Hard disagree with Season One, which is absolutely top tier. What it lacks in focus with its mythology and low budget restrictions it more than makes up with in atmosphere and the raw chemistry between Mulder and Scully.

Yeah I always liked that episode. That and the episode "Monday", which is actually the episode right before Arcadia, which has Mulder living the same day over and over where he dies at a bank robbery. Then Agua Mala is before that, which is the episode with the older Arthur Dales where they encounter some sea monster in the middle of a hurricane down in Florida. Definitely a solid stretch of episodes.

IMO, Never Again is hardly an episode about an evil tattoo. Well, it is if you look at its most superficial side. But that is, of course, not the reason why the episode has so many fans (would you really think it was because of the tattoo?). In my opinion it touches upon Scully exploring herself aside from Mulder, her relationship with him and their untold conflicts. It's also about conflicts within herself. We see her asking the question what she really wants for herself and whether it is the same thing others would like to see in her. She did have some doubts before NA, scatterd in some episodes here and there but mostly they were concerning her faith. This episode shows her doubts profoundly. It is and was meant to be all about Scully. I was really surprised a hard core fan could see it differently. Very thorough and really well edited video! It was entertaining to watch.

Despite liking the character of Doggett quite a lot, I feel like losing Mulder and introducing new FBI agents cost the show its cohesiveness and sense of unity. I wish it had ended in season 6, placing the resolution to Samantha's case in the middle of the season and keeping it closely related to the conspiracy instead of the new-age angle of season 7, then have the finale be the sort of Two Fathers/One Son two-parter that dealt with and end point for the syndicate storyline. It would be even better if some of the episodes were switched with a few from seasons 7 and 8. I could definitely do without the sequence of Triangle, Dreamland I and II and How the Ghosts Stole Christmas, as I feel having those all in a row seriously compromised the tone of the series as a whole, specially coming right off the movie. I do like the overall tone of season 8, though. Roadrunners is a lot of fun, except for the boring epilogue, and I do have a soft spot for the John Doe episode - I even like Reyes in it! Man, Vince Gilligan really has a talent for character-driven conflict, huh? Kid has a future, I tell you.

I still really love the original run of the show and most of those seasons are pretty close together but if I had to rank all seasons, this would be my list: 11. Season 10: It ruined the mythology, with it's focus on a more earthly conspiracy instead of the connection between an invading alien species and it's connection to politics and world history. The worst episodes of the season were both mythology episodes, because of the reason stated above. The best episode imo was Ep. 3. 10. Season 11: It regained a little bit of the steam, that the original run had, though it still couldn't save the mythology, although I'd still consider "Ghouli" to be a pretty good mythology episode in enough itself. The worst episodes imo were probably again both parts of "My Struggle" and the best one imo would be Ep. 4, which showed that The X-Files could still use relevant topics when it comes to the paranormal and is therefore in my Top 10 Standalone Episodes. 9. Season 9: At that point the show lost a lot of steam and really became a little dull, even though I'm personally one of those fans who actually like the final episode. The worst episodes imo were "Jump the Shark" and "Scary Monsters", while the best episodes were "Improbable" and "Sunshine Days" which are in my Top 20 Standalone Episodes. 8. Season 8: Season 8 was pretty good. I liked both Dogget and Reyes but overall it was just a little underwhelming to me, mainly because of the first half, with a few exceptions. The worst Ep. imo was "Badlaa", because of it's rather silly concept and the best ones were episodes 20 and 21, because it finally felt like it was raising the stakes compared to earlier episodes in the season and the way the killed of Krycek was just perfectly executed. 7. Season 7: It had a lot of really great episodes and one of the best finales of the show but "Sein und Zeit" and "Closure", though emotional, was an underwhelming and somewhat contradicting ending to the Samantha-Arc. The worst Episode by far was "Fight Club" and I also dislike "Signs and Wonders". The best eisodes were "Requiem" and "Je Souhaite". 6. Season 6: It also had a lot of great episodes but it's mythology episodes are just better than those of the seasons already listed. The worst episode to me was "Alpha" and the best ones were episodes 11/12 and "The Unnatural". 5. Season 2: It had a great beginning and a great finale, it has a lot of great mythology episodes and standalone episodes, it elevated the show to something truly timeless and introduced Krycek but it also has one of my least favourite episodes and some plain boring ones. The worst episode by far is "Our Town" and the best episodes were the "Duane-Barry-Trilogy" which is in my Top 5 Mythology Episodes. 4. Season 1: A great start to an awesome show. It is the only season with one of my favourite characters and it was this season that managed to hook me for life with it's first few episodes like no other show has before or since but it's not perfect and also has one of my least favourite episodes. By far the worst episode is "Space". The best episodes were "Squeeze"/"Tooms" which is my favourite standalone episode and the finale which is in my Top 5 Mythology Episodes. 3. Season 5: It had a great start and some of the best mythology and standalone episodes and only a few not so good episodes in general. The worst episode is "Schizogeny" because it was just silly and the best episodes imo were 5/12 which are in my Top 5 Standalone Episodes and "Redux I/II" which are in my Top 10 Mythology Episodes, together with the season 4 finale. 2. Season 3: It has a great start, a great end, great mythology episodes and great standalone episodes. The only reason it's not number 1 is number 1 itself. The worst episodes are Ep. 18 and Ep. 5 because it was a little boring. The best episodes were Ep. 4 which is in my Top 5 Standalone Episodes and Ep. 20 which is in my Top 10 Standalone Episodes and Ep. 9/10 which are are my second favourite mythology episodes and Ep. 15/16 and Ep. 1/2 (including "Anasazi") which are in my Top 10 Mythology Episodes. 1. Season 4: Apart from 2 episodes this season is awesome. It's dark, it's thrilling, it has the best mythology episodes and it draws inspiration from all around the globe with it's mythology. The worst episode is "EL Mundo Gira". And the best ones are "Home" which is in my Top 10 Standalone Episodes, "Memento Mori" and "Gethsemane" (including "Redux I/II") which are in my Top 10 Mythology Episodes, Ep. 7 which is my 3rd favourite Mythology Episode and "Tunguska" and "Terma", which are not just my favourite mythology episodes but my favourite episodes in general. Damn that's long. If anyone reads this far, you deserve a cookie. Enjoy it

