I’m sure their investors wants. It’s the Uber-model - offer convenience at a low price point and once you have consumers in a stranglehold you up prices to recoup the initial losses in the “nice guy”-face, and now the consumers have nowhere else to go because the competitors have been wiped out. It’s what Microsoft are doing with all their acquisitions, they don’t give a single shit about making great games, it’s all about market share %. From a business perspective it’s the natural continuation of the move towards “games-as-service” Steam started. The only way of stopping it is if consumers speak with their wallets, and as we all know by now, gamers certainly won’t. They’ll make any old excuse to themselves why this one hyped game is okay to pre-order etc. We all know it. People have been putting up with exceedingly expensive hardware that won’t even run games at a stable framerate because optimisation hardly is a thing anymore. People happily shell out $1000 for a GPU that will be obsolete in 12 months and won’t be able to run the newest games already on the market because they are utterly broken. The games industry treats us all like fools because that is what we collectively are.

Everyone I play with on xbox has gamepass, so I wouldn't say its something no one wants. It comes with gold so your essentially paying £4 a month for the games which for me more than pays for starfield and payday 3, yeah I don't get to keep those games but once I 100% starfield I probably won't play for a few years anyway, I also got a 3 month free crunchyroll subscription too which I'm enjoying.

There are a fuck ton of people that would rather have a collection of digital games than lug around a case with games they gotta swap around, especially when there’s a risk of the cartridge/disk breaking. It’s way more convenient and you don’t need Internet to play the games just to install them.

This is why piracy will never go away. Whether you support it or not, people will still do it. Except now, it's going to include people that would pay for it, but will NOT purchase the game if they can't own their copy in perpetuity. The companies are biting themselves in the ass long term.

Exactly. I've argued this in Nintendo forums with fans, who are understandbly upset with pirated Nintendo games. Nintendo are notoriously anti-emulation, but if they were not so anti-consumer i.e. shutting down stores, lack luster virtual console and not giving Nintendo fans what they want, emulation may not have grown to be as popular as it is today. Pirates are going to pirate no matter what, but corporate greed makes pirates of once legitimate consumers. I was a huge Apple fan back in the day and purchase hundreds of movies and tv shows via iTunes amassing a 1000+ iTunes media library. Until I began to realize the constrictive nature of Apple's proprietary format .m4V and iTunes gatekeeping i.e. had to log in and authenticate into iTunes to watch my videos, can only really use iTunes etc.. A sunken cost fallacy is a trap, however I managed to replace all my iTunes media via physical discs and ripped them to my storage devices into .MKV formats. The process took a couple years and of course expensive to duplicate my entire library, BUT it allowed me to actually own my content that I bought as well as more freedom to play it on any device and software without being restricted to iTunes. This is the same with games. I was all in into Steam, then I migrated to GoG and looking for ways to duplicate my once Steam library into DRM-free alternatives.

Long-term? What long-term? Most of the companies had shifted to making as much money as possible, as quick as possible, breaking laws and disregarding everything in their way. Like parasites, sucking shares values from one company and moving to other. And the best thing is - they get caught, then they're sorry. And yet there are still people who defend them. And the cycle continues.

No, they're taking a hit now to make it a permanent in the future. Like unity, they know they're screwing certain people but if they get the cash rolling in from the big fish then they don't care. Every publisher knows now are lean times, so now's the best time to push something like this so it becomes ubiquitous tomorrow. If they can weather the storm and not pull a unity they'll have a stronger position and then because that's the new normal, we pay or we don't play. It's not about doing what's right anymore, it's about not being the one on the bottom and then needing to pull a unity to keep being profitable.

