Smooth Jazz seems to be mostly instrumental R&B, whereas Fusion is mostly Jazz with an R&B flavor. Kenny G watered down the fusion he was doing with Jeff Lorber to the point of making 'Smooth Jazz' something that serious musicians really didn't want to be associated with. My favorites are the current Fusion artists like Valeriy Stepanov, Snarky Puppy, Sonny Emory, Yohan Kim and Dirty Loops. Jeff Lorber is still doing it. There's some Smooth Jazz I like by Corey Wong, Nate Smith and Vulfpeck... Just my 2 cents