Season 8 was a dark season indeed but that alone isn't enough to make it a good season in my opinion, it's the point where the show really jumped the shark. The show lost half of its identity when Mulder left as Scully never really had a chemistry with Dogget just like she and Mulder had and while Scully's shift to a believer made sense after 7 years of work in the X-Files to me it felt abrupt and sudden in order to accomondate Mulder's departure and Dogget also being a skeptic like Scully. The show should've ended in season 7, continuing without Mulder was a mistake.

I still personally think that season 1 is one of the best. And I'm not saying that for nostalgia reasons, because I only got into the show a few years ago and I have no nostalgia for the show. It had its fair share of clunker episodes, but then --- so did every season. I think the the electric chemistry of Mulder and Scully and a ton of great episodes make it stand out and hold up pretty well to this day. Deep Throat is also in my opinion one of the most memorable supporting characters, and the shocking climax in The Erlenmeyer Flask makes it one of the most memorable season finale episodes of the series in my opinion. Still, I can understand why someone might place it lower on the list in favor of some of the later seasons. I think if I was doing my own list, I would go with: 1. Season 3 2. Season 1 3. Season 5 4. Season 6 5. Season 2 6. Season 4 7. Season 8 8. Season 9 9. Season 7 10. Season 11 11. Season 10

My problem with the comeback x files apart from the general dip in quality were that Gillian didn't act at all like the Scully I knew, she just seemed bored and lifeless and David put in a bit more effort but for me their performances were just so bad. I don't think I could even blame it on the characters being older, they just came across like they were tired and going through the motions. I found the comeback seasons unwatchable and cringy.

It’s incredible how there’s no accounting for taste. The interview in First Person Shooter with Mulder, Scully, and Krista Allen as Maitreya/Jade Blue Afterglow was to die for. Hollywood AD was a gem as a standalone episode with Garry Shandling as one of the greatest comedians of all time. Also, the schmaltzy part with Dogget’s son was a handicap. Robert Patrick would have the minerals to make the program a new beginning if he had made himself a one-dimensional character, like Hombre, or quirky like Liev Schreiber in his short stint with CSI. Sentimental doesn’t sell. As I say, there’s no accounting.

Thank you fro this list. Especially your comment about season 1. I am currently watching tthe show for the first time, and while i liked all alien episodes. I am kinda shocked that episode 5,6,7 are not good, and I was like... ok, i hope this will get better. Even episode 3 was ''not for me''. And I am happy, that this video confirms quality in later seasons, and also my feelings about season 1 so far.

The problem I have with season 8 is that it was the beginning of deconstructing Scully as a strong female character. The writers turned her into just another irrational, weepy female. This has nothing to do with the new characters. The whole pregnancy stuff was a huge soap opera mistake.

I think, the best of Season 8 was Redrum. An Episode about a guy, there in the begin shooted, But after that, he always jumps back a day ago. And the guy thinks he can prove his innocence because he allegedly murdered his wife and ended up in prison as a result. It is really a much too ingenious episode, which always provides surprises and is also extremely ingenious again.

