Usually, the judge when handing down the death sentence will use the statutory language: " that the prisoner be taken to such place and at such time as designated by the (warden, department of corrections, et.al) that the (method of execution) will be applied to the prisoner until he/she is dead" Thus, if any application fails the first time, it will be repeated until death is confirmed by a qualified physician present. So if the rope breaks, they'll just try again until they get it right.

Water powered gallows? I can imagine the helpless inmate squirming, trying to hold it in before he drops through the trapdoor.

The British record for an execution by hanging was 7 seconds, this was the time from the hangman walked into the cell and death , pretty quick eh ?

Thanx for the vid, especially that nasty looking gas chamber. Last summer I visited the "Trans Allegany Lunatic Asylum" or Weston State Hospital in Weston WVa. There are vids of the place on KZbin, check that place out if you get a chance.

Depends how you look at it, Americans would more than likely be strangled, compare this to a British hanging it`s quite different, in Britain you were hanged within 10 seconds of the hangman walking in the room, there is no death row, death row means you have time in between, in Britiain you were kept in a condemned cell with a false wall so you never left it, when it hit 9am the hangman would burst through the door with his assistant, you were stood up and faced at that door, whilst the false wall was removed (you wouldn`t have known it was there) the hangman placed his hands on your shoulders as his assistant pinned your hands, you were turned to face the rope, marched to it, stood on a T chalk mark, with a guard either side, hooded, the noose ( a british noose not like that rediculous thing we see here) placed around your neck the slip on your left side under your jaw, hangman steps back releases the safety pin and pulls the lever, done, no pomph, last walks for 200 meters, audiences, last words, or any of that shit, 10 seconds you were dead, 100% sucess rate, a mathmatical drop formula to ensure it, based on height weight, the hangman would arrive at 4pm the day before and build the gallows, he would weight the rope overnight to take any stretch out of it and ensure your neck was broke and you didnt bounce back up, the noose was lined with soft calf skin as to make it slip and not cause you any chaffing. Albert pierrepoint (execuioner) would walk in with a lit cigar, place it on the edge of the table in the room, and the ash wouldn not have time to drop by the time he returned, he was that quick, 7.2 seconds i think was the fastest. how long would an American hanging take 30 mins after 5-10 years on the row, once you were sentenced in Britain you were executed on the 3rd monday after. The british noose was 8 feet of rope with 2 eyes, one at each end the non noose eye would be fixed onto the mechanism abouve and the other with a brass eyelet be fixed under your chin on the left side. like i said that system we see here is all for show, all about the asthetics, i would be shitting myself incase i was strangled or decapitated, in Britain i wouldnt have time to think about it. No going up steps to the gallows, a priest was allowed but usually last right were given the night before. so he would be praying for you. this method took all the entertainment out of execution, all the politics, etc. It`s if had the choice would like to go. your gonna die, why drag it out and make it worse.

+tom bidwell Wyoming hasn't used lethal gas as a method of execution in 60 years. For most of that time the gas chamber was left in a state of severe disrepair, it was only after the old prison was reopened as a tourist attraction that it was made to make it look presentable although its non functional.
