Morph can approximate the powers of people with physical mutations only. He is unable to gain the powers of any other mutant he turns into, nor are his naturally shifted weapons as strong as synthetic material (i.e. if he turns into Wolverine his claws are made out of human matter and as such not as strong as Wolverines adamantium claws).

The point of making something new is irrelevant, if something is good is good, the series stand on its own either way, you don't really need to remember much of the old series because it explains it... People really like to act as if there are not new things out there when they just don't bother to look for more.