My lists: 1 - S7 Top 10 Episodes: 2 - S1 1 - Jose Chung's From Outer 3 - S6 Space 4 - S2 2 - X - Cops 5 - S3 3 - Hollywood A.D. 6 - S4 4 - Musings of a Cigarette 7 - S5 Smoking Man 8 - S9 5 - Tithonus 9 - S8 6 - Arcadia 10 - S10 7 - Soft Light 11 - S11 8 - Darkness Falls 9 - Space 10 - Beyond the Sea The X-Files is my favorite show of all-time. I watched every episode on TV when it was on. I love the balance of mythology and stand-alone. And I've watched the entire show through many times. While I do like the mythology, the stand-alone episodes are much more memorable and enjoyable. And that played a large part of my season ranking. I felt the show was incredibly strong through the first 7 seasons. I still liked seasons 8 & 9. And I liked Doggett and Reyes. But I think that having to introduce the new characters interfered with the rhythm of the show. And that's the primary reason I didn't like seasons 8 & 9 as much. And I wasn't a big fan of the supersoldier storyline. Seasons 10 & 11 just felt out of place. I did enjoy seeing Mulder and Scully back together on the screen. But overall I was disappointed by those seasons. And one final note. As a lifetime lover of the paranormal, I think it's unforgivable that the X-Files never made a Bigfoot episode.

First time seeing any of your vids, really enjoyed this one. I can appreciate the way you ranked things, I'd bump season 1 a spot or two higher, personally, but it does have some downsides. I thought the show really hit its stride in season 2, then hit a "golden age" in seasons 3, 4 and 5. Afterwards they get subsequently worse, though still always some good episodes through the end.

I think your list is pretty accurate to what mine might be. Seasons 10 and 11 definitely belong in the bottom two. You're right about the mythology episodes in these seasons they are the worse, but one thing I don't think you pointed out of why I personally believe they don't work. is because they seem to revamp everything that happened for the last 9 seasons. Characters like Skinner and Kersh act like nothing in season 9 happened. Oh and the way they raped Monica Reyes' character is unforgivable. Last but not least I don't care if Chris Carter made it official but The Smoking man is not Mulder's father (or William for that matter) BILL MULDER IS FOX'S FATHER. So thats my rant on the new seasons. Your list is very interesting and kudos for putting season 8 so high on the list. It definitely is one of the scariest season especially with episodes like Patience, Roadrunners, and Via Negativa. Your top three I think is very close to what I might make it. Seasons 3 and 5 stand out as one of my favorites. Season five has my favorite episode of the entire series. "Redux II" I'm not sure how I feel about Season four as your number one spot but I can respect that. Its not that I don't like S4 I just don't know if id put it as number one, but you're right it is a dark and scary season. You mentioned Mythology eps in season five as starting to get scary well I think they did it in season 4 with Tunguska and Terma. regardless season 4 stands out on its own so i see why you would put it as number 1. having said all that I will say one thing about season 4, it has my favorite season finale Gethsemane.

Favourite show of all time, and the best of the best episodes are something that will stay with me forever. The first 5 seasons contain scenes and evolving memories like my favourite music does. For me- the "Jump the Shark" moments go off in season 6. This was a strange season to lead back the show after the excellent movie. The decision to derail the mounted drama that climaxxed with the movies soaring finale with a sling of light hearted comedy episodes was baffling. 'The Rain King" was more suited to I dunno, something that easily would have worked on Buffy. Stories became more outlandish, Scullys science was less used- and she was STILL a sceptic in UFOs, despite being rescued from one at the end of the movie. Season 6 was confused and uneven after what the movie achieved. Triangle and Drive are great, but the season disappointed me greatly at the time. Season 7 could have corrected this, but the final few episodes reached its nadir with my personal most hated episode, " Fight Club". I cannot tell you how much I hate that episode. Again, too much pissing about with self refrences, and None of the classy cool humour of genius episodes like Humbug. Everything that went wrong with the show at the time is in that piece of shit episode. S7's final episodes had None of the gripping drama that should have taken the show to a gut wrenching finale, like say, s4. But- s8 is for the most part, great in places. I loved Dogget, and "Via Negativa" is one of my all time favourite episodes. After the backlashes towards seasons 6&7 for being too lightweight , I loved s8's defiant, back to its roots bloody roots. It was like a wild dog gnashing back at the naysayers. Its underrated and fighting back. But- the 'william' arc begins here and that takes the Mythlogy to lame places. Surprised to see s1 score lower than s6. S1 is like a legengary bands debut album. Full of influence, fire and eager to fly. I have a huge nostalgia for the debut season. Seasons 2&3 are all incredible to me. Just timeless. Like my favourite albums, I will always return with something new from them. Excellent video you did here! I loved your thoughts and ideas on various episodes.

