As someone who has had many unsuccessful hunts myself, I never regret going out into the wilderness, regardless of what I come home with. You become a lot more in touch with nature when you're just stopping and paying full attention to your surroundings. Listening to the squirrels and birds, noticing all the signs of animal activity, paying attention to the wind... A freezer full of venison is always a nice reward though. Your hard work will eventually be rewarded.

So fun to go along on your hunts. I'm 71 and have hunted all my life, learned from my father who was never skunked. Elk, moose, bears, deer, he always succeeded. As a skipper on his own boat we had salmon from out off the Washington coast, canned and a freezer filled We had grouse, pheasants, all that meat every year in the freezer. Life with Dad was AWESOME. One of MANY skills to hunting is to never camp in your hunting area, youll just push the deer away from you. Always set up nearby and get up in the dark, get to where you want to hunt sit guietly in your vehicle/canoe until break of light, then proceed. Search with your eyes, not your binos. Use scope or binos only to confirm antlers once you've spotted the deer. The Great Oz has spoken

Flatbread 1tbsp oil Pinch of salt 1 cup Flour Boil 1 1/2 cups of water with oil until boil then take off of heat and add flour and stir vigorously Then roast over a campfire. It’s a pretty filing food. I usually have some powder gravy and make dumplings with the dough

You and Clay are the reason why I got into grouse hunting. Something I found is that grouse will always stay in the same area like 1mile radius for their entire life. If you've found them once, you've found a spot to keep returning to. That's what helped me land my first ever with a recurve bow last month

Love the videos. Just a quick tip as a lifelong hunter, probably 75% of all the deer I’ve ever seen have been within the first and last 30 minutes of daylight. I’d suggest definitely staying out until it’s actually dark, you’ll have a much higher chance of seeing something!

I went deer hunting with my grandpa when I was about 12. We walked a long ways from the truck and we finally did come across a good sized buck. My grandpa said we didn’t want to have to carry it that far back, so he shot in the air to scare it off. I was just glad to go “hunting”. The experience of the hunt and the hike was amazing. That’s one of the best memories I have with him. Just spending the day hiking around.

I watch lots of hunting videos. Most of them are guided hunts and success is very high as is the expense, I have taken a good number of those. By far and large most of my hunting was hunting deer in Pennsylvania first with my dad and later with my two boys. The largest part of those were unsuccessful but that was never a deterrant. On the hunts that are successful it erases all those cold hours when it seems there isn't a deer in the county your hunting in, Experiencing the beauty and solitude of the woods and sometimes seeing a lot of deer sign is all that you need to bring you back .Hunting is the real experience, success is a bonus. I wish you many years of both.

Xander, You have found a great spot to hunt next year. Scout for intersecting trails next summer. Find as many as possible so it allows you to play the wind. I use ground blinds with a buddy heater. I am old and enjoy my comfort. Get in that blind in the dark. Sit as long as you can stand it. As you age you get better at it. I can see you harvesting a deer next year. My wife and I love your adventures. You make us laugh.

Invariably, when I take an older person on their first hunt it is usually after the first snowfall. I buy a bag of the chocolate covered raisins and put them in my jacket pocket. When following deer tracks ahead of the new guy I "seed" the trail with alleged fresh deer poop. To prove the freshness i will scoop up a couple and chew them to guarantee how long ago they passed.

To help with your confusion, a rub is where deer use their antlers to rub a tree. A scrape is where they actually use their hoofs to scrape the ground. Reason why you always see a low lying branch above a scrape is because it is what we call a “licking limb”. They will pee in the scrape and lick the limb letting does knkw they’re in rut. Does willl also use that scrape to let the buck know she is in heat. I don’t live in bear or wolf county but maybe that’s why you don’t sit before dark and after dark but down in the south we like to get in our stands or hunting position 45 minutes before sunrise and we will not leave our position until after dark. Right at sunrise and right at dark is PRIME time for deer movement. This may help you be more successful in harvesting a deer