Oh no, they will absolutely kill piracy in the future. Piracy will be dead once streaming for video games becomes good and a feasible thing. You won't be able to download any games. You'll be forced to stream games, which will ensure no one gets access to the game files. Then they will charge hourly for games, and if they decide to stop providing service to a game, it will disappear forever. This is the wonderful future that awaits us, thanks Microsoft. 2023: Purchase Digital Games 2050: Streaming Games at an Hourly rate

Gamepass is being offered at a loss to encourage people to get used to paying for games through subscription. As we've seen with streaming services, they don't intend to offer the same breadth of content for low prices forever. They'll gradually reduce the available games and ramp up the price, and probably introduce tiers with some content behind additional paywalls. It's actually really manipulative and sinister.
@elhazthorn918

It is. I really don't understand the folks who look at a 'small' subscription fee, and think it's a great deal, when they want you to pay that 'small' fee in perpetuity forever. It's just so myopic. "$5 a month! Forever? And I own nothing? Wow! What a deal!" It's no different to a friend who charges you to play on his Xbox for $5 a month. Now, not to say people don't benefit from Gamepass, it's great if you just wanna try a bunch of stuff, and don't like replaying games you've completed. But I want to own it. I want to be in control of when I get to play it and not be pressured to use the subscription. I like watching the same shows over and over.

Quite good value for 1 dollar, but i would still rather buy and play these games on another platform than to use the xbox store if at all possible. To constantly pay for the subscription to play a few games is insane for me, specially when the price is 15 dollars for ultimate, which some games like Skate 3, fusion frenzy etc requires. That’s how all streaming service work and it honestly won’t work. People will just private music before they pay $20 a month for them. And if the offering on game pass is too limited, they just won’t buy game pass. The only way you’d continue pay a bunch of money for services like this is if the entire market were captured. But it isn’t and never will be because it’s so profitable to just sell games. Like Activision was never gonna out call of duty on gamepass and the only reason they are now is because they were bought by Microsoft. Most other publishers will not follow this direction

I'd say that sadly this is nothing new. Just remembering Activision doing the same with Overwatch (deleted for Overwatch 2.0 making the disk version worthless) and Destiny 2 (deleting the original data, maps and all other things - making disk version worthless) shows that these companies really do not care about preservation. The way their higher ups and production teams think, just shows that they only want what Mr. Krabs is obsessed about.

I like my physical collection too, but let's go over the facts. Steam was ahead of the curve. Modern PCs do not lack disk drives because of Steam, they lack disk drives because put plainly they are slower in every dimension. You never needed disks for gaming. And they have a shorter shelf life than your Steam account. They were just the cheapest way at the time. Keep them around for your consoles, otherwise back your games up on as many drives as you can and crack them if you are really worried about your consumer rights. Yes, it would be nice to have at least the option of a physical copy, but now you don't have to worry about that shit getting scratched up. If you were around back then, you remember the disk protector bullshit that was a huge waste of time and money. You remember the toothpaste and the coke and the praying your game would turn on and work. I would take the quality of games back then over what we have now - modern gaming is complete trash - but dicking around with all that is shit we don't need to go back to. Other hardware in our lives gives us enough trouble. Consider becoming an electrician and making money off your pain.

It's just as we feared since their announcement in gaming in the 90s. Microsoft's trojan horse has always been "be the nice guy" until they lock a particular target market. I remember when I was in the military in the late 90s when MS announced the Xbox, during a time when movies were made about their anti-trust/anti-consumer practices. I was ambitious in the tech industry (post service) and us "geeks" were all concerned of how they could damage gaming. Only a few were hyped about Xbox (though they skewed that with aggressive marketing). OG Xbox was relatively decent, but compared to the competition it wasnt close and still had a huge hill to climb. Then 360 hit and it was godlike. Then microtransactions. Then Xbone, and the draconian bs we all feared nearly came with it. Now here we are with subscriptions and monetizing everything. :/

I think as a PC gamer I gave in and accepted that "retro" (or sometimes even last-gen gaming) inherently eventually means piracy well over a decade ago. There were a few people who called Valve out on this potential future we're now living all the way back when Steam launched but when PC games stopped releasing physically almost entirely and half the ones that did were just CDkeys on a disc all too many of us including myself gave it a pass because we were too busy sucking off those huge cheap Steam sales. Now GamePass is making sure we don't even own a *license* to those games long term and too many of us including myself are giving it a pass again because I'd rather play dozens of games a year than 'own' (but on PC? not really) the one or two games a year I'd be able to afford instead with the prices the damn things release at now. Back up your games and remember that pirates who develop cracks might be seen as crooks now, but we'll be remembering them as pre-emptive historians eventually when bypassing some stupid shut down DRM server is the only way to get anything released in the last two damn decades to run.

