I was about 10 and was just getting into comics when this came out. Truly works of art. I got all versions of the issue with all covers. I think it even came with a holographic card of magneto.

In my opinion Chris Claremonts last classic story on the X-Men even though he would return years later he never achieved this level of story telling again. Love your commentary on the story & art sir.

I like the inside poster more! It's beautiful, the placement of the strong/bigger characters,to the smaller. He would redo this cover with the New 52 Justice League putting Darkseid in Magneto's spot. I was certain you were going to say something about Colossus and Jubilee flexing together!🤣

Yeah, that's a good joke on that double-page poster! The Cable jokes were good, though.

@@comicsbazaar4508did you ever get to see the Justice League cover Lee did in this style? He also did a version of Aquaman sitting on his throne w/trident. Just like his original drawing of the Sub-Mariner in the FF Heroes Reborn, exactly the same pose. Namor looks better to me

This is by far my favorite review of this issue. Very well done and explained. I know this was your very 1st video you uploaded a year ago and I suppose this is an anniversary upload but you went into greater detail which was more entertaining. 384 videos so far in about 365 days, keep up the good work!

I was 12 when this came out and was ALL IN on comics. Being a comics fan at this time was as exciting as it could get. This is absolutely Jim and Scott at their very best. While I slightly prefer his older Uncanny work because it was so exciting to see this "new guy" doing such incredible art, these first few issues were definitely top level pencil/inks (great coloring too!). Its just so cool to revisit from time to time.

This issue is both the beginning and the end. It was the start of a whole new era of comics, leaving the high quality storytelling of the 70s and 80s behind in exchange for more flashy art, more interesting connected sagas, and more messy corporate greed and editorial intervention. This issue is the best parts of the 90s and the worst parts of the 90s. It was the best selling comic of all time, and it was the first comic with variant covers to actually successfully push variant covers, which ended up being one of the worst things possible for the comics industry. It had amazing art, something that would honestly become pretty inconsistent in the 90s and beyond. This issue is awesome. It's great, it's claremont's last time creating a truly industry defining comic, even if it's not his very best work. But seeing what followed in the 90s, what the success of incredible storylines like The Killing Joke and business practices like variant covers did, how the industry became all style over substance for a decade... was it worth it? The comics industry has never been "consistent," exactly, it's always fluctuating between doing really well and doing terribly, but before this, it was at least a mainstream niche. The 90s turned comics into an inaccessible collector's hobby with a high time and money investment required to really experience it as it was meant to be experienced. We've been having something of a renaissance since around 2014 with creators like Ewing and Hickman starting to do some of their best work, along with titles like X-Men, Thor, Loki and Hulk getting their definitive runs or redefinitions that make them something completely fresh and new, and I'm very glad for that. But with very few exceptions, the 90s-2010s were the dark ages, and even if the 2020s are proving to be a new and incredible era, it would've been nice to see what the last few decades, not shaped by the events of the late 80s and early 90s might've been like

There was a run-up to X-Men #1, which included Spider-Man #1 with its variant covers, and X-Force #1 with the bagged cards. But yes, X-Men #1 was the most successful of them, and that did mean that there would be a lot more gimmicks until the bubble burst.

The first comic I actually read. Beautiful art but a horrible initial comic reading experience at that age (maybe around 8 at the time ). It took me nearly an hour to read as I didn't know how to read a comic. The double page spread where everyone is essentially introduced for example, confused the hell out of me as a kid because I didn't understand they were talking to everyone via comm link and that they were viewing a large screen monitor. A lot of people sh*t on Claremont for all of the word vomit but without it you wouldn't know what the hell was going on in the book. I had the Cykes, Iceman, and Wolvie cover initially that came with an Archangel figure (the first ToyBiz line) my mother bought for me at KayBee toys. I was hooked. I later copped all individual copies and the deluxe copy at a comic shop in the early 2000s. There's a re-colored version they did for an anniversary edition that came out years ago that I wish I could've picked up but now that thing's a tad bit expensive.

The Wolvie and Cyclops cover was my first one. I bought it at a local newsagents. It was my first Marvel superhero comic. This comic snagged a lot of new readers from everywhere.

Yes, Danny, my first video was of X-Men #1. But I reviewed the 20th anniversary recoloured edition. This time, I reviewed the original, and I tried to say more about the content and details of the comic. It’s almost gotten as many views already as my first review, and it’s brought new subs to the channel. I’ll be re-doing #2 later this week.

I was one of the suckers that bought all versions. I remember being a bit disappointed in the story. It was like a big budget movie with little substance. All flash. The concept of bringing the original and updated teams of Xmen together was great though. However, I still believe Jim Lee's best work at Marvel, was on Punisher.

Not Sold …. Printed! That doesn’t mean that 8 million were sold…… I’d hazard a guess a massive amount of those ended up in landfills .

More than 8 millions copies were sold to retailers in the direct market. Direct sales are non-returnable. However, you're right that not every copy bought by direct sales retailers sold to paying customers. It's impossible to know what percentage of the 8.20 million copies were actually bought by comics readers. I can account for 6 of them anyway! Here's an interesting article on the sales figures for X-Men #1: comichron.com/blog/2010/11/16/x-men-1-one-piece-and-world-records/
