As a non-native Japanese speaker, I've been listening to X-Japan for over 20 years since I was a teenager. I've never searched for the meaning of the song, almost never looked for the lyric. But I can sing along to the song. That's how much X-Japan influences me.

Yes, but X-Japan is perhaps the Japanese band that uses English the most in their songs, since Yoshiki has always lived in the USA, and in addition, Toshi has very good English pronunciation, as other Japanese singers don't. They have songs all in English like Crucify my love and Art of Life, and even the other songs they mix english with japanese, which is really cool for fans of other nationalities.

The pink haired guitarist Hide (pronounced hee-day) died of "accidental suicide" few months after the band broke up in 1998, his funeral had the most attendees in Japans history after WW2 (roughly 50 000) some even took their own life, a girl slit her wrist after laying flowers for him. Yeah, the fans were and are pretty hardcore in Japan. He also had a pretty succesful solo career as Hide (also Hide with Spread beaver and Zilch) he even wrote some of the songs for X Japan (Sadistic desire, drain, miscast, celebration, joker, love replica etc) mainly the drummer/pianist Yoshiki composed and wrote their songs, he based a lot of the lyrics on his fathers suicide when he was 10. Yoshiki also had and still goes on as a solo artist Yoshiki, playing X Japan songs composed to classical piano. Their late bassist Taiji (kicked from the band for unkown reasons in 1992) killed himself in 2011, the band broke up in 1997, when they held their "Last Live" because the vocalist Toshi joined a cult which made amends for him to leave the band and they inflicted mental and physical violence on him, the band got together in 2008 and Toshi left the cult, Yoshikis mother said in a documentary (We Are X!) that doctors told her that his song (Yoshiki) wouldnt make it past 30 since he had a very fragile body, yet he is still drumming and playing like crazy while on painkillers.(hence also the neckbrace) Gene Simmons said that if X Japan were to be an english band or would sing in english they would have been the biggest band in the world.

Getting caught up on some of your videos. I’ve been MIA but have a little more time now. And Yes, I’m a huge X Japan fan. They are actually my favorite band of all time. Their very early stuff is probably my favorite. Hide (he-day)is the guitarist with hot pink hair. He sadly passed in 1998. He was amazing and also had an awesome solo career. Yoshiki the drummer/pianist is the leader of Xjapan. He writes the songs and music. He also has a solo career but does mostly classical shows. Since his first instrument was classical piano. I can go on and on. Lol. This was cool to see.

This is one of my favorite bands. I've been a fan of them since the mid 90s before their first break up. There is so much shit this band has gone through. They produced a documentary "We Are X Japan" which should be available in English. I've been to a few of their concerts, which were always great. Unfortuately, for whatever reason the drummer Yoshiki and vocal Toshi are not on good terms now, which is holding up their s-u-p-e-r l-o-n-g delayed next albumn. Toshi appears on Japanese TV covering other Japanese songs, though it seems he is not allowed to sing X Japan songs anymore. Hopefully they'll work through the problems sooner than never. You should check out "Art of Life", a 30-minute epic.

I am not an expert on X Japan, but my understanding is that the drummer's doctor told him that if he did not want to risk permanent neck injury, he would either have to stop drumming or wear the neck brace. You can see which option he chose.

SU-METAL of BABYMETAL was born 10 days before this December 1997 breakup concert. The lore has it that she took over his legendary neck brace to save the declining METAL world.

Another Japan recommendation is anthem. not quite famous outside Japan, but they are solid musicians. oh and their songs recently being released in english language, but I think they sounded the best on Japanse. I hope you get chance to check them sometimes!

Yeah, Yoshiki (drummer) apparently wrecked his neck headbanging too hard lol... The doctors told him he shouldn't drum anymore, so he took up the neckbrace as a compromise >_