This has been an eye opening experience, I honestly didn't know how badly Microsoft has treated Physical Media, let alone preservation. They really shouldn't have ended that Backwards Compatibility program they were doing before, cause now everyone else I feel is taking advantage of their back catalog and rereleasing stuff up the butt, like just the other day the OG Tomb Raider trilogy got a rerelease announcement with gameplay to boot, which is a good start as any, as long as we all can push back over this anti preservation garbage enough, then companies will follow suit, especially more recently with that sinking feeling of the cons of an all digital future started to arrive, delistings, streaming service content jumping ship to another service you name it, it's likely we might be hitting a point where they'll be some laws put in place so us users and the companies that make this content to work under certain guidelines to not be as anti preservation and most importantly anti consumer, cause things like this are becoming more and more common with companies, with pushback and criticism following it like with Microsoft here, there will be changes coming, big ones.

Not to mention how hard Xbox makes it for indies to print physical discs. Their minimum number to print is about 10x the amount PlayStation and Nintendo have as a minimum. On PC you can kind of do it manually by storing the game files in whatever medium you want. Of course if it was using a storefront with built-in DRM it's a bit difficult, but nothing is stopping you otherwise. That presumes that you download the game first of course. During the tail end of the PS3/360 life cycle I switched pretty much completely over to digital. It saved me space, and more and more often it saved me money because I could buy a lot more games on sale than would normally be seen with physical disc copies. When I have friends who asked why I switched or told me they still used discs I scoffed at them and called them dumb since you still had to install a bunch of data on it anyway. While I do still find that to be true for a lot of games that rely heavily on online modes if you are going to be playing online a majority of your time I think it's a valid criticism. When it comes to more single player focused games where a fresh install is basically all you need to enjoy the full game plus or minus a few bugs here or there that could be alleviated by a newer update I will fully stand by physical media. It's incredibly important and as the previous generations of consoles physical media is slowly being bought up more and more and the prices for those discs, cases, what have you climb year after year it has become undeniable for someone who's digital library on the PS4/5 has almost reached about 500 games that on more than a few purchases, I wish I had the physical copy. I won't always have internet. PlayStation won't always be around, or allow us to play older games on the PS6-7-8s etc. Game Pass won't have all the same games this month as it will the next and the gaming companies know this and continue to throttle us, deceive us and try to manipulate us into thinking that physical media is a thing of the past because that means that we as consumers own what we purchased and they can't on a whim rip it away. There will be a period in all of our lives going forward when we can't play the digital games or at least purchase the ones on the stores because like the PS3/360 generations those storefronts are closing orphaning many games that those companies aren't likely to port onto newer consoles deriding emulation the whole way. We wouldn't have to emulate if they would just do a better job at game preservation. I'd happily pay over and over again for my favorite childhood games on newer hardware because I am a sucker. That may just be me but at least we would have them available. Remember when the big studios said that digital media would likely stay about 10 dollars cheaper since they don't have to pay for discs to be printed? That didn't last very long. Why am I paying the same price and not even getting something I can proudly display on a shelf that I don't have room for? Remember when we had demo discs? We wouldn't have had to worry about Konami taking P.T. from us if we still had those around.

Thank you for the video, this is basically my point on digital vs physical. Digital can be convenient when the situation is perfect for it, aka i can just go to steam, type the name of the game in the search bar, install it and play it. But there are also times when my power goes out and all of a sudden i no longer have access to these games, sure the locally installed ones i can play but i don't have all 1000+ games installed on my hard drive so the fact that i can just go to my shelf and grab a physical disk off it is very much needed at times. Also fun fact, game platforms can and will permanently ban and delete your entire account if they deem is necessary to ban you, for any reason because its their platform. All those hundreds to thousands you paid on those digital games, gone. Only thing stopping you from playing a physical game is your console dying, your disk disintegrating after a few decades, or a house fire. 🙄 There are also the games that were just removed from their respective devs due to licensing issues. Mistover is a good example of this, the game is now gone everywhere, you can't buy it. But i own a copy of it so i can play it whenever i want. Not to meantion the digital only consoles becoming glorified bricks after their stores close down. All in all and the TLDR is: Even if you don't like physical, its something that should exist, otherwise game preservation can go from scrounging a collection for a few thousand dollars, to the game never being available to play legally because nintendo, sony, or microsoft randomly decides that they don't want to pay for server space.