Awesome video, thanks for ranking and justifying the same. Not many people take the time to point out what worked and what didn’t. I agree with most of it. My rank as under from best season to worst. 4, 5, 3, 2, 1, 6, 8, 7, 9, 11, 10 Best mythology episodes: 1) Anasazi, The Blessing Way, Paper Clip 2) Duane Barry, Ascension, One Breath 3) Memento Mori 4) Talitha Cumi, Herrenvolk 5) Gethsemane, Redux, Redux II Best stand alone episodes (not in any particular order): Pusher, Squeeze, Irresistible, Bad Blood, Clyde Bruckman’s Final Repose, Detour, Ice, Home, Via Negativa, Triangle, Beyond the Sea, Je Souhaite, Paper Hearts, Drive, Mulder and Scully Meet the Were-Monster, Sunshine Days, Roadrunners, 4D, Familiar, Ghouli, Arcadia, Small Potatoes, The Host, How the Ghosts Stole Christmas, The Unnatural, Redrum, Audrey Pauley, Dreamland I & II …. I could go on and on I have so many. Worst of the worst: 1) Season 10 and 11 mythology. I just hated it. Wish it never existed. 2) Babylon - WTF?? 3) Fight Club - Argh! just no!! 4) 3 - Ewww! 5) Signs and Wonders - Blah! 6) Fearful Symmetry - Nope! 7) El Mundo Gira - nope again 8) Teso Dos Bichos - Uff no! And unpopular opinion I know (don’t hate me) but I didn’t quite like Jose Chung’s From Outer Space, and The Lost Art of Forehead Sweat. Didn’t hate them but not my cup of tea. Also, Dogget’s character grew on me very quickly. Season 8 was actually very good and I give a lot of credit to Robert Patrick for making John Dogget work. Could have done without Reyes though.

Seeing season 8 higher than most isn’t a great shock… but seeing it above season 2 is jarring for me personally. It’s not that Doggett is bad.. it’s that Mulder is the beating heart of the X-files. I know Scully is great, a vital character and counterpoint- but Mulder is the one, for me personally.

