True story: I was one of the 50 or so people to see X in Cleveland at Pirate's Cove (later Peabody's Down Under) way back when. I didn't even have to pay to get in as I was on the warm-up band's guest list. (I was the guy that drove an 18-wheel truck to the event, arriving too-late to see The Adults play). The Cleveland Band The Adults was the warm-up band. At the time I knew the original 3 members of the Adults, Crystal Gray, Rob Harpy, and Paul Michael. The 40 or so people who were left at the end of the set tried hard to get X to come back out and play an encore but we weren't successful. Later the band wrote a song about that night in Cleveland which was on their Big Black Sun album. C'mon, it was a great show even though there weren't too many people there.

way before my time. we used to go to peabodys downunder to see the later punk shows in the late 80s. during that time the fantasy was also a hotspot.

I dunno man, but I know/remember this, the early days of the 'scene' in southern California were.......special. Violent and a place for misfits. As far as we were concerned we owned punk rock, We renamed it 'hardcore' and it was ours. The Brits?..what ever man. Thanks for the Pistols and Stiff little fingers now run along and play Pogo Boy. New York? The misfits were bad ass, some Reagan Youth but that was it...New York dolls? are you kidding?...dirty hippies. The Midwest? what scene?...Much has changed...Thankfully. I mean the best punk bands in the last 10 years or so are mostly from the midwest. But those early days...we were pissed, Reagan was in, and Electric Light Orchestra was NOT going to be the soundtrack to our youthful rebellion. I couldn't be more thankful to have been there, I still remember the day all that long surfer hair was shorn away-it was just not the political situation we railed against but the whole long hair, hippie, cocaine, Led Zeppelin ethos so prevalent then. Anyway, punk found me in '82 and I never really left it, such a large part of what made me who I am today. We've all had to get on with growing up and all and while we were doing so our culture got absorbed-think how normal it is for our kids to have piercings, tattoos and so on and so forth. The Ramones in the Rock hall of fame and Rolling stone calling them one of the top 5 most influential rock bands of all times..blah blah. Funny back then, Rolling stone wouldn't give our scene the time of day and no one in Whitesnake was naming the Ramones as an influence. The good thing is, it still lives on, back underground where punk belongs, It gets harder to find the real stuff and it gets less recognizable as the newest generation does their own thing with it. They give us old timers our due, they'll ask about the old-days-the way we got down back then they look at with a reverence I can understand a little..I mean piling 20 punks into the back of a pick up truck and heading down the 91 freeway to go to a show, or the very real threat of getting beat up by cops just for being one, shows at shit-holes...the punk kids today marvel at those days, but at the end of the night, your'e still just some old school geezer and it's their thing now...move out of the way. Well done kids-it shouldn't be any other way. Oh well.....Live fast, die sometime...first I gotta pay bills and the grand kids have soccer games today. Who said punk was dead? My mini van has a Battalion of Saints sticker in the back window...right next to a decal from the Brokedowns. No my friends....it lives.

What Penelope made was a point of view flick. This WASN'T about 'the scene in LA' or even 'the scene in Hollyweird', this was what Penelope wants to tell you about the scene... Notice: Where the fuck are the Weirdos? They were LA's first Punk Rock band, (and one of the best), buuut not even a mention or a flyer. Where are the Screamers? The Minutemen? Feh, this film did as much damage to the LA scene as it did favors to the few bands shown, some of whom weren't that important. Now there are moments I find very reminicent and beautiful of the punkrock/hardcore world I lived in - in the 1980's - (and I really miss my friends from back then) though the scene out here wasn't like the scene in LA, and moments that were damned disappointing. so it goes...
