My Grampa used to work for North American back then and was part of the designing crew for the X-15. He gave me a picture of the X-15 once with an autograph by Scott Crossfield, one of the X-15 pilots. Still keep that picture like a treasure. I love the X-15. :)

I think the idea was that he was calm and totally okay. They were worried about how people would react to weightlessness back then, these were some of the first tests to see what would actually happen to a person outside of gravitational pull. So it was very significant at the time.

@@justforever96 I saw an interview with Pete Night, he said she pulled 5 G's sustained, and it was the only aircraft he was relieved when the engine quit.. (btw, first man shows a switch igniting the xlr 99, but it was a throttle detent in reality).. Claimed it was very hard to work the controls with that G loading, so they modified them to work off pressure rather than movements, al la F16, for apogee and re entry phases.. Also, the fuselage would "pop" with a giant bang as it went through heating cycles, scared the half shit out of him every time, never got used to it.. also the service guys burned their hands a lot post flight as inconnel stored heat, and the fuselage was hot to the touch even hours after a flight, she was a crazy ass ship.. They did take some time lapse of her, but this footage seems about right. They said after the xlr was installed the F104's, didn't even bother lighting their burners up to give chase as it served no purpose other than to waste fuel, why bother chasing something that would blow the doors off an SR71, at it's lowest power setting (Mach 4 at 60 percent of max pressure/thrust)..

Ooops! And at the end, the narrator says, "Pilot Joe Walker"...Walker's flights that were closest to 317,000 feet were flights 77, 90, and 91, in January, July and August of 1963, but they were either above or below that stated altitude. It's possible that what you are seeing is a montage of a Joe Walker landing tied to in-flight footage from other missions like the the White/Dana missions I mentioned above. What you are seeing could be 2 or even 3 missions worth of footage.

This is just a guess, but with a peak altitude of 60 miles (according to the narrator), I'm going to guess it was flight 62 on July 17 of 1962, piloted by Robert White. It's also possible that it's flight 174, on Nov 1 of 1966 with pilot William Dana. Both of those flights were 58 and 59 miles high respectively, and according to the list of flights on wiki, they were in the top 5 highest flights. Both of those flights most closely match the stated altitude of 317,000 feet.

Quite a few people talk about it. But it is not a "real" plane, since it cannot take off by itself, and it can only fly for a few minutes before fuel is exhausted. While an SR-71 can maintain top speed for a couple hours. SR-71 also flew in "combat" of sorts, flying over enemy territory. Although I would hardly call the X-15 obscure and unrecognized. it just isn't something that all 13 year old boys know about, probably because it doesn't look like something from Batman.

No. They blackout if vertical or lateral acceleration is too high (thus causing the blood to flow to only part of the body, causing apoxia, or oxygen deprivation). Generally speaking, the problem isn't with speed, but with acceleration.

Was this for ssto / half booster-half plane missions to orbit like the shuttle?
@justforever96
@justforever96 3 жыл бұрын
No, mostly just to experiment with very high speeds and altitudes, although the data would be useful in the development of the X-20 DynaSoar. In fact, the SSTO/spaceplane concept was the earliest. They were developing a spaceplane at the time when someone came up with the novel concept of just putting a "capsule" on the end of one of our big rockets and launching a man into orbit that way, as a quicker and cheaper way to get a man into space than developing a working space plane system. X-15 pilots were contemptuous of the capsule idea, since it wasn't for "real" pilots, just test subjects. But the capsule was what was eventually adopted....and many still think it was the wrong idea.

@ShlockenheimerNator Actually, you're right. SR-71 entered service in the late 60s, while his earlier brother, the archangel, was already taking off in 1962. The YF-12 was built in the form of two prototypes during that decade, then the program died off, and they were handed off to NASA for experimental flights.
