I feel like a lot of the “edgy left” tries not to use the r slur in general, but instead of that I’ve heard a lot of them say things like “I genuinely think this person might have a disability like I’m really concerned for them” when talking about some crazy right winger, which is just as mean spirited, but also insanely condescending and directly compares the target to people with mental conditions. Additionally I’m a former edgy gamer bro converted by destiny and vaush amongst others, but it was in no part due to ableist, racist, etc language. If they were vocally against it and calling it out all the time, I may have found it annoying back then, but my opinions of them weren’t improved in any way based on them using the language themselves

Omg yes, that annoys me to no end. It isn't _better_ if you use "proper" terms if you are still doing it in a derogatory way. @oliver16163 жыл бұрын
I have a question! If it's condescending to say things like "I'm worried they have some sort of mental condition" to others being badly behaved because you associate bad things with that certain mental condition, what if you're genuinely worried about the person without prejudice against mental conditions or disorders and you genuinely just want to see them get better? How would you express that without it coming off as belittling? I'm asking this as an autistic person, I genuinely don't know how I'd express that sort of concern towards someone. Maybe if it's like "I hope someone in their life can help them get the help they needs"??? Since you don't need a mental condition to need support as mental health needs taking care of too.
@eljefe24003 жыл бұрын
@@oliver1616 in the context of my comment they’re using it disingenuously since they’re making fun of them while also saying that. Even if it’s from good intentions though, I think when people try to say “I’m worried they have a mental condition” even if they mean well, it will usually at best seem kinda like an accusation of “them having a problem”, and most people don’t take well to having things about their lives speculated about like that. If you say something like “something seems off with them/you, i hope they’re/you’re doing well” it should be much easier for good intentions to come across. If it’s someone you know you could also let them know that you’re willing to listen to them if they want to talk, but to avoid assuming that “there’s something wrong”, I’d probably only say that if they say that they’ve had a bad day or aren’t doing great or whatever.

@@somethingsomething9006: I would have thought that the main issue, that still stands, is HOW people use these insults. So I really don’t think it matters who you are when you use slurs as they were intended, as insults.
@somethingsomething90064 жыл бұрын
@@alexbennet4195 It's true that it's different if you're part of the group that the slur is aimed at, but it can still hurt those within the group to hear those slurs, regardless of context. Of course it would be different if I was straight and jokingly referred to my gay friends as faggots, but in the end, if the word triggers them, then it won't matter the context. That's why I said you have to know what kind of people you're with who won't care if you use that word. Finally someone is bringing up this issue because ableism really needs to talked about more on the left. I usually just watch and don't usually like to comment on drama, especially since I'm older than many of the people in Xandethal's circle and getting into a argument online about the r-slur or any slur seems moot. Especially if I don't know these people on a personal level. With that being said, it's really hurtful when someone who is supposedly on the side of social justice and on the left in general will tend to stand up for other minorities, but when it comes to lifting up the voices of disabled people, we're either ignored or spoken over and that makes someone like myself who actually likes a lot of Xanderhal's content, makes me not want to engage with the left because he is basically saying thay my existence is "wrong" and that me and other people like me don't belong in leftist discourse. As an autistic person myself that struggles with other mental health issues and low self esteem, it hurts to have the r-slur and to have "autism" used as an insult, flung towards not only yourself but other neurodivergent and disabled folks because whether he realizes it or not, Xanderhal and others like him are not making me feel very welcome on the left. It may just be a word to him, but to me and I'm sure many others, it's sending the message that disabled people should just keep quiet. On a final note, I don't think that Xanderhal is a horrible person, just that when he gets really angry, he tends to not think about how his words affect others. I definitely do think that Xanderhal is a huge advantage to spreading leftist discourse online, but he really needs to take a step back and listen to other people's opinions as well and not just get irrationally angry and call people who bring up valid points, " wokescolds".

I keep seeing people talking about "reclaiming" the r slur and it's like...most of the time they're not "reclaiming" it theyre just using it the same way they always have but with an excuse it's still ableist because unless you actively remove it from the context of being a slur of being an insult of being a demeaning term based off of mentally disabled people you're still using it like a slur there's a huge difference between say, a lesbian reclaiming the d slur and using it in their username or something and using it as an insult towards another lesbian People REALLY want to say the r slur and it's really weird like...you know it's a *slur* right? A lot of my disabilities are physically visible and occurred over the last years of high school due to a degenerative disease. I’ve lost function of my bowels and bladder and it’s extremely embarrassing being so young and also having very ummm... socially awkward conditions. People understand my mobility issues but then it’s so awkward and completely killed a lot of my relationships because they’re grossed out/feel that I’m different because I can’t do what they do. Being part of this community really showed me that there is no way of saying the r-slur in a reclaiming matter. It’s kind of like, there are so many people who struggle so much more that if I called myself that, I’d be bringing them down too. I don’t think there’s a way to say the slur and have it be positive, particularly since the r-slur has undergone so much transformation as being a diagnosis for intellectual disability, to neurodivergency, to physical disabilities. I think people with intellectual disabilities really suffer as they were the main “audience” in which the word originated. I don’t think it’s fair for people to use the “new” and “transformed” definition over time to justify saying something originally used to exclude, undermine and humiliate people with intellectual disabilities. Idk if that makes sense hahahaha, but this is an issue that’s deep into my heart. It hurts so much to see such discrimination to a group I love so much.

