Shot in the dark, but I think the game Nate is referring to go multi-plat could be Hi-Fi Rush. It was by far the most critically acclaimed game last year from Xbox, and has been requested relentlessly for a physical copy of the game, which Nintendo and Playstation support more of.

It depends on messaging. It's a high risk gamble, I agree; but if they are able to use select IP at present as bait to hook one in the future, it could pay off in a big way.

Xbox should not put first party games on other consoles. That is a mistake and will start a death spiral. Lose more console sales, so they put more games on other platforms to make up the revenue, so they lose more console sales, etc

I've said it before & i'll say it again.. 10 years has been enough with Phil Spencer. He was great for acquisitions, backwards compat programs & bringing some goodwill back to the Xbox brand.. but their mixed-messaging (& general anti-exclusive attiude) is gonna doom both their plans for Xbox & Game Pass growth. Its never a good thing to confuse your remaining customer base... and if the vibes you want to send out are "Xbox/Game Pass are the most optional platforms out there"... then good job Phil, most people will remain on the more popular platforms & just wait for your software to land there. I would have thought MS was smarter than this 'short-term profit gain, long-term uncertainty' path they seem to be going down. But nope, they really do just want to become another Sega/Ubisoft/Square/EA... yeesh.

I'm not really sure why anyone would be optimistic about Xbox at this point. Starfield came out, presumably got decent sales based entirely off being a Bethesda game, but had no legs in the gaming culture because people realized Starfield has already been a game since at least 2011 We've seen nothing of substance from Fable, and it's always been OK at best anyway 343 lost 95 staff, and still hasn't managed to release a great Halo game that was a complete package at launch. Admittedly, I haven't played Infinite multiplayer since pretty early on, but I just got a new PC so I've been thinking of getting back into it. Still, I can't be optimistic that 343 is suddenly going to get their shit together and launch a good, complete experience whenever Halo 7 happens. It would be silly of me to do so, since it hasn't happened the last 3 entries and Halo has almost always been cursed with turbulent development anyway, including when Halo was good. Perfect Dark has already had troubled development and had to bring in another team. Even Banjo-Kazooie, as much as I want it and as much as it should be the easiest W ever, I worry about because there's a good chance it's somehow monkey's paw'd into something no one wanted (like Nuts & Bolts, which was at least a "decent" game, just not what people wanted) or made off-putting and weird somehow (like the new Battletoads). You have Everwild, which as far as I'm concerned is vaporware until they prove otherwise Microsoft is seemingly stopping development on Halo MCC, which was one of the few things I was giving them credit for over the years. I don't care what's going on, MCC development should continue basically indefinitely. I mean I don't want to be entirely down on Microsoft. It's good Infinite seems to actually be recovering (as little as I care about it), I hope Iron Galaxy can make a new KI, Psychonauts 2 was a W, Hi-Fi Rush was a W. It just seems so few and far between though, and when they do squander a possible W it becomes "Oh I dunno maybe next time it'll be better". I feel like 10 years from now, it's going to be the same thing. Another Halo game will have weird shenanigans, Elder Scrolls VI will come out and have NPCs glitching through the floor and their eyes popping out and have even worse quests and dialogue, Everwild still won't be out, and everyone will be pissed because Microsoft decided the Xbox Neo will have some forced Copilot AI bullshit that no one wants

On the subject of Gears 6, the rumors were that they didn't immediately jump into Gears 6. They spent the first three years following the release of Gears 5 working on not only learning UE5, but also building a smaller new IP as a way to practice. Gears 6 remained in pre-production that entire time. At the start of 2023 The Coalition also suffered layoffs which resulted in the cancellation of that new IP as well as another title they had in development(possibly the long rumored Gears Collection), but then the entirety of The Coalition shifted their focus onto Gears 6 and it finally entered full development. So it's possible it'll release in 2025, but a part of me is expecting 2026.

