X Windows System Design Principles, a lecture by James Gettys. This video has been recorded on February, 1991.
From University Video Communications' catalog:
The X Window System has become widely accepted by many manufacturers and users of computer systems. X provides network, transparent access to display servers, allowing local and remote client programs to access a users display. X is used on high-performance workstation displays as well as X terminals, and client programs run on everything from micro- to supercomputers. This talk emphasizes system design principles, using X as an example.

A video in 1991 with an analogue of Powerpoint/Keynote and a multi monitor setup! I couldn't even dream of that in 1991 and this was when I was dreaming of the Amiga (and finally got an A1200 for Christmas the next year)

I was dreaming of the Amiga which might have been able to do this if only the software was there. Not sure if you could do it only from floppies though.

Thanks for posting. Please fix for "X Window". ;) Also, isn't it Jim Gettys and not James? 0:58 en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Jim_Gettys

The smiley was there so my comment looks more gentle. But if you did not noticed the smiley : YES, all videos on ComputerHistory channel are very interesting and rare material and this one is no exception. But X Window System without a damn s at Window !

I know. The person that put the video probably picked the first title he saw and didn't watch the entire thing.

If this video was recorded in Feb of 1991, I assume that the Linux wasn't yet born. Which OS was he running on those desktops for presentations. Which technology was in use before X window system development started for Unix servers.

Before X, Unix systems just didn't have graphical interfaces for the most part. He is almost certainly running Ultrix, which was DEC's flavour of UNIX for their systems. He's probably using a fairly high end DECstation. And as he said, from about 1986 onward, Unix had graphical windowing via X.EDIT: After more thought, he's probably actually using VMS (as he seems to be using DECpresent for the slides, which I believe was a VMS-only software?) which is a bit odd, because as far as I know VMS used DECwindows and not X11. Though maybe that had changed by that point, I'm not sure.

x11, i3, fedora > Windows killer. Once you get used to it, it's almost uncomfortable to use Windows again.