Some physical games still require additional downloads via online. It’s really dumb, but after moving we put in the disk into the PS4 and it wouldn’t let us play it saying it needed additional things that needed to be downloaded and since we didn’t have any internet at that point in time we were forced to play another game. Edit: we could technically “play” the game, but the only thing that got downloaded on the disk itself was the menu and the online stuff. All the single player stuff wasn’t on the disk itself.

I always enjoyed the thrill of going down to my local video games store and using my hard-earned cash to buy games physically. As time went on however, I slowly switched to digital, not that I wanted to, it was due to the fact that: 1. My gaming laptop doesn’t have a rom drive 2. I found it difficult to purchase DLC for games I already have because of the fact I couldn’t buy it physically, hence the switch to steam 3. Some games I wanted, I couldn’t get physically (e.g. undertale, Trainz railroad simulator 2019, etc.) because of the lack of availability. I’m very glad that I switched to pc from PS4 when I did, too, because I wasn’t willing to hand over my money to Sony.

I've always been about physical media. As convenient as digital can be, having the disc is great. Tried my hand at emulation for the first time when Rockstar did the PS4/Switch re-release of RDR instead of a PC port, and I have been having so much fun emulating my binder of Xbox 360 games. I absolutely hate these all digital consoles. Even if you don't feel like playing games from the drive, you can at least use the thing to watch UHD Blu-Rays.

What if instead of using disks we switch to another form of physical media? Like USB drives/pendrives. They could sell the physical copy, but instead of putting it in a slower bigger cd which takes more space, they could make a small pendrive with the games logo & stuff to sell that as a physical copy. Not only would it take less space & resources but it'll probably make installing games a lot faster too.

Fully agree with you, and the same has happened bad with movies/shows lately too. People are getting sick of having things removed and censored on shows put on streaming. People are, slowly, understanding even at my workplace why physical is needed - so companies can't edit out history they don't like. Know whats happened with that? More people say ARRGH MATEY and drop sub services. I've been buying a lot of shows/movies lately due to this and backing them up myself. So I KNOW I'll have it, unmolested and the best quality possible. Same with games. When physical isn't an option NOR a digital copy (ala Steam or GOG) that allows you to download offline installers and pick what patch(s).. sales will tank and they will shift back. Digital, rental only won't last long at all. It only somewhat 'works' now cause people have the easy option for the most part, of getting a disc.. when that option is gone? Shit will hit the fan in some way. Whether thats people hacking/distributing or something else.

If Netflix taught us anything its that the streaming model is flawed and doesn't work. Sure it might get you some short term income but given enough time the market gets saturated and customers start to reject paying 5 different companies a monthly subscription to watch the same content they used to get in one package. Also emulation is going to be a big factor in preservation in the future, both MS & Sony have built their last 2 generation consoles so that they're effectively unrepairable. Multiple critical components are all tied together and locked to the console ID meaning that, in 20 years when PS5 BD driver start failing there is literally nothing anyone can do to fix them.

@@Ir-jq5kb And if you understood anything about business you'd know that that was a bad thing. See turns out having a theatrical release, a retail release then multiple distribution licenses on multiple different networks is much more profitable than having a theatrical release followed by dumping it on your own platform that you are paying the running cost for. Instead of selling the same movie 4, 5 or even 6 times they sell it once then make little (if anything) back after that because they are running the servers that are distributing the thing. I'll actually give you that in the case of NetFlix its actually not that big of a deal, they had no significant market presence before streaming but in the case of trad media the NetFlix business model is incredibly damaging and all the big trad media names that threw everything into streaming when it was hot shit are now realising they threw the baby out with the bathwater.