Regarding the Completionist scandal i think one of the potential blow backs will be people donate less overall and more over those donations allow for sizable tax breaks for the streamers lowering the ceiling for it to be a viable option. So not only do the causes suffer but the community of organizers as a whole. That said you're both right when you say you should donate directly. Thats always been true. No need for a middle man at all. The charity itself is already a middle man fundamentally so added yet another layer of open palms is needless. My point though is while people were/do use these streams/events to donate they do help the streamers make their way quite a bit and if people stop doing it it will have noticable impacts on the lives of people long term as a consequence on Jirards actions.

Apparently it was already said that Microsoft/Phil tried to get gamepass on Nintendo at least once if not twice. An analyst heard from someone at Nintendo a while back that Nintendo gave Microsoft/Phil a HARD no to gamepass. Makes perfect sense as it seems like Nintendo wants to do their own thing with online and subscriptions even if some fans hate it. Good analysis on Microsoft baiting people with putting a game from a series out for multiplatform but making the sequel exclusive to them so people buy Microsoft’s systems for it. Good way to lure people to them but the caveat is that some people like me don’t like anything that Microsoft has that’s theirs. 😂. I know I don’t care for anything Microsoft has that’s first party. 😂. But it’s just my thoughts on it. Great video! I always try to listen to you when I get the chance. Keep up the good work! Xbox is in an interesting spot because their hardware is not selling well at all. I know that their goalpost is different and they’re more focused on boosting the subscriptions, but we are now at a place where the definition of “Xbox ecosystem” is changing. When you’re in third place, you’re gonna be more likely to put your games on the hardware with way way way more units out there. I feel like this is just another step into the direction of Xbox becoming more of a service and a publisher than a hardware maker. I just don’t know how sustainable that option really is either. That being said, I hope we finally see some of the games that get talked about this time of year every year. I feel like I’ve been hearing every January since 2020 about how this is the year for Xbox. I want it to be so, but so far, I’m a bit skeptical. Sony also has essentially nothing announced, same with Nintendo, but it’s a bit different when you look at track records. I want all the companies to do well because competition is good, so we’ll see.

Great discussion like always mate. I feel for Xbox fans and can understand the frustration with Microsoft putting what supposedly was exclusives on other platforms. My guess is that the game they will bring over to other platforms is Hifi Rush but for the switch as Microsoft made it clear that they don’t see the switch as a competitor and their main focus is software not hardware. Nintendo and Microsoft have been buddy buddy so I wouldn’t be surprised if Hifi Rush comes to switch.

I feel Hellblade 2 is that September game and Avowed will hopefully hit in late October or November. Regardless 2024 "feels" like it could be a very good year for Xbox owners. I really hope Indiana is not another FPS style game. Xbox could really use a 3rd person action/adventure game and what would be a better IP than Indiana Jones. Prototype is available to purchase now for X1/Series. Transformers and Singularity would be very nice. I been a Xbox gamer since 2001 and see no reason why they wouldnt port their games to other systems. Just makes since with what Xbox is trying to do with gaming everywhere. For me its about the games but MS wants the dollars. Great show as always and look forward to the next.

I’m going to disagree with this whole baiting people take Nate. Only because it’s always backfires for Xbox. If the game has an exclusive sequel people will just “wait for the port”. Even if there isn’t a port that’s how I’ve seen most people operate. I mean any other system you’d be right. But people expect MS games on other platforms these days. The rest of the take about making more money I agree with. MS games would sell crazy well everywhere. People just don’t want to own an Xbox. Which is fine for MS because their business doesn’t need a console.

