Valve doesn't care where people buy games as long as it's their storefront. So an Xbox that has a steam launcher means more eyes into their ecosystem. I think this is the way forward for a future Xbox. It's a sure fire way to keep their current base in their own ecosystem and with the versatility of just launching steam gives people more options for games. The losers in this are SIE. Reasons are obvious. There isn't absolutely any reason anyone can say Xbox has no games. It would be a PC alliance. Anyone that has a current library with steam would be able to bring their library to the living room again. This is Tremendous way for Xbox to stay relevant. Also enticing for PC fans that miss the console comfortability of couch gaming.

My question about Xbox is if they did make an open OS for Xbox and allowed other companies to use it, how would developers know what specs they needed to create their games to? Would they create them to work with the Current Gen Xbox console and then have a patch or something that unlocked them to run on other systems using different configurations? Would they just use PC games (like steam) and convince developers to develop an Xbox optimized mode (much like the Steam Deck)? Would the other systems be able to download and run games natively or will they be locked to the cloud/streaming versions? I am honestly curious to see where they go with this idea, and how they implement it if it end up becoming a reality.
@jameslwjtoler2 күн бұрын
Exactly like they develop them for PC. No two machines are the same, so they would just have to operate with some kind of minimum specs in mind. It would potentially make things tricky, but it's not like the developers and the manufacturers aren't in constant communication with one another. I mean, look at The Witcher 4 reveal. That thing was running on an "unannounced Nvidia GPU." What I can guess is that they would guarantee compatibility with first-party hardware but would not guarantee game compatibility with third-party systems. That's the only way they could do it and not end up getting people frustrated about their game not working properly on third-party hardware.

This concept is nothing new people. This has been in the cards since the beginning of this generation. The hints have been there the whole time. I've been talking about it since the beginning of this gen, and both PS and Xbox fanbois can do nothing but call me names, leave laugh emojis, and tell me how fuckin stupid I am for even suggesting it. It's going to happen because it simply makes sense. Where did MS lose? Hardware sales. Too few quality games. Console feature support from 3rd party and perceived failure on the power narrative. ALL of this is addressed by killing off the traditional console and console API's and features. As I describe all of this, remember this, MS doesn't give a shit where you play the games. The 'Xbox PC' and handheld will both be based on PC arch, API's and drivers. Therefore, it isn't a traditional console. Therefore, it won't be in direct competition for sales against any traditional console. And really, the PS will be the only traditional set top console left. The hardware sales war goes out the window. MS has so many games coming out the next couple of years, they are going to have to delay games that are already finished just so they don't crowd each other. There are lots of great IP's and games coming for Xbox and it is just beginning with 2024. The lack of games argument goes out a second story window. MS won't have to worry about devs ignoring console features anymore, because there won't be console versions of games in the future. They will all basically be PC games built on PC API's and drivers. If devs take advantage of features on PC, it will be present in Xbox games by default. They won't be able to favor the PS anymore because there will only be PS and PC versions of games, unless they also do a Switch version. Xbox API will be dead. Good riddance. The power narrative will always and forever favor Xbox devices in the future because, although they will be more expensive than a traditional console, they will be based on stronger PC hardware. If you want a cheaper option you can go with the handheld or a mid performance, traditional console (PS) experience. PS will never have an image quality or performance advantage in the future. There may be some mid range Xbox PC devices for cost effectiveness, but the fastest devices will always be faster than any traditional console. 'Xbox PC' devices may include the Xbox API for back compat. They will certainly by default play the PC versions of games, and will most likely sideload EPIC, Steam, and probably EA and Ubi as well at some point. Just wait until the hardcore PS fanbois see you playing Uncharted and God of War (Steam) on your Xbox device. The console wars are truly over after this generation, and I wouldn't be surprised if sometime in the future Sony follows in these footsteps. For all the Xbox fanbois threatening to stop playing Xbox games if you can't buy an Xbox console anymore, no you won't. You aren't fooling anyone. You'll either buy one of these Xbox devices in the future, or you will buy a PS6. Either way, EVERYONE wins. You'll have a console that plays PS and Xbox games, because I can almost guarantee at this point that pretty much every Xbox game is going to PS in the future. This whole scenario described above is exactly why. It makes it so MS don't even have to manufacture a traditional console anymore. PS and Xbox gamers win. MS wins staggeringly big, and even Sony wins. There are no downsides to this. It is such a good plan that Xbox and PS users won't even really have anything to argue about anymore. Nah, I guess that would be a cold day in hell.

While Steam doesn't offer affiliate programs and is reluctant of working with 3rd party companies, they could potentially form a partnership of some kind if the agreement benefited both parties. This is quite common. Xbox does have a healthy fanbase and 30M additional eyeballs could be very lucrative for both companies considering they do have a very similar ethos of "game anywhere". Steam has always been friendly with MS, and I honestly can't think of a better partnership. I do believe MS was interested in acquiring Steam at some point mainly to test the waters, but the time wasn't right at the time for either parties. Xbox has a massive development house that could help get Valve's gaming division in order as well. Anything is possible.