Thank you so much for making this video 💜💜💜 people shouldn’t say this word!! It upsets me so much that ableism is so casual nowadays and people are so misinformed and ignorant. James Marriott used autism as an insult in a video he did and said the r-slur in the e boys podcast and nothing has happened. I do enjoy his content and I don’t think anyone should be cancelled, but he just got away with this casual ableism. Again, Thank you for making this video and educating people 💜💜🌈🌈🌻🌻

this dude has much growing up to do, in one of his twitter rampages he mocked a sexual assault victim yet tried to back pedal by saying he wasn't making fun of them, even though that's exactly what he was doing. the topic was on lolis, and i'm not going to get into that debate, the point is you don't do that.

As someone who just got diagnosed by their therapist with ADHD at 23, thanks for making this video. Makes me feel less alone.

It's funny how much ADHD and autism overlap - I could hardcore relate to almost everything you talked about in your symptoms description and experience, including the "-" contagious touch thing, (I had that done to me in primary 4 for months, it was really isolating). I think they're comorbid, and probably genetically linked? My little cousin on my Mum's side has ADHD, and since I have autism we've speculated that it comes from my Mum's side. Funnily enough, although I was bullied a LOT in both primary and high school, no one ever called me the r-word, because I didn't (and they didn't) know I had autism, I was just "weird". It reallly tires me out when people on the internet use autistic as an all-purpose adjective insult. Great video by the way! I thought it was funny that you mentioned Merlin (I assume the British TV show) because you visually remind me of Merlin from the show a lot! Fun coincidence.

i’ve seen awareness posts on instagram before, saying that the r slur is harmful, and the comments on those are always so defensive of their use of it. always makes me kinda sad

Thank you for this video. I'm autistic and I want a community free from ableism. This does needs to be addressed in the left. One of the reasons I became a leftist was because the right doesn't care at all about disabled people.

When u said about the 'moe touch' that hit hard home. Ppl did the same thing to me and its so dehumanising. TwT

I remember people doing that to a kid in my primary school (ages 3 - 10) and even a trans guy in secondary school (ages 11 - 16). People are gross and I hope they change.

@@lostotter1956 yes I had the most trouble in primary school with it. It carried on in secondary, but was much more prevelent in primary

It's so annoying when people complain about not being able to use a given slur anymore. You shouldn't WANT to. I don't miss people using my autism as an insult.

I've been listening to xanderhall for the past couple of months and I think he makes great videos and has some great takes, I didn't hear him use that word but I'm really surprised he did, I genuinely didn't assume he would say something like that, I genuinely expected him to be a bit more empathetic towards other people This was a great video and I have autism so I can understand what its like to be called something like that Happily though I came across this video and I'm very interested in checking out some more of your content this was a great video

When you explain your things, I relate to them a lot.. and I am NOT diagnosed (YET) - (but I have a Psykiatist plan for December forward to hopefully get some answers) but you really helped me find words to explain my situations, especially because I am VERY sound sensitive- and I hyperfocus ALOT, or i space out and my hands shake and my legs and i sometimes just dance in my chair, for no reason

I don't think Xan is a bad guy necessarily or a grifter but his fans need to be way more critical of him.

I feel similar about lefties or people in general using my genitalia as an insult (what has my vagina done to deserve this?) or generally slut shaming language. It's not cool.

The way Xanderhal comes across when he does this sort of stuff, is that he wants so bad to be a white savior, he wants to be RIGHT, but he doesn't have the sympathy and compassion needed to really tackle on these issues. It feels like this is a game to him and he wants to be on the "winning team".

Hi! Autistic, ADHD trans person here. Thank u for this. I constantly get called a retard by my dad and brothers which. Is horrible!

Xanderhals style is "imitating the edgy from a leftist side" and that in itself is not bad. But yes, improving on his Ableism is not contradictory to that style, he should really do that.
