I lived near here since the nearby blocks were built in 1985. The mall was so crowded back then, as it is practically the only mall in the entire area. There also used to be a Lim Tua Tow market in the 1980s, and many more shophouses theming with activity around the "double junction" (Upper Serangoon Road junction with Yio Chu Kang Road and then Boundary Road/Upper PL Road just a short distance away). It was the commercial hub of this area. What Mary said about the dwindling crowds now is partly true....but its not really only because people lazy to climb the bridge lah haha. Last time before the viaduct was built, it was indeed easier to cross the USR. Now, the viaduct has cut the area into two. The market has long disappeared since the 1990s. Most of the shophouses were demolished. Even a "Kovan Mall" built nearby in the 1990s did not last long and has since been rebuilt. Just a few months ago, the whole row of eateries in the shophouses along Teck Chye Terrace has also suddenly disappeared. The area has lost much of the buzz by now. The mall was where I bought my first football jersey (Italy jersey in 1998, costing $50, a mini fortune for me back then). I think it was called Jack Sports. It was where a second-hand bookshop used to be (called Evergreen I think), and where I always hang out for hours. This was where the school uniform shop was located. But strangely, I don't go to the famous PC shop upstairs even though I was a PC and gaming nerd. I preferred SL Square haha. Today, I still frequent the Red Panther Barber shop (you showed it for a few seconds in the video). The same uncle cut my hair for over 20 years liao, and I usually get "special rates". I rarely even need to give any instructions unless I wanted something different. This is something you can only get from neighbourhood shops like these, and never from QB House, EC House or Kcuts. ;) There was once recently when I ran out of cash again and the uncle proudly pointed to the Paynow QR Code. I burst out laughing saying "Wah uncle! You guys quite trendy still, eh?!" 😂 But each time I go there...I wondered how long more I can do so....may it last as long as it can....

hahaha yes i bought my jersey from jack sports too! mine was the Nakata Japan jersey with flames at the side. used to buy "friendly" VCD, games and even Windows 95 from ah Lim! there were a few other shops selling "friendly" CDs! back then still can see 1 attap house at the side of the road before turning into the mall's carpark!

I grew up in the Braddell Heights landed estate nearby at my grandmother’s house. Used to frequent this old mall in the 80s with my uncle. There was an Oriental Emporium department store in the mall. Oh the row of shophouses at Teck Chye was acquired by a developer. It will be built into a mixed use development (my child’s schoolmate’s father was looking out for the new project to buy ). The project is called Mber. Since it’s mixed use, the ground floor will be retail so there will be restaurants again yay for residents nearby. Later my parents moved to Hougang side (walking distance to now Hougang MRT) and I lived there for >20 years then I got married, after marriage had an unfortunate terrible 5 year stint in super ulu far away and take forever to get to town Hillview ulu shitty area. I quickly moved back to this area in 2013. (Hougang side). And then finally after stewing there for 8 years, I managed to buy my forever home here, I consider this as where I grew up a few years ago when we bought a nice cluster house. This is home.

It’s a pity you didn’t visit Computex next to Wawa and talk to the legendary owner Ah Lim. It was a running joke for many years that the whole Upper Serangoon Shopping Centre was kept alive from the revenue that he alone generates. Ah Lim is a legend among 80s and 90s kids in the gaming community and at one point, was single-handedly responsible for renting out almost the entire floor for his business.

My goodness, this mall is still around! I remember going to the place in the early mid-90s and there were quite a few computer shops right after the mid-bridge. It is also where I bought the PC adventure game Phantasmagoria where the characters were real life action actors. It was the first of its gory kind.

I just looked up the game, that’s some crazy concept of having real actors in a game 🤣. Goodness! Yes the mall is still alive, but not so kicking. It probably still stands still as it was in 80s or 90s

The lady boss of Wawa also does fengshui too. 2 of my kids name were calculated by her. The last time that I visited her was in March 2022, she shared that she only open her salon 3-4 times a week and close before 3pm.

In the 80s during my Sec days, i always come here after school to buy cassette, computer games and eat banana split in the restaurant(forget name). It was also a place where those of us from boys school meet the girls from nearby girls school. It was buzzing then.

I remembered going there to buy computer games from Ah Lim.. Also play arcade game like Street Fighter in 1 of the Arcade Shop... The Arcade Game Shop has a staircase leading to a 2nd level that adult can play the Pool Billiard. Which later both were closed down and replaced by a Taiwan Supermarket Store.. Which then was also closed down, later was replaced by a Seafood Restaurant ... Currently it was replaced by wedding venue for Malay Wedding and the 2nd Upper floor is a Furniture Store.. I hope I am correct with all the historical timeline if my memory do serve me right.. A very nostalgic old Shopping Centre that serve part of my childhood memory...

Ah the 80s, and going to USSC to buy pirated video games for our Apple IIe computers on big 5.25 inch floppy disks and eating 50 cent french fries drenched in chilli sauce from the awesome "Big A" fried chicken restaurant downstairs. Then walking across the road to buy guppies from the wooden aquarium shop next to Kok Wah cinema...

I used to live at Hougang area. I remember the shopping centre and Lim Tua Tow hawker centre. Not sure vegetarian restaurant along Upper Serangoon Road opp the shopping centre still around.

In the 90s, the shop just in front of the escalator heading up to the 4th floor near where Auntie Mary's shop is, rented out console games by the hour, and kids from the nearby schools gather and play games there. This was before arcades got unbanned, iirc it was about $3 per hour to play Sega Megadrive. Next to that shop was a record shop which sold cassette tapes and CDs too. At the basement next to where the restaurant is now, there was another game shop which sold this game console called PC Engine games. The console was not so popular, so a shop which supported the console with games was quite rare. Kids from the schools nearby would gather to see them play games at this store for quite some time. Of course, there is also "Ah Lim's Place" next to Wawa, like one of the commenters here pointed out. Always crowded after school and his machines were doing copying games in overdrive.

Gosh. I just happened to chance upon this video. I actually live in the HDB estate near the shopping mall and usually only access the mall to cross over to the other side of Upper Serangoon Road to Space@Kovan and Serangoon Stadium. I should really pay more attention to the shops inside as well.

Upper Serangoon Shopping Centre落成于1980年,当时挺热闹的. KZbin 推荐你的视频,誏我回想起这里是我40年前上私人英文補习课的地方,当年的同学们的样子一下子就涌现在眼前,可惜都失去联系了😢😂.

@@HongisBored 1960-1978年代,这一带乡村气氛挺浓的。站在购物中心前面对yio chu Kang road, T-junction右边是一间三层楼木屋的的polyclinic. 那里属低洼地，从购物中心到后面的地段之前全是亚答屋農村.

@@HongisBored cos now nearby got like 3 condos and it can potentially be a long stretch for walking and eating, like chinatown-esque area but heartland - from all the way at upper serangoon + stars of kovan + kovan ... can be quite fun

的确不明白为何这个商场如此凄清，而且是已经很久就如此了，几乎没有鼎盛过。隔两三个巴士站就是NEX，根本是天堂和地狱。为何不力争像麦当劳或口福来驻扎。记得角落曾经看到职总超市，但可能不是大型或是孤身作战，无法把它拉上来。

Upp Serangoon Shopping Centre has 1 big landlord that control the rent and has a biggest say in almost everything. So NTUC or any bigger Tenant will not move there cos 1) 1 single Landlord, 2) mighty Tenant will not consider rental there cos its deplorable condition.
