This proves that Jean and Madelyn were switched after phoenix saga, that the real Jean was the host for the phoenix force, and sinister switched them perhaps in season 5 after their wedding Edit: phoenix fragment usually activates upon the host’s death to resurrect the host.

yeah most people believe its the end of season 4 in beyond good and evil where when jean is pushed in the portal that's it in which you see madalyne in everything after that, you do have some elements of season 5 that makes it somewhat credible to the theory when I watched the whole series like telling scott to give up on chasing sinister in the first arc before the animation change as well as when the animation change had her without a pony tail which 97 they still have a subtle point that pony tail is jean (though the show can be relaxed with the two having the opposite hair which you could headcanon they have deeper meanings like jean's hair down in episode 7 is her mourning Madaline's death). In the end of the day the show doesn't bluntly say when as they want to leave it open and i think it's better that way as it sets off jean's character who in 97 i think is kind of underrated character-wise then just "oh she didn't faint"

This. Jean and the Phoenix Saga story are so intertwined but it also only works because it ultimately ends with Jean's 'temporary' death - her being the Phoenix makes her so OP that it trivializes any challenge or problem that her character needs in order to develop. It's why I liked that one Jean Grey solo comic run - where she has memories of being the DP, and travels to meet other cosmic-level heroes in a journey to understand herself and her role as the Phoenix Force host - it was a slightly meta take on the dilemma of Jean Grey as a character vs plot device. Also, I'm tired of the constant flamebird we get in all Jean-related media. Give me Marvel Girl telekinetic pink bolts again!

I'm kind of wondering if the Phoenix made gene hole again. Does that mean Madeline prior is also back to being part of her? I know Madeline was killed in the whole genoche massacre but Madeline is still a part of gene. So I'm wondering if this fused them back together again. Because gene called Nathan her son and he accepted it. That is a great moment. Although I have no idea how the Phoenix managed to survive. Considering the last time we saw the Phoenix it departed. "I am Phoenix" is a fairly iconic line, used by Jean in the Phoenix's introduction to comics, and used again in the 90's animated series. This is the equivalent of calling out Professor X for saying "To me, my X-Men" or calling out Gambit for saying "The name's Gambit, remember it."