I'm not a fanboy, I play my Series X WAY more than my PS5 and sometimes more than my Switch... I honestly did NOT like Statfield at all... I am also the type of person who is completely over the (imho) boring Bethesda formula. I think the only people that liked it are the ones who accept Bethesda style RPGs with all their flaws that I can no longer stomach. From terrible brain dead quests, to playing fetch, to having entire planets want to kill you when you fight ONE stranger, and its all just not fun for me... Especially after playing Baldurs Gate 3. Baldurs Gate 3 feels linear compared to Starfield in terms of setting and location, but holy crap I felt more freedom of choice, gameplay, and weight of consequences that I have EVER felt in Bethesda games. That said I don't like Forza or racing games, I still play Halo Infinite even though the extremely useless weapons really frustrate me, but what kept me on Xbox was really Gamepass and the huge list of games I was curious about and would never pay full price for. I think Gamepass is what makes the Series X my console of choice, but I don't think objectively I can say Microsoft had a "great year." They had an ok year, Hi-Fi Rush was a pleasant surprise, I just need Microsoft to have QUALITY CONTROL measures taken so we don't get another garbage Redfall again... This is constructive criticism because I want them to swing harder and bring it to the playing field and stop saying stupid crap like "we can never beat Sony or Nintendo anyway." I think Microsoft making Nintendo or atleast Sony sweat and get nervous is HUGE cause Sony when unchecked becomes the monster they are now with PS5 (completely anti-consumer and anti-creativity).

Microsoft didn't have a good 2023 from a consumer standpoint. Activision-Blizzard acquisition at this juncture means jack for the consumer. Nothing new on Game Pass, Activision's main IP's are a mess right now with Call of Duty being phoned in, Diablo IV failing to maintain itself as fans drop off, and Overwatch 2 exploded on the runway before it even launched taking Overwatch 1 out entirely when it blew. As it stands now that acquisition is another big "What If" and it's not a question I enjoy pondering when you look at the state of everything else. Starfield's problem isn't that it is a bad game like Redfall. The problem is the same thing that plagued Fable; over promising and under delivering. In the year where Baldur's Gate 3 blew the doors off what an RPG could be Bethesda's efforts look all the more dated and lackluster in presentation. This also follows Fallout 76 which isn't a good game and some were already going weary of Bethesda's formula back with Fallout 4. They need to evolve and simply haven't as the industry caught up to them and then passed them by. Forza was a swing and a miss by Forza standards. Career mode is boring and grindy with the PC version being a bonked mess of a port that people are still having issues with. There's a reason it is rated so terribly on Steam and no it isn't Xbox tax; it's a half-finished game with lacking content, a $70 price tag, and no other mainline Forza options to buy because Forza 7 has been delisted for years. Add in that the game is always online and there's a lot to be concerned about here when you remember Forza 7 was listed for barely 4 years. We're still waiting on big name titles shown off years ago. We're still waiting on a release date for Hellblade 2 for crying out loud. Redfall, Starfield, and Forza were the games that were supposed to be out last year. During summer of 2022 Phil Spencer said those games would be out in the next 12 months and they weren't except for Redfall. None of them met expectations either. We're still waiting for the floodgates of content to open and Microsoft to prove they can manage multiple studios with multiple IP across a lengthy period of time for high quality releases the way Sony and Nintendo do all. The. Time. And once again we find Microsoft launching games they bought mid-production and once again find Microsoft launching those games with issues and lamenting that they didn't get involved sooner. The entire team behind Redfall wanted more time and some wanted it outright canceled but Microsoft's own internal review process had it rated much higher than it actually was. That should be raising some serious alarm bells big time when you look at Microsoft's entire release schedule and how their biggest games turn out. Not sure who is getting excited for Microsoft's future when they can't even maintain their core IP's like Halo, Forza, and Gears let alone something they've owned for decades now like Banjo. I'm sure they are totally gonna revive and fix everything Activision-Blizzard ignored and damaged over the years. Any day those floodgates of high quality content is going to open... Or Microsoft will continue the trudge towards being the Netflix of gaming; content to support a subscription service where quality isn't as important as just getting something out there. Edit: The excuse making from Nate is hilarious. If 2023 is Microsoft showing they can deliver quality then I'm out of their ecosystem. Redfall isn't quality. Forza Motorsport isn't quality. Starfield isn't quality. It's big studio names and IP masquerading as quality when each is lacking severely and it's a common theme for Microsoft's tent pole releases. It's not about competing with Sony; it's about delivering on their promise. 2023 doesn't exist in a vacuum. Phil's hype in 2022 for 2023 matters. Having an entire down generation with the Xbox One still matters. Having a slow start and release schedule for the Xbox Series still matters. Sony is literally delivering on high quality sequels from half a decade ago while Microsoft is still trying to figure out how to get a good game out the door that people will want a sequel for. Who is lining up for Halo Infinite 2? No one which is why those single player plans got canned and the team at 343 gutted behind the scenes working on that content. That's Microsoft's biggest IP. Usually love your takes but this episode feels like you two are huffing Copium laced with Hopium all while wearing blinders to the rest of the industry, Microsoft's own promises and history, and the reality of their releases. There's a reason Starfield's numbers are how many people played the game because other metrics don't look great. It's why two weeks after launch Microsoft was bragging about 10 million players and then a few months later in December brags they've got 12 million players now. People aren't flocking to Starfield nor are they sticking with it. Why? Because it didn't meet the promised hype and Bethesda's formula has grown stale.

