That was great. The Way The Wyrd by Brian Bates is a great book and helps the interested get your head around these concepts.

This premise was understood even much later. Shakespeare’s ‘weird’ sisters were quite clearly using this concept.

Wyrd or Weard (weird) is cognate to dutch Waard (wierd) what means something like side or flank. For example 'uiter-waarden' is the outer-banks of a river at both sides ; the low land that drowns when the water-level is high. Waard also means polder and inn-keeper ; the person that is standby (aside) and keeps an eye , a warden or guard. Boomgaard is tree-garden what is aside or flanks a building. Vergaren is to collect or gather, for instance some watchmen (a posse or guard). Waarde is the worth of something compared (side by side) with a standard value. A sword is litterally something to carry at your side. Wierd is also a frisian first name meaning compagnion , friend, someone to trust. The shield at each side of a sail-boat is also called 'zwaard' = sword. zwaar = heavy/weary, waar = true, waren = wares, commodities. Merkwaardiig = mark-worthy/notable/aware-able . word = note/name . weird is something additional, shit what comes along. worden = to become, to generate, to create/shape the main thing. Woerd is the male-duck additional/siding with the hen. Zwoerd = the rind of a piece of bacon. wearing clothes = been added/provided with clothes. Waardering = valuation, appreciation.

You make a good teacher Connor. I found history boring at school, only got interested in my ancestry and history a few years ago. Found out I got Norway ancestry from my dads DNA test. Now I know why I love folk metal lol. Subbed.

Any thoughts? The Old Norse word "wyrd" is indeed feminine, and its concept shares similarities with the Holy Spirit, Brahman, and Tao. Wyrd represents fate, destiny, or the web of life, often personified as a goddess. Similarities with other concepts: 1. Holy Spirit (Christianity): Like Wyrd, the Holy Spirit is often depicted as a feminine, nurturing force, guiding and connecting all things. 2. Brahman (Hinduism): Brahman, the ultimate reality, is sometimes represented as a feminine, all-encompassing essence, similar to Wyrd's web of life. 3. Tao (Taoism): The Tao, the fundamental principle of the universe, is often described as a feminine, receptive, and nurturing force, akin to Wyrd's concept. Common themes among these concepts: 1. Interconnectedness: All things are connected and part of a larger whole. 2. Feminine principle: Emphasis on receptive, nurturing, and guiding qualities. 3. Transcendence: Beyond human comprehension, yet immanent in the world. 4. Holism: Encompassing all aspects of existence, from fate to the cosmos. The Norse people may have seen Wyrd as a powerful, feminine force, shaping destiny and connecting all things. This perspective resonates with the ideas of the Holy Spirit, Brahman, and Tao, highlighting the common human quest to understand the mysteries of existence and our place within the larger web of life.

Weird enough a dutch woerd is an english drake (masculine duck), the dragon/bull (horn-bearer), twin-horned snake (Ullr /eel) is to compare with hebrew/greek EL/chronos. When Chronos was castrated and became revived He was feminized as Living Earth (Gea). Odin cuts the primordial snake into pieces and shapes the universe. Similar Michael wages war on the old Dragon.

In Scandinavia Fate is fixed, you can't change it. But you can choose how it plays out. I.e. your destiny is to die on a particular day you can choose to die bravely making a difference or die a pointless death. Even the Goods can not change fate; Odin knows what will happen at Ragnarök but still builds his army and prepares for it.

"Alternate Realities"....according to some, we are in a constant state of "Choice"....moment-by-moment... The favorite phrase of what I call the 'new Spiritual Movement' is "You create your own Reality". Along with this is that you have a constant entourage of "Helpers" who give us a 'heads-up' regarding possible better choices than if we were to 'go it alone' using only our Intellect. In Tribal cultures of the American West, 'Medicine People' were available to advise and suggest choices based upon some "Higher Ability" to fortell outcomes. Divination using Tarot Cards, Runes, etc............We all want to get an 'idea' of the choices we have before us so that we can make the best decisions according to our desired outcomes..

I thought it was clearly stated in Anglo Saxon sources (the few we have sadly) that Wyrd is greatly fixed and almost impossible to change. Same as the Norse concept of Urðr. Seems a more predemerministic Wyrd aligns better to other attested Germanic beliefs over the more Vedic inspired one presented in the video.

Hello Frydsman! I teach high school in the US and my students are 16, 17, and 18 years of age so not sure if that's what you'd secondary or tertiary school since we divide school into three subgroups: elementary, middle school, and high school. At any rate, I was having trouble with the concept of wyrd and have been looking up many sources on it. You hit the nail on the head, I think I have a lucid understanding at this point! You rock!

So "fyrd" must be written with a Y or an I? Why is it with a I on the shirt?

Fyrd is definitely spelt with a 'Y', but I put an I on the shirt because I preferred the way it looked. Maybe I'll make a 'Y' variant too 😉
