Jim Lee carried this crossover on his back. His parts are the crown jewel of this story line and some of his most dynamic work of his run on X-Men.

Yes Jim Lee's artwork was great. I wish he had did the entire story.

Nobody draws Wolverine like Jim Lee does. He makes Logan look like such short little feral badass.

Uncanny X-Men #270 wasn't the first comic book I owned; I had been reading Spider-Mans of various Adjectives (but, and in hindsight somewhat unfortunately, mostly Web Of and Spectacular) the occasional Avengers family book, Daredevil and as covertly as I could muster since my mother wasn't much a fan of the overt violence that often adorned even the covers of the main boom and my much-preferred War Journal (again in hindsight, obviously because WJ featured the art of industry legend Jim Lee) Punisher and Punisher War Journal. I think I was 9 or 10 at the time and making the jump into the X-Men's world honestly felt like I was finally making the jump from books for kids to the more serious and adult-themed books aimed towards if not an "older" crowd, certainly a more mature crowd. One thing I remember extremely specifically was a feeling that I was being thrown immediately into the deep end. References abounded to events from (what felt like) 5-10 years of stories; Fall of the Mutants, the Reavers, Australia, the Siege Perilous, Inferno and more.. this had what I have to assume was the editorial staff's desired effect, essentially that I felt left out by having no frame of reference. This also doubles down on the impact of "more mature" as I couldn't shake a feeling akin to being a child separated from their Guardian in the middle ofna natural disaster. Okay, why? Well... Claremont, despite his flaws which have been discussed elsewhere and more professionally, has by this point become a master of many important comic book craft functions and devices of writing in general. The sense of calm which is disrupted by the arrival of the Press Gang, certainly beat that have happened over and over in the X-Men's world (I wonder if it's ever been actually counted, the number of times the Mansion has been destroyed) serve to pull the reader directly into the heart of the conflict as WELL as allowing one to immediately choose side. And despite all the things I mentioned alluding to how one could feel very lost, Claremont opens the door and prompts us to throw our hearts and minds behind the X-Men's cause. I bought a collection of X-Tinction agenda a few years back and I was stunned how much my memories of reading this were colored a wonderful warm rose hue. 3 years later, very little stands up in practice to my recollections and its almost a miracle how this issue would start my life-long love of X-Men's plight and story. What does hold up is Jim Lee's dazzling pencils. I returned to this issue for years and years when trying to craft interesting weapons & vehicle sketches. The sequence of the Magistrates jumping in is awe-inspiring in that way. Thanks for doing these! I really appreciate revisiting these x-stories! Cheers!

13:58 is what sold me into comic collecting. The writing and art is inseparable. Jim is a boss king.

I'm glad you like it! Both the comic and the review. Overall, I did still enjoy the comic, even if I'm a little hard on it in my review.

I read this not even two days ago, been reading every X-book ever made, lmo still good but not great. Also I remember Havok showing up for a few panels in Genosha in some Uncanny story before X-tinction Agenda.

That's entirely possible. You're probably right. Claremont was a big fan of revealing twists to the reader before the characters, but none of the X-Men were aware yet that he was in Genosha before this story.

Seriously, Jim Lee just kills it here. It's so interesting because even a year or two earlier (a lifetime when your age just barely scrapes a number into the two-digits) I wasn't even necessarily aware on a conceptual level that different comics were written and penciled by different artists. So I do find it kind of cool knowing in hindsight that two of my favorites beginning from when I could even really differentiate were books drawn by the creator who remains one of my heroes of the comic book world and probably one of the biggest overall influences on my becoming a comics fan. I'm talking of course about Jim Lee.

Honestly, I don't remember it specifically by now, but I recall usually liking Jim Lee's X-Men work, so I was probably at the least fine with it.

@malachibaskette908 That is correct. During "Acts of Vengeance," the story that brought us the new Psylocke, they literally said that her features had just been altered. Which was how Wolverine knew it was her, because her smell hadn't changed. Much later (about 3 years after this story) under different creative teams they "revealed" (or retconned) that she had been body swapped with Kwannon.

Cyclops will always be Jean's one true love because they've both always been the absolute lamest characters in all of the various X-titles. Well...maybe not out of ALL of them. Pretty lame, though. Except when Jean has that yellow and green Phoenix costume on. I LOVE that costume for some reason.
