I am not an X-Plane guy. I tried it a few versions ago and just couldn't get in to it. I am excited to see X-Plane 12 come out though as it is just more competition, and competition makes vendors up their game, and that benefits us, the sim pilots.

Same here. I have tried it a few times in the past but gravitated back to Microsoft as it was back then (no P3D). But I have not tried it for at least 6 years so I am going to see what version 12 is like. P3D did not really evolve as well as I would have liked in terms of pristine visuals and although I am happy to give it a concession because it is more for training than sight seeing, I still think they could easily have done a lot better. And a poor internet connection means MSFS is out - I consider myself lucky if a 10 GB download is done within 24 hours with several interrupts along the way. I'd have to run the X-Plane 12 DVD version if it were X-Plane assuming the DVd is available to users outside of the US. The only other realistic alternative for me now is P3D, but version 6 requires a permanent internet connection which isn't the case for me (and at this stage I am not enthusiastic enough to pay $500 AUD for the P3D version 6 professional licence!). I tried version 4 P3D and the aliasing on the runways is horrible. They resolved that with version 5 but in version 5 the aliasing of the taxiway signs at night make night approaches unbelievably distracting - like flying into a sparkler show.

It's a pity there isn't a button for "I really, really like this"! I think there's a lot more to X-Plane 12 than meets the eye, and we're still right at the start of development - the best is yet to come. I was trying out the weather today - took a C172 floatplane up to Stuart Island Airstrip (YRR), current time and date, sunrise, weather = convective deteriorating, and watched what happened. Sat on the end of the runway. It was quite mesmerising! Rain squalls swept by, the wind got really gusty so the aircraft was rocking around, the sun gradually came up, thunder , lightning, trees thrashing around.... and the lighting through the clouds looked completely convincing - I've seen it look that! The only things I was missing were a blanket and a flask of coffee! We just had a thunderstorm here today IRL, and I swear it sounded *exactly* the same. And I totally concur with Gondor Avalon below - what a fabulous hobby we all have, no matter what sim you prefer. We all love flying and are completely spoilt by the choices we have. Total kudos and respect to the legions of people working tirelessly behind the scenes that make it all possible.

Tried the Demo and had to buy it. It’s early access and already so gooood! Dare I say it feels better than MSFS?! The planes just feel better in the air. The motion feels more fluid and you can feel the weight of the aircraft better too. Kind of hard to describe, but it’s just a really nice experience. And the night lighting is mmmmwaaaa! So tasty! The wet reflections are stunning to behold as is the rain on the windshield. So much to enjoy and I’ve only had about an hour flight time. I’m removing a bunch of msfs files to my online storage to make room for my new go-to Flight Sim to grow! Wow, what a ride!

@@AlexFHDVideos2 The Zibo wipes rain. It's not an XP issue it's a developer issue. FSX never had rain effects. P3D got rain effect about 6 years into its life by a third party developer called TFDI. At first it only worked on the 717 and today only works on a small amount of planes and it most cases also does not wipe.

I have been an instructor pilot of light and ultralight aircraft for over 35 years, and I honestly do not think the graphics of the FS 2020 scenarios are adequate for the real training of light and ultralight aircraft pilots. Microsoft has designed it (rightly) for those who want to play and not for the training of pilots. for this reason it is much better to take the realism of the X-Plane flight model and build on it autonomously some dedicated scenarios. Which is what has been successfully done with the Italian project of the "VFR ESTREMO"

FS2020 has realism settings. I think u didn't notice. U can turn all assists off and the airframe / flight model is much superior to XP11.

@@radialb1894 of course I tried to disable all the assists and the cell and in any case the flight model was much worse. The reason is that in FS2020 the flight model is written by a programmer for each individual airplane, while on the x-plane it is calculated automatically by an algorithm based on the dynamics of the fluids on every single surface of each plane. This is the reason why self-built prototypes can reasonably be tested on x-plane and not on FS2020. in summary FS2020 is a magnificent game but it is not (nor did Microsoft ever want it to be) a simulator suitable for training real pilots.

Word of warning to the demo users: the sim let's you try and load other ICAOs, but once you do you have no way to go back to the defaults without a reinstall unless you know the airport. So if you want to fly the default airport in the demo, use ICAO: KPDX

This sim looks great! And of course, it's early access so it will have some imperfections such as overly darkened cockpit lighting and cloud over exposure, but those caveats will be ironed out very soon. I honestly can't wait to buy it!!