Feel like halo actually have a super solid campaign minus 2 things. But also that Multi Platform release idea is (sure) a great idea for business. But that whole bait and draw doesn’t work if it’s only one game that garners enough love outside of the system. Hi-Fi Rush being in PS even if a sequel is announced isn’t gonna make them change their mind unless they do this frequently. They’ll have to do this same tactic at least 3 times and follow up in a timely manner and all 3 would have to be absolutely grabbers. Sounds like a mid idea as a Xbox fan tho. I wouldn’t see a point in keeping a Xbox if I can just buy their games anywhere else (competitor wise). Takes the fun out of owning multiple systems

It's ridiculous to suggest such a thing. Of course a person isn't going to buy an Xbox for a sequel, they'll just wait for it on the platform they played the first game on, regardless of if it's coming or not. It's a horrible decision, no "if's" and "but's" about it.

I dont think id will reboot DOOM in the traditional sense of reboot, itll be like 2016 again where its sort of a reset but every game (besides 3) is still canon. I justnexpect a straight up sequel, though not written to require you to play 2016 and Eternal. The devs have spoken about how there's many loose ends in the universe to explore after Eternal (Maykr people turn into Quake monsters now that The Father is gone, there's some sort of primordial being who was also trying to prevent Doomguy from killing the Khan Maykr and preventing the destruction of earth (who they accidentally revealed was the Dark Lord but it turns out an intern just fucked with the subtitles and made a mistake) etc). Im expecting Quake to be involved with their next project in some way, possibly a crossover though it wont be called Doom X Quake or something, just Doom.

It will not be hard to convince people to buy an XB if they have another console when they can get 4 AAA $70 games for $15 a month with Gamepass Ultimate. Not to mention all of the other games that come to Gamepass. Economic down turn makes people more frugal and Gamepass is the best deal in gaming.

I think Xbox will backtrack this strategy after the amount of backlash they'll receive. It's a "TV, TV, TV" or "we have a console for you it's called the Xbox 360" level of fuck-up. They'll undermine their former/future acquisitions, talking points, expansion plans, their brand, their platform, their showcases and above all else, they'll undermine Game Pass by doing this. Every single time they talk about their plans or reveal games, the conversation will revolve around port-begging. It won't be about Xbox, how good the games look, how it's great you can play those games on PC/cloud, not about the value of Game Pass, it's all going to be about "when is this coming to PS or Switch?". There'll be literally nothing they can do about it because they oppened the "3rd party publisher Pandora's Box", EVERYONE inclunding Xbox fans will view them as a EA, Take Two, Ubisoft, Capcom, etc... there's no closing that door once it's open. Disastrous move and everyone involved in this decision should get fired this goes to Phil as well, it's THAT bad!

IF Microsoft : Publishes their games on PS and Nintendo systems as stand alone ecosystems (aka no game pass , no Microsoft accounts or anything or those things being optional ) I'd be willing to buy their stuff on those systems , if they require attachment to those things as well , I'm not touching them. Also your talk of "old game on (other system ) and we make new game exclusive" sounds like what Sony is doing with the PC situation where they're putting put 3 or 4 + year old games on pc that are about to get a sequel announced and or released
