Hel was the boss' wife's name. She died & the engineer built his idea of her to be eternal. Maria was the real girl looking for a mediator to settle social/labor issues peacefully. The boss had the engineer transform the machine to visually represent maria but be programmed to promote HIS agenda (control & segregation of the low class). The engineer however, programmed it to cause a violent ( and necessary) uprising in the underworld.