Its got a certain old-school charm to it. I dont care that it cant look as real as MSFS Im still a fan of the XP series. Both MSFS and XP will always remain on my system. They can both learn from each other. For example MSFS would do well to copy XPs excellent replay mechanism. XP should copy MSFS Community Folder modding system. Just ONE folder to deal with for adding mods - perhaps one of MSFS best features. One big one XP has up its sleeve - you can enjoy it without need to stream data down the pipe. But most of all we should not bash each other , we are all wannabe virtual pilots. A niche genre in gaming. Lets all get along and enjoy - no matter the platform we use 😀

You can't compare the two. They use different systems, to achieve similar goals. MS , uses ON the FlY streaming data, WHICH REQUIRES A fast internet connection, to achieve their PHOTO REAL. scenery . And , the system requirements are obnoxious. AND, the system is typical Microsoft tiered. IF you want the real the "STUFF," the eye candy, YOU pay for it. Bronze, Silver and basically GOLD. And, is basically a stripped down SIM, unless you level up. MS is more realistic, but , the cost of the SIM ,and painful, hardware requirements, makes it impractical for the general user. XP Plane 12, comes with a lot more features, and is still only 60.00. I'll go with that all day.

I tried the demo today. After having almost all versions of X-plane I would think this would have started to compare to MSFS 2020 but for some reason Laminar still can't get clouds to look right at all. Don't agree. I have both sims, use both and love both. MS over dramatizes the sky & clouds. Skies sometimes just looks boring in real life. MS always makes them look like we're on the brink of Armageddon. Not every sunset looks like you're in Hawaii. Sometimes sunsets are duds. Some people just really like eye candy and bling.

The jury is out on this updated version of the X-Plane product. It's impossible to make a valid judgement based on someone else's video. However, I was impressed by the final section of the video; the bush landing section. In terms of the visuals in this section, this has greater realism than the Microsoft product.

@Lungho It's advertised as a beta, and there's a demo. You also get xplane 11 with xplane 12 during the beta. Tbh they're being pretty honest, and didn't 11 also go through a beta? They get their sims into a good shape pretty quickly.

​@Lungho Fair. What I said was pointed towards people who intentionally or not paint it as the battlefront 2 of flight-sims. The features they told you about are there, and they said it was a beta. Instead of advertising it as something it wasn't and then releasing a beta as a "finished" product. Of course you can criticize it, and dislike it A lot of discussions online like this one devolve into calling it a scam, which makes no sense to me

It's a fabulous upgrade and so smooth! Looking forward to experiencing all the new environmental effects. My only niggle is I wish they had improved the Multiplayer, but perhaps that is coming down the pipe.

Credit where its due. I think graphically its quite a big improvement in comparison to XP11 but because we've all seen MSFS I think our expectations were significantly higher. I also think while Laminar Research did recognize the need to improve the graphics, I don't feel they cared about it enough to make it competitive with MSFS which to me comes off as arrogant. I get that their priority is simulation, but they are losing even the casual flight sim user because the graphics just don't compare and I believe its important to keep that user base if you want your simulator to uphold it's competitive edge.

If you go back into their past videos, there is significant content on improving the environment and scenery and I think Laminar set the wrong tone in their marketing. The community is somewhat divided though

Some fools think graphics are more important and that mfs 2020 is better, but they are wrong, Flight model is more important and this is why xplane 12 is the best simulator on the market.

It's a pretty big step forwards. And while the graphics may seem lacking, they're also pretty good. The thing is, as far as I can understand LR did not go for flashy graphics like Microsoft. They went for realism. This means they sacrificed some things along the way. And while FS2020 is meant to be a standalone experience with limited addon support, X-Plane is meant to be an addon platform. The default content is more like a placeholder than anything else. It's fundamentally a different direction than FS2020. But there's one thing I'll say: Can't wait to see what Lockheed Martin come up with. They may be considering Unreal Engine 5, which would blow FS2020 out of the water in terms of graphics.

@@Paolo-qe7lc I think all flight simulators on the market are far from the maximum realism level that can be achieved on present hardware. X-Plane is currently lacking in the scenery and graphics department, but I think things will improve by the time it's out of beta. P3Dv5 is relatively old by this point, so we'll have to see what v6 brings to the table. And even FS2020 is seriously lacking. In terms of flight physics and system simulation support it's pretty bad. But it's also lacking in the graphics department. Just look at what UE5 is capable of. If we could have UE5 graphics, with FS2020 scenery, and with X-Plane 12 physics, then we would be pretty close. Fingers crossed this is what Lockheed are currently working on.
