It's a pity there isn't a button for "I really, really like this"! I think there's a lot more to X-Plane 12 than meets the eye, and we're still right at the start of development - the best is yet to come. I was trying out the weather today - took a C172 floatplane up to Stuart Island Airstrip (YRR), current time and date, sunrise, weather = convective deteriorating, and watched what happened. Sat on the end of the runway. It was quite mesmerising! Rain squalls swept by, the wind got really gusty so the aircraft was rocking around, the sun gradually came up, thunder , lightning, trees thrashing around.... and the lighting through the clouds looked completely convincing - I've seen it look that! The only things I was missing were a blanket and a flask of coffee! We just had a thunderstorm here today IRL, and I swear it sounded *exactly* the same. And I totally concur with Gondor Avalon below - what a fabulous hobby we all have, no matter what sim you prefer. We all love flying and are completely spoilt by the choices we have. Total kudos and respect to the legions of people working tirelessly behind the scenes that make it all possible.

I am not an X-Plane guy. I tried it a few versions ago and just couldn't get in to it. I am excited to see X-Plane 12 come out though as it is just more competition, and competition makes vendors up their game, and that benefits us, the sim pilots.

Same here. I have tried it a few times in the past but gravitated back to Microsoft as it was back then (no P3D). But I have not tried it for at least 6 years so I am going to see what version 12 is like. P3D did not really evolve as well as I would have liked in terms of pristine visuals and although I am happy to give it a concession because it is more for training than sight seeing, I still think they could easily have done a lot better. And a poor internet connection means MSFS is out - I consider myself lucky if a 10 GB download is done within 24 hours with several interrupts along the way. I'd have to run the X-Plane 12 DVD version if it were X-Plane assuming the DVd is available to users outside of the US. The only other realistic alternative for me now is P3D, but version 6 requires a permanent internet connection which isn't the case for me (and at this stage I am not enthusiastic enough to pay $500 AUD for the P3D version 6 professional licence!). I tried version 4 P3D and the aliasing on the runways is horrible. They resolved that with version 5 but in version 5 the aliasing of the taxiway signs at night make night approaches unbelievably distracting - like flying into a sparkler show.

Tried the Demo and had to buy it. It’s early access and already so gooood! Dare I say it feels better than MSFS?! The planes just feel better in the air. The motion feels more fluid and you can feel the weight of the aircraft better too. Kind of hard to describe, but it’s just a really nice experience. And the night lighting is mmmmwaaaa! So tasty! The wet reflections are stunning to behold as is the rain on the windshield. So much to enjoy and I’ve only had about an hour flight time. I’m removing a bunch of msfs files to my online storage to make room for my new go-to Flight Sim to grow! Wow, what a ride!

This sim looks great! And of course, it's early access so it will have some imperfections such as overly darkened cockpit lighting and cloud over exposure, but those caveats will be ironed out very soon. I honestly can't wait to buy it!!

@@AlexFHDVideos2 The Zibo wipes rain. It's not an XP issue it's a developer issue. FSX never had rain effects. P3D got rain effect about 6 years into its life by a third party developer called TFDI. At first it only worked on the 717 and today only works on a small amount of planes and it most cases also does not wipe.

I have been an instructor pilot of light and ultralight aircraft for over 35 years, and I honestly do not think the graphics of the FS 2020 scenarios are adequate for the real training of light and ultralight aircraft pilots. Microsoft has designed it (rightly) for those who want to play and not for the training of pilots. for this reason it is much better to take the realism of the X-Plane flight model and build on it autonomously some dedicated scenarios. Which is what has been successfully done with the Italian project of the "VFR ESTREMO"

FS2020 has realism settings. I think u didn't notice. U can turn all assists off and the airframe / flight model is much superior to XP11.

@@radialb1894 of course I tried to disable all the assists and the cell and in any case the flight model was much worse. The reason is that in FS2020 the flight model is written by a programmer for each individual airplane, while on the x-plane it is calculated automatically by an algorithm based on the dynamics of the fluids on every single surface of each plane. This is the reason why self-built prototypes can reasonably be tested on x-plane and not on FS2020. in summary FS2020 is a magnificent game but it is not (nor did Microsoft ever want it to be) a simulator suitable for training real pilots.

Its got a certain old-school charm to it. I dont care that it cant look as real as MSFS Im still a fan of the XP series. Both MSFS and XP will always remain on my system. They can both learn from each other. For example MSFS would do well to copy XPs excellent replay mechanism. XP should copy MSFS Community Folder modding system. Just ONE folder to deal with for adding mods - perhaps one of MSFS best features. One big one XP has up its sleeve - you can enjoy it without need to stream data down the pipe. But most of all we should not bash each other , we are all wannabe virtual pilots. A niche genre in gaming. Lets all get along and enjoy - no matter the platform we use 😀

Word of warning to the demo users: the sim let's you try and load other ICAOs, but once you do you have no way to go back to the defaults without a reinstall unless you know the airport. So if you want to fly the default airport in the demo, use ICAO: KPDX

Thanks Geoff. I love using this method because it really looks like a camera is being used. I use software called FaceTrackNoIR. It lets you use a web cam to follow you head movements. You can also use your cell phones camera.

Runs on my iMac M1. Not great, but doable. Cockpits are hard to read though, even on your settings

On the surface MSFS looks so much better but I've got no idea on the flight model difference. Those of you with experience of both, what do you think?

You can't compare the two. They use different systems, to achieve similar goals. MS , uses ON the FlY streaming data, WHICH REQUIRES A fast internet connection, to achieve their PHOTO REAL. scenery . And , the system requirements are obnoxious. AND, the system is typical Microsoft tiered. IF you want the real the "STUFF," the eye candy, YOU pay for it. Bronze, Silver and basically GOLD. And, is basically a stripped down SIM, unless you level up. MS is more realistic, but , the cost of the SIM ,and painful, hardware requirements, makes it impractical for the general user. XP Plane 12, comes with a lot more features, and is still only 60.00. I'll go with that all day.