I just started watching this series a year ago, and I waited patiently until I finished all 11 seasons to finally watch this video so I wouldn't get spoiled on anything. So now that I finished the series, I guess I'll share my ranking for comparison. Disclaimer: (As I mentioned, I'm a relatively new X-Files fan, and I binged this all in 2021 and 2022, well after the latest season aired and finished, so I didn't have the anticipation of waiting for the new seasons to come out and continue the story like most veteran fans did. Consequently, any exciting or disappointing cliffhanger resolutions probably didn't have as great of an impact on me as they did with the people who watched it as it was being aired. Also, I've only seen most of these episodes once, so this list is VERY likely to change with time, as I have changed my opinions for some of the episodes I have rewatched.) With that said, here's my list. Number 11 (Last Place): Season 11 - Favorite Episode: The Lost Art of Forehead Sweat - Least Favorite: My Struggle III "I knew that my last place would be one of the revival seasons, only because they were shorter and much less content than the original seasons, but it was actually hard to decide which I liked more, because I like and dislike similar things about them. In the end, I chose Season 11 as the lesser of the two, because even though there were more episodes and I liked them all (aside from the first and last), I think I felt more disappointed by them than I did with Season 10's. I thought "Familiar" was great for most of its runtime, but I didn't care for the ending, and the reveal made me realize that it was just a retread of Season 7's "Chimera", even having the same culprit. I liked the concept and performances in "Nothing Lasts Forever", but in execution, it ended up being more gore porn than actual substance. And while I thought "This" and "Plus One" were fine for the most part, it felt like they were prioritizing MSR fan-service over the plots. And then there was the mythology. I thought "Ghouli" was great, but the 2 "My Struggles" I thought were bad. The first episode retconned the previous episode, and the ending made William's inception outright uncomfortable. And any previous mention of him being a miracle just feels distasteful now. The final episode I thought had good concepts on paper, but just felt rushed in execution. And they also killed off Skinner and Reyes in a disrespectful way. But overall, I did like the season despite its shortcomings. "The Lost Art of Forehead Sweat" and "Rm9sbG93ZXJz (Followers)" are two of my all-time favorites in this series, and they alone made this season worth it in my opinion, but the other monster of the week episodes were good too. And I just love seeing Mulder and Scully in the 21st century. So even though it's my least favorite season, I still enjoyed it a lot more than I thought I would." Number 10: Season 10 - Favorite Episode: Mulder and Scully Meet the Were-Monster - Least Favorite: My Struggle "I was expecting to hate this season based on reviews I saw online and the fact there were only 6 episodes, but I was pleasantly surprised. Like Season 11, I thought the mythology wasn’t good, but the monster-of-the-weeks were delightful. Episodes 2-4 I thought were some of the most solid episodes the series had produced in a while, and I liked how certain elements carried over between episodes. (Miller and Einstein from "Babylon" return for the finale, and the DNA experiments from the first episode are involved in "Founder's Mutation".) The only episode I really hated this season was "My Struggle", which is my least favorite in the whole series as of now. Nothing about it worked in my opinion, and after seeing it, I was instantly worried for the rest of the season. (Thankfully I didn’t have to worry.) Even though I think "Babylon" and "My Struggle II" aren't nearly as good as Episodes 2-4, I didn’t think they were as bad as most people think. I think for all the things that didn't work in "Babylon", there was an equal number of ideas that did or were at least interesting, like the idea of belief in something being powerful enough to make it a reality and the idea of finding common ground instead of letting differences divide people. (I'm going to get hate for this, but I thought Mulder line-dancing to Achy Breaky Heart was hilarious and is probably my most rewatched moment in the series.) And while I thought "My Struggle II" was a little rushed and disappointedly ended on a cliffhanger, it did deliver the alien virus pandemic that had been built up since the earlier seasons, and I thought it was very cool to finally see it. (Too bad it got retconned.) And I really liked the brighter and colorful look of this season, and I didn’t think it looked “too clean” as mentioned in the video. Again, I was torn on whether I liked Season 10 or 11 more, and I might switch them in the future, but for now I think I like Season 10 slightly more. And honestly, had these two seasons just had more content, they might have made it higher in my ranking, as I didn’t think they were all bad.” Number 9: Season 1 - Favorite Episode: Ice - Least Favorite Episode: Shapes "I know people will disagree with me (and that's fine), but the first season, while good, just felt weaker to me than the seasons that came after it. I agree with most of the points mentioned in the video. A lot of the episodes felt a little generic or boring, the mythology wasn't truly realized yet, and the budget felt lower than the seasons to come. For me, I also felt like the pacing in the first season's episodes was, on average, very sluggish. There were several times where I felt like the episodes dragged on a bit too long. Some of the episodes felt a little too same-y, such as “Shadows,” “Born Again,” and “Roland,” (even though I didn’t dislike them individually), and some episodes were just flat out terrible as mentioned in the video. But with that said, this season also delivered some of my favorites in the series. To name two, "Ice" (the episode that hooked me on the series) was fantastic and a case where the slower pacing worked to its benefit. And "Eve" made great use of misdirection with its culprit and had a very layered story compared to others this season. Overall, I did enjoy the good episodes of this season enough to have a positive opinion of it, but I think the following two seasons did a much better job of really getting me invested in the show. It's better than the revival seasons in that it feels more organized and has more content, but I think it's the weakest of the original seasons personally. Again, my opinion may change if I rewatch a few more of its episodes, but that’s just my impression from my initial series experience." Number 8: Season 9 - Favorite Episode: TrustNo1 - Least Favorite Episode: Jump the Shark "I thought the first five episodes of this season were flat out "meh", but after that, it got considerably better. I thought there were some solid episodes this season with "Improbable", "John Doe", and "Scary Monsters" being the first that come to mind. I know people hate this season for Mulder's absence, but even though I love Mulder, I liked Doggett and Reyes enough to where I didn't mind his absence. And I already knew Mulder was going to return for the finale going in. In a way, I wish the creators just made Mulder and Scully recurring characters and Doggett and Reyes the stars, as I genuinely wanted to see more of them and thought they had good budding chemistry that could have blossomed into something as beautiful as Mulder and Scully's if given the time. Episodes like "Audrey Pauley" "4-D" and "Release" evidenced this the most. But I am aware that was unlikely as Mulder and Scully represented the X-Files, and they probably would have lost all viewership if they got rid of Scully too. The mythology this season felt weak, especially compared to Season 8, which had a cohesive mythology with a solid conclusion. But I enjoyed "TrustNo1" a lot (probably unpopular opinion), which I thought utilized Scully very well and had tense emotional drama. I also loved that "Provenance" brought back the alien artifacts that were introduced in Season 6/7 then were kind of just forgotten about. The only episode I flat out disliked this season was "Jump the Shark", but even then, it wasn't as bad as some other seasons’ bad episodes to me. Overall, I thought it was a solid season dragged down by a weak start, a somewhat confused mythology, and a low episode count. Number 7: Season 7 - Favorite Episode: X-Cops - Least Favorite Episode: Sein und Zeit (Although I may change my mind on a rewatch) "I agree with most of the points in the video. This season felt a little confused on where to go after the Syndicate's demise, and while it introduced the alien artifacts in an interesting way, the writers kind of just abandoned them until season 9, making the mythology feel subpar. But while there were episodes I didn't like this season, I felt like the good outweighed the bad. I thought Vince Gilligan’s episodes were especially great this season, and I don't dislike the unpopular episodes like "Fight Club" and "First Person Shooter" as much as most fans seem to. I also enjoyed how Mulder and Scully seemed to gradually accept their feelings and got closer to each other this season. It felt a little accidental, but I noticed it in episodes like "Millenium", "En Ami", and "all things" which was nice. It was noticeable enough to where I could believe that Scully would ask Mulder to donate his sperm for her as seen in “Per Manum’s” flashback that (probably) took place this during season. And even though the mythology wasn't cohesive, I enjoyed each of the episodes’ stories on an individual level. It's a mess, but it still retains the good elements of the seasons that came before it." (continued in a reply)