Also you won’t catch me camping in a tent in bear and wolf country lol . We have a small small population of black bear here. It’s actually very rare anyone sees one and every so many years we will get a confirmed cougar sighting. I’ve never seen a bear or got a picture of one on trail cam but I have seen a cougar only once. But yea. I’m not familiar with bears, wolves, and cougars. So I’m not camping in a tent in bear, wolf, cougar country

The biggest tip I can give you as a hunter is every time you walk through the woods stop every minutes or so and just stand still and listen. Your ears are one of your greatest powers in the woods I feel with your eyes as a close second. With how well some animals can camouflage your eyes won’t see everything.

Hey Xander, its great you are desireing to bag your own meat for all the said reasons. There really is alot to be said for a rewarding primal hunt. The forest floor was typically loud for any movement. In those conditions; your luck of seeing a thing is small. I dont wanna tell you what to do: so I will only suggest a tree stand, gets you out of the noise and can help with your scent too. And dont camp any where near where you plan to hunt. In Washington wolves had to be reintroduced and they have thrived. I was at Cooper Lake, just on the eastern slop of the Cascades, to do a kayak trip around this pristine alpine lake. I was the only person there. A stunning beauty of a lake at the base of Glacier strewn spired peaks jutting straight up, with 2000 ft cliffs laden with snowfields and waterfalls ...breath-taking. There was no wind...a mist covered the lake surface, brilliant read vine maples all along the shore lined with alpine Noble firs. Silent, not a sound....then the deepest richest howl, echoed off the water nearly dropped me to my knees. Just 400 yds across the lake up into the forest on the slope. I'll always remember that! The sound that rivals the bellow of an elk, I consider that howl of the wolf to be THE sound of wilderness personified.

If there are no rocks and there are birch logs around you can also protect the ground with a couple layers of those. Since they're never quite dry they don't burn through easily, but they do burn enough to contribute to the coal base.

Usually you’re suppose to scrape the black off the chaga with a brush or bristle and then grind it up and put it in a tea bag for it to have more flavour I know because my dad is a native medicine man

My sister's husband goes out in the woods for hunting nearly every weekend. In 9 of 10 times he doesn't get anything but when he gets a deer they have a full freezer of meat for a good time. Btw, the permission for shooting a deer in Germany cost 250€. That sounds much but when you check out the meat prices and compare it to the amount of meat you get from one deer it's really worth it.

When wearing those rubber boots you will not leave much ground scent. Just try to avoid touching anything with your hands or brushing up against branches etc with your clothing in areas you plan to hunt. Once you get in intel on a spot to hunt, figure out ambush spot based on wind direction and be completely still. Travel routes on edges of marsh or lake can be good as the deer must go around these areas.

Try staying out until legal light is officially over. A lot of times deer won’t even start moving until the last half hour of legal light. You are leaving in the middle of prime time. Cool videos! I wish you success

From my experience, and i still do it, is patience wins the game. When its been 2-3 hrs and nothing happened, give it a few more, they'll show up. And listen to those ravens, they'll let u know if animals are around

Hey, I hunt deer with the same iron sight, just the ball. And have taken over 10 of them and up to 50 yards (although I say keep it within 30 yards). I a dense woods like those, that shotgun is perfect for the max range you will see.

A good campsite and hot food makes any hike better. Not sure what you would do with the deer body but I like seeing the variety of activities you do and the evolution of your camping gear. I use some of the ideas for my trips.

Ok here I go again it is so refreshing to see someone who enjoys the hunting. I know the point of hunting is to harvest what ever it is your hunting but I think so much pressure has been placed on just the killing that the enjoyment of just being out in the woods is missed. Keep it up. I do know had that been me as soon as I switched out the shotgun for the rifle I would’ve thought I was walking through a grouse sanctuary. One more tip from an old camper never release that much natural gas that close to an open flame the results can be lets just say less than enjoyable. Thanks for sharing your trip. 👍🏻
