pipe in a wall 7 5/8" thick. I get that it makes record keeping simpler for mapping, but I don't see it being much of an issue. But I enjoy the videos.
@WylochsArmory8 жыл бұрын

As far as the 2 hallways go, on the map there's 3 walls represented , those two tiles you keep trying put together to replicate it on a battle map have 4 walls. So you need to make side by side hallway tiles with 3 walls instead of 4 walls. WIth Hurtz this is easy solved, some DF tiles have detachable walls but not all. Lastly I like to note the dire need for rpg companies to start consulting architects with their map designs, with their paper thin walls. Any wargamer to can tell ya game world scale and gaming pieces never match up 100% such is life.

Honestly didn't pay any attention to the details of the 1.25 grid because it didn't pertain to my table. I'll use a grid if it's marked out on a battle map already but for the most part I play grid free, using rulers, tape measures and string. If I really need a grid I use a grid shadow stencil of my own invention. You can check that out on my gaming channel blackbarnz it's simple you could make one in a jiff. Sorry don't have any real feedback for ya other then I enjoy your channel and keep at it.

Why not just make the walls 1/4" and place them on the outside. Accomplishes literally the same thing.
@WylochsArmory8 жыл бұрын
Incorrect. If you do that, you will create a 1/4" offset in the grid. This error will propagate throughout the rest of the map.

so you are just adding the walls to the outside of the tile like when you said it creates issues? don't get me wrong I love your videos, have crafted some stuff following your advice to the letter, but it seems to me that your solution is also the solution that you said doesn't work. what I'm trying to say makes much more sense in my head before I put it in english.

No; try watching again, at 5:15. Or, I have a much better 3D illustration of the concept here: kzbin.info/www/bejne/gIbIlIp9ZrxgqdU

Good stuff! ...but I do *hate* paper miniatures. Paint some lead to go with that great setup for God's sake! :-)

The reason you SHOULD NOT use 1.25" grids: Every square on the grid is adding an extra .25". So, a 2x2 is 2.5x2.5, a 3x3 is 3.75x3.75, but a 4x4 is really a 5x5, and now your gargantuan mini no longer fits on the grid, it will have this big border of empty space around it, and if you try to use a colossal mini, which is 5x5, it will only take up 4x4 on the grid.

Absolutely right......how many gargantuan minis do you use though, ever?

@@WylochsArmory Personally, not a lot. I do enjoy a good big monster fight in my games, though, and I mostly wanted to point out the flaw for people who do want to run higher-level games with big monsters.
