I have been loving the Disney + series X-Men '97. It has caused me to go back and re-read or read for the first time a lot of the Chris Claremont stories from the late 70s and early 80s. They are well written with amazing character development. With that being said, I need to go back and buy a bunch of these, because I purged most of my collection in 2023 to move towards bigger grails for my personal collection.
Here are the comic books that I was able to pick up in the past few weeks. Some I bought at STL Comics in St. Louis, Great River Collectibles, an antique shop in Iowa, a pawn shop and a local collecting buddy. I try to find comic book everywhere.
Check out Colossus Collector and his group of X-Men collectors : / @colossuscollector
In a world of comic book investing, comic book speculation, FOMO after any new announcement and just spending money on the top 10 list garbage, I am focused on buying key comic books to build an incredible comic book collection 5 books at a time. If you just had these 5 books in your collection you would have a pretty cool eye catching collection in my opinion. These books can be expensive, but if you come up with a plan on how to save up for these you can achieve them. They can also be affordable as well. Cool keys do not have to be expensive keys. I really hope you enjoy this video an make sure to share the link with your friends as this is a very limited time offer.
Foundational Comic Books is a phrase I came up with to describe Universally Recognizable Key Issues. These are comics books that will increase the overall appeal and value of your collection on a broad basis. Obviously you want to collect what you like, but there are a lot of influential people that will tell you to buy 'Hot Books of the week'. Those comic books are fine, but they might not be recognizable to everyone or increase the value of your collection long term. Be weary when it comes to anyone telling you what you should buy.

Mowing lawns was how I got money for comic books as a kid too. It was right in that late 70's-early 80's when the X-Men were everything. When Byrne left the title for the FF, interest in X-Men started to go down a little and Miller/Daredevil kind of took over as the hottest book for a while.

I love the Claremont/Byrne run of X-men! It has sentimental value to me because it was what sparked my comic collecting. I had never read X-men and my dad bought me 175 new from the newstand. I loved it, and read it over and over. From there I read from about 150 up to 175 (my friend had them) and was totally hooked.

For me, it was the Nightcrawler story in Amazing Spider-Man 161 and 162. I must have read someone else's copy since I don't own those. The first issue of Uncanny X-Men that I had in my collection was 144, and I went up to 318 before I stopped collecting. 29 years later, I picked the hobby back up, completed all of the Uncanny X-Men issues after 318 (including the other 4 volumes), and now I'm working my way back toward 1. I wish I had bought these 30-something years ago. lol There's a local con this weekend where I'm hoping to find issues 109, 120, 121, and 122 in order to get me all the way back to the beginning of the Claremont/Byrne collaboration.

Funny or not that you mentioned your birth year when showing Xmen #160 because I remember exactly buying that book at 7-11 the day it came out. Two years ago I received a 9.8 prescreen back from you know who and that book got the 9.8, along with twelve others. But the 160 brought back so many memories from just that day when I bought it! So here's the story. I was fourteen and after school that day I walked home from school, Arvada Jr. High in a suburb of Denver, and headed straight to 7-11 to buy my comics. I bought that Xmen, Asm #?, FF #?, Justice League #?, Daredevil #?. As I was coming out of the store the rain started coming down hard and I knew I had to run home asap. I ran across four lanes of busy traffic while I held my comics in a brown paper bag close to my chest kinda underneath my jacket the best I could and had to jump over a covert about 4' wide with fast running water flowing through it and jump over a 6' fence into the back yard of my friend's house, who lived just a block from me. That book survived all that and never was damaged and I sent it in and got a 9.8. It looks great like a 9.8 should and it's a newsstand even though cgc wasn't labeling it at that time. 😅

I don't have the same visceral reaction to JRJR art, but I can understand the criticisms. I'm not the biggest X-Men collector, but that sensation of accomplishment from acquiring silver age issues is real when you're younger. Got #9 for ~$20 back in 2009. I'm keeping my eyes open for a nice raw X-Men 266. Feels like the right time.

1978-1986 were my peak years of collecting X-Men as a kid. I even had a mail-order subscription between issues #158-169. Between issues #189-191 is when I started to sour on JRjr as an artist. I dipped back into reading X-Men in 1993 in the lead-in to Jean and Scott's wedding and Romita Jr was back on Uncanny and *shudders*. I know a lot of fans and professionals like that period of Romita Jr, but I just don't see the appeal.