(continued) Number 6: Season 5 - Favorite Episode: The Post-Modern Prometheus - Least Favorite Episode: Chinga "Season 5 had some great monster-of-the-week episodes that oozed with character and creativity, and I actually enjoyed "Kill Switch" and "Kitsunegari" a lot, contrary to what was said in the video. The main problem for me this season was that I really didn't like the mythology episodes. “Patient X” and “The Red and The Black” were great, but everything else disappointed me. I thought "Redux" was a poor season opener with the way it felt like a conclusion for season 4 rather than a premiere setting the direction for season 5. And I didn't like the way it tried to make Mulder believe that the aliens were a hoax, especially when he would continue to meet other paranormal people and creatures for the rest of the season and be just as much a believer. (My Struggle 1 tried doing a similar thing, which is one of the reasons why I dislike that episode). I also thought the way he revealed Blevins as a mole was very disappointing as he just guessed it without presenting any reasoning. "Christmas Carol" was an unpleasant episode for me, as I didn't like how Scully just ignored her family during the holidays to invade the privacy of another family and unintentionally get them killed, even if there was suspicious activity afoot. "Emily" kind of felt like a weaker retread of "Memento Mori" that ended by just returning everything to the status quo. I didn’t feel like I learned anything that wasn’t already revealed in “Memento Mori” or other mythology episodes, and by this point, I was very tired of the mythology relying on female characters dying in a hospital for drama. This was the sixth or seventh time they did that. And while I thought "The End" was okay, I thought it introduced more plot elements than it tried providing closure to other ones. If they had ended the show there, I would have been very disappointed, especially since it had almost nothing to do with the movie that followed it. And there were a few other episodes that I didn’t like, such as “Schizogeny” and “Travelers,” but most of the other episodes were near-immaculate in my opinion, which bumps the season up in my ranking. If I had liked the mythology more, this probably would be ranked a lot higher on my list. It might’ve even been my favorite season. Number 5-3: Three-way tie between Season 2 - Favorite Episode: Duane Barry - Least Favorite Episode: Fearful Symmetry Season 3 - Favorite Episode: Paper Clip - Least Favorite Episode: The Walk And Season 4 - Favorite Episode: Musings of a Cigarette Smoking Man - Least Favorite Episode: Elegy “It’s hard for me to decide between these 3 seasons, as they’re all awesome and I go back and forth between them. I think Season 2 has a fantastic first third, a decent middle third, and a last third that fluctuates between great episodes and awful episodes. Of these three seasons, I think it has the best mythology episodes. Seasons 3 and 4 explored the aliens and the Syndicate much more, but Season 2’s conflicts I felt were a lot more personal between Scully’s abduction, Samantha’s false return, and everything that happened to Mulder in “Anasazi.” This season grabbed me much better than season 1 did with excellent episodes like “The Host,” “Blood,” “Irresistible,” and “Humbug” just to name a few. But at the same time, some of my least favorite episodes in the series are in this season, as well as several episodes that I feel are good, but could have been a lot better and end up being a little disappointing. I have a hard time placing this season as a result. Season 3’s opening was very strong with “The Blessing Way/Paper Clip” continuing and concluding the season 2 finale in spectacular fashion. But aside from the humorous episodes, the other stand-alone episodes of the first half of the season were just kind of average to me. I still liked some of them, but they didn’t grab me as much as season 2’s. I also thought the first episodes in the mythology two-parters (“Nisei” and “Piper Maru”) tended to be good, but less interesting than the second episodes (“731” and “Apocrypha”.) But in the second half of the season, I felt the non-Darin Morgan episodes got better (with a few duds). “Pusher,” “Avatar,” and “Wet-Wired” were very engaging, and by the end of the season, I was able to have a much more positive opinion of it. I think the humor in some of the stand-alone episodes really gave a nice contrast to the equally satisfying intenseness of the mythology episodes. As for season 4, I liked how dark the episodes could get. I thought the mythology had some interesting episodes, but I liked the ones in season 2 or 3 more on average. I think part of that might be because they killed off X (one of my favorite characters) and replaced him with Marita Covarrubias, a character who I feel could have been good, but the writers never figured out how to use her. Also, I knew Scully wouldn’t die from cancer since there were 7 more seasons after this and I knew she was still in them, but I still appreciated the way her cancer was introduced. And had I been watching the series as it was being released, I probably would have been much more affected by it. Contrary to season 3, I thought season 4 was strong in the first half, but fizzled out in the second half for me. The quality of the episodes I disliked wasn’t as bad as the ones in season 2 and 3, but I felt there was greater quantity of them. (“Teliko,” “Sanguinarium,” “Gethsemane,” “Unrequited,” “Synchrony,” to name a few.) Nevertheless, the episodes I did like: (“Small Potatoes,” “Home,” “Paper Hearts,” “Zero Sum,” to name some) I