I hate it, they always try these underhanded things. We all know they actually just want digital only so they have full control of you having access to a game at all. I swear in 30 years gaming is going to be for the 1% only and it will just be a dick measuring contest to see who can spend the most money to show off how rich they are. You'll have to pay $80 a day to rent the game and then $20 to do basic things like reloading but it'll have some log that other players can see that shows how much you've spent.
@killerwakka1
@killerwakka1 Жыл бұрын
I also think you should be able to have physical copies of your installed games and be allowed to store them away on external drives. I can give you a bit more context about why some games are not fully on disks. The reason is simple the disks need to be produced months ahead of the actual release of the game so they can be printed and shiped to the stores. This is a timeframe of like 5 months where the developers can not work on the game. Now the companies could send those developers to work on the next games but if after the actual release problems arise then they need these developers back but they worked for a long time not on these project and would have a really hard time to fix stuff. So what companies nowadays do is to use these 5 months to buxfix and polish the game internaly. That is why you see these 40GB day one patches

To be fair, Microsoft is the only one out of the big three who is actively participating in conserving older games by providing backward compatibility for almost all of the games released on every XBOX consoles. Although the news of them shutting the store is worrisome, they have said that they are working on some alternatives. Hopefully, it won't be anything inconvenient or some predatory business model just to suck as much money as they can out of consumers for years-old games like how Nintendo is doing with their services.

@Goldfire345 Жыл бұрын
Except that's not preservation because the backwards compatability still requires you to connect to their server to download the backwards compatible emulated version you CAN'T just put in your own original Xbox or 360 disk have the console read it and let you play it

@neelmaniyadav7216 Жыл бұрын
@@Goldfire345 agreed and I'm no tech expert, but correct me if I'm wrong. It's because of the architectural difference between different consoles, right? So one way or the other they HAD to implement some kind of emulation to run those older games since Series X isn't built with the hardware and software necessary to run them natively. I partially agree with the statement that it isn't game preservation at it's purest, but they're still offering you to play older games at a cheap price (or free if you already own a copy of the game) which is still a lot more (and better) than what the other consoles are offering at the time. The most recent example includes the RDR1 port for which other console owners had to pay $50 for a decade-old game. I don't support XBOX or any other console manufacturers for that matter, I don't even own a console. But in hindsight, XBOX's backward compatibility feature seems solid to me.
@Goldfire345
@Goldfire345 Жыл бұрын
@neelmaniyadav7216 to answer the first point as i understand it if they're using emulation the archetectural differences between consoles is already taken are of. fan emulators of older consoels literally let you put your disk or cart in to the computer if you have the hardware that can read them, and the emulator will read it (a disc drive for ps1 games and a periferal for carts for cart based consoles for example) directly and load the game or in the case of ps3 and xbox 360 emulators install the game so you can play it. so i don't really know what their excuse is .

@@neelmaniyadav7216 for the second point its pretty much no different from switch online in my eyes its still tied to the companies servers and once those go down the backwards compatability or retro game service they offer goes with it. if this backwards comptible emulator was software that was locally on the console that would be a better solution

In fact, that’s already the case for a lot of games because of DRM (digital rights management). For those that don’t know, DRMs is a component of online games that make so that you never buy actual games but licensing rights to play them and all the Xbox store, the PlayStation store and Steam are DRM platforms (not all of them are, CDPR’s GOG is not).

Microsoft has been a danger to the video games industry since the release of the original Xbox! They incentivized developers to shoe-horn PC games onto their non-upgradable gated garden saddled with a recurring fee for multiplayer access. They ushered in the end of community-created maps, replacing them with “Map packs.” They gave us MTX and day-one DLC. The paved the way for “Season Passes” and “Day 0” patches. Microsoft has caused irreparable damage to this industry and I fear we’re well past the point of no return. Most modern games are garbage. We now have “services” instead well-crafted gaming experiences. We have “Cinematic experiences” instead of FUN experiences. This is why I only play emulated games now. Microsoft and modern publishers can keep their crap “services.” None of their games are enjoyable anyways.

I think the main problem we face is that the logistics and expenses of physical distribution is a hinderance to the big gaming corporations. Back when I worked for corporate I understood that physical media is on its last legs not solely because its more comfortable for the end user to just DL games to a drive, but because corporate is deliberately pushing for physical to go away because printing paper, manufactoring boxes, renting warehouses, transportation, and dealing with middle men is not good business when they can sell you the game with none of those added costs at the same price. You'd think that trimming all that fat would make games substantially cheaper but, fck that.