thought were very strong, and boosted the season for me. I’m putting these three seasons in a tie for this comment, but if you forced me to choose between them right now, I’d probably order them: Season 4, Season 3, and Season 2 in ascending order of quality. (continued again) Number 2: Season 8 - Favorite Episode: Essence/Existence - Least Favorite Episode: Badlaa “I’m going to get hate for this, but I loved Season 8. After Season 7 felt confused on where to go, this season felt completely in control of its direction. I was excited to see a new member join the X-Files, and while it took a few episodes for me to like Doggett, I thought his presence was a welcome and fresh evolution for the show. It kind of felt like the first 7 seasons were all one big season and I had finally moved to a new one where things were different. Personally, I thought this season had the best mythology in the series. Mulder’s abduction and Scully’s pregnancy made the stakes feel more personal than any of the previous seasons, especially since they seemed to finally accept their love for each other in Season 7. I know some people don’t like Season 8 because Mulder was missing for most of it and Scully couldn’t be as active because she was pregnant, but when Mulder was around for the second half, I thought things got exhilarating, and personally, I think this season has some of Gillian Anderson’s most profound acting moments as Scully. I also really liked how the last episodes called back upon elements previously introduced in the season for a cumulative finale with an actual conclusive ending rather than ending on a cliffhanger. It wrapped up just enough things to be satisfying while also leaving enough things open for the chance of another season. I like Seasons 9-11, but the Season 8 finale was the closest thing the X-Files had to a perfect ending in my opinion, and it’s a strong contender for my favorite episode in the series. The main reason this isn’t my number 1 season is that I think the monster-of-the-week episodes aren’t the greatest. I loved “Roadrunners,” “Redrum”, “Via Negativa”, and “Alone”, but everything else ranged from mediocre to awful for me. Which is a shame, because none of the episodes I loved involved Scully and Doggett working together. I thought they worked well as a duo, but I felt this season didn’t give them any good plots to really showcase that. If this season just had better monster-of-the-week episodes, I’d call it my favorite season in a heartbeat. Number 1: Season 6 - Favorite Episode: Either Tithonus or The Unnatural - Least Favorite Episode: Alpha “If there’s one thing I can say about Season 6 that I can’t say about the other seasons, it’s that it didn’t have a single episode that I really disliked. My least favorite is “Alpha,” which I think is weak, but I didn’t think it came anywhere close to the lows of the other seasons. While it is true that this is where the mythology became a little more disjointed (I guess Chris Carter had imagined they’d stop after season 5 and transition to being a film series), I didn’t think the mythology episodes this season were bad. My biggest complaint is that I wish there were more of them. I thought “The Beginning” did a great job tying the unrelated plots of “The End” and the X-Files movie together and setting up Kersh, Spenders, and Fowley as the antagonists for the first half of the season (They probably should have been the antagonists the whole season admittedly). I thought “Two Fathers/One Son” was an exciting climax for the Syndicate storyline that probably should have been the season finale, but was still very effective. (I have some minor issues with it, but I still enjoyed it more than any of season 5’s mythology). And this season is also where I thought Krychek became an imposing villain. I thought the past two seasons just seemed to be making up random backstories and plotlines for him on the fly, but from here on out he was simply a competent and threatening secondary villain, which I liked a lot more. I think the plotline of “Biogenesis” came out of nowhere and was one of the weaker episodes of the season, but I still found it interesting, and I would have been on board had they devoted more time to it in season 7. But the real highlight of this season for me was the monster-of-the-week episodes. There were so many great ones, and there was a good tonal variety. You had serious episodes like “Drive,” “Tithonus,” and “Milagro.” There were lighter episodes with “The Unnatural” and “Rain King.” There were comedic episodes with “Dreamland” and “Arcadia.” And then there were episodes that had interesting blends of humor and seriousness such as “Monday” and “How the Ghosts Stole Christmas.” It’s hard to really explain why I like this season so much without just saying that I liked all the episodes. And I understand that I’m probably alone in that opinion, as there were some episodes I imagine people dislike a lot. I don’t think I can call this season perfect (if it had season 8’s mythology somehow, I probably could), but I’m hard pressed to say that there was anything that really bothered me personally about Season 6. I got the most enjoyment out of it on average making it hands down my favorite season.” Thank you so much if you read all of this. I hope my newcomer hot takes didn’t offend anyone too badly. Once again, this list is very subject to change since I’ve seen about 80% of these episodes only once, but these were my first impressions. And even though my opinions differed from the ones in this video, I still had a great time watching and hearing what others have to say about one of my new favorite shows.

I watched this video expecting to hate it, expecting tons of hate for season 8, which I enjoyed, and was very surprised. I almost agree with every bit of this ranking 100%. Duchovny was absolutely calling it in in seasons 6 and 7, clearly bored with his role, and the addition of Doggett added new life into the show. While I liked the Mulder/Scully dynamic, the show wasn't about them, and I wish fans could've seen the possibility of other agents continuing the X-Files. I think we'd have a much richer X-Files universe today if they had.

The Dogget and Reyes seasons were so annoying to me. The endless chiaroscuro lighting, Dogget's terrible accent, Reyes' turtlenecks and leather jackets, "someone's in the hospital" episodes where it's just the other people pining away at the bedside. It goes on an on, but it's mostly that annoying noir lighting that they thought was probably super clever but is just so phony looking.

And I didn't dislike those seasons because I was too loyal to Mulder and Scully or something. If a show is good, it's good. Good writing could have made their replacements work perfectly well. The stories just weren't interesting and it felt too much like a "TV show" whereas the early seasons felt like "case files", if that makes any sense.

4 2 1 3 6 8 7 9 the first seasons always let the characters in doubt and although it gets pretty obvious that scully would not believe it was an interesting way to show how skeptics can be as blind as believers by just denying because of reasons agent doggett vs scully is an interesting way to show how logical and faithful Mulder was as opposed to what scully believed. it guess this change didn't hurt. I guess they really didn't know where to go because they touched everything before. if they took more space between myth episodes it would be ok I liked the monster episodes and the reversed view ones too. they could have done more repeating the story from other point of view. for example from skinner pov when smoking man threats their agents

Season 6 was f’ing awesome. There were only 1 or 2 weak episodes. Season 6 probably had the highest percentage of good episodes of any season. And many episodes weren’t just “good”, but very good to great. The stand-alone Monster of the Weak episodes were awesome. Episodes like Field Trip, Monday, Drive, Arcadia and Tithonus were outstanding stand-alone episodes. Then you also had other good stuff like Terms of Endearment, Agua Mala and the Rain King that are solid entries. And who can forget the great climax of the alien conspiracy mythology episodes with the awesome Two Fathers/One Son 2 parter. Season 6 could make a case for a top 3 ranking of all-time.

@@AnonymousAnonposter There’s a lot of nostalgia associated with the first five seasons. Season 6 came in the middle of the shows run, so it’s harder for episodes from the middle or later seasons, to be remembered as classics. Some people may even have stopped watching the X-Files by the time we got to season 6. If season 6 had happened during let’s say the season three or season four era, it would be better remember I think.

I didn't like season 9 when it was fresh, but it's aged pretty well. Definitely the worst of the original run, but looking back it's actually a pretty good continuation and honestly could have sustained the series, transitioning it into a kind of sequel that had mulder and scully pop in occasionally. Ultimately, 10 and 11 were victims of the change in taste from episodic to serialized television. X files really needs to have 20 episode seasons to strike its balance between episodes and serialized conspiracy. Practically all the episodes you hate on are at least entertaining- bad Xfiles is at least good.

I loved the 2 comedy episodes in season 10 & 11. The Lost Art of Forehead Sweat Might be one of the funniest episodes ever and does a lot of silly fan fair that I really appreciated. Also the thought of Aliens hating Earth and the people of it and giving that hilarious almost word for word Trump speech was Fucking Gold! but really The Mandela Effect is such a cool topic to do an episode about.