What your kinda describing (and what would make a lot of sense) is Xbox being a hybrid pc/console. I 100 percent could see them selling a “box” that hooks up to a tv and functions like a console just as easily as it hooks up to a monitor and supports a mouse/keyboard and does normal desktop PC functions. This would eliminate the barrier to entry of PC gaming many have of being overwhelmed by high prices various technical specs and/or the need to build your own machine. If I was in the market for a new computer and I had the option of buying an Xbox pc that was fully capable of all things I’d need a computer to do and functioned like a gaming console on top of that… I wouldn’t think twice. The strategy wouldn’t be dissimilar to the ps2 being an affordable dvd player.

@@richardmargerison1744 I think many people who play on PC have had bad experiences with Windows including me with Win 10 and Win 11 that's also why i bought a Steam Deck OLED instead of an ROG Ally for example. I was even thinking of going for the new SteamOS on my main rig when it releases officially so i can get away from Windows. There are multiple reasons for this but there are also some against it since i'm a video editor and changing over to Linux would mean i can't use my current video-editing programm on the new OS which would be a pain since i would need to get used to a new one. It would be impossible to cover it all with just one comment without overwhelming someone with information but if i had to choose any device with an OS that gives me the best experience for playing games then it would be SteamOS since i already experienced it with my Steam Deck. But yeah there is a reason why Windows is still way more popular than Linux and the drawbacks of changing over to Linux is too great for most or it would just simply pull them out of their comfort zone but to create positive change we sometimes need to take the blow and some people are willing to do that to create a more positive environment for themselves.

My only real interest in Microsoft is game pass, which I can already access on my desktop. Having access to Steam on my television is what I'd be interested in primarily. Honestly, I have been very happy with Console as it allows me to lounge around while playing. I own every platform and while I enjoy the graphics of my 3080 it is not a must due to the PC being so big and therefore stuck in my study. Microsoft understands their customers. Myself at 38 is grounded in the console world but my ten year old son is the future of their brand and he is all about PC and handheld mobile gaming. This shift is happening naturally and Xbox understands that better than their competition. I sort of expect the interest in consoles to last the retiring Generation Y. Our children however have already chosen their way to play and that is everything from a iPad, iPhone, Handled to the latest PC.

I don't see Microsoft allowing *any* third party stores on their console(s), even Steam, for one simple reason: they don't get a 30% cut of any game sold on those stores. @mikekennedy457429 минут бұрын
Problem with this Xbox PC idea, Jay, is that games are cheaper on Steam. A triple A game on Steam is around £10 cheaper than on the Xbox when first released, and the sales are better on Steam too. So I remain uncertain how Microsoft think they will sell more copies of their games on the Xbox Store front, if those same games are also available on Steam. Not only would Microsoft be selling fewer games, but they would also be losing the 30% share that Valve will take from each sale...

While GOG would be wonderful to get the old PC games I played when I was younger. Being able to get those benefits while enjoying my curated Xbox library would be gaming bliss! If a game started as an Xbox-only game prior to this new "abandon console exclusives" strategy, then sure, it might have a small exclusivity window. But everything else is clearly aiming to release on PS5 now. And although I don't mind this strategy, I can for sure say that any interest I had in buying an Xbox is gone. I don't have a PS5 either, but if I do buy a console, there's no reason for me to choose anything other than Switch 2 or PS5 now.

@victorkelly8953 3rd party console exclusives are already pretty lame in my opinion, unless they're a smaller project & chose to start with a single platform. But companies paying big money to keep 3rd party games off other platforms? That's terrible, and really it's only Sony still doing that. MS hasn't done that since early in the XB1 days, while Nintendo just naturally gets a handful of smaller exclusives that often get brought elsewhere at a later date. The only other time it's a good thing would be if a game wouldn't have been made in the first place unless Nintendo, Sony or MS commissioned & funded it to be made (like Bayonetta 2 & 3).

They will ask Steam to give them 100% or so of the money from the games they sell on steam, and moght ask console user to pay a fee to allow steam to be used (like they do with the dev mode, but maybe with a higher fee, like 100 euro/dollars). Also they, withouth this, will sell the console not at a lose but with a (small?) margin.

I think that what is happening is, that this is reactionary to the Stem OS and improvement in linux game compatibility. Microsoft knows that they will loose big amount of people, that are pissed with current windows environment. If true, Microsoft putting PC stores on consoles is just damage control. Something they are forced to do to compete, not a genuine interest in customer satisfaction.

*"STEAM will be a part of their next consoles..."* ?? That's nonsense. So Microsoft would spend Millions of dollars developing a new XBOX, then limit their ability to make money off of games sold on it? Walled Gardens exist for a reason. YES, they are also a Games Publisher but if STEAM is on the console then you've got THOUSANDS of games and people with EXISTING libraries tied to Steam accounts so selling NEW games and/or XBox GamePass on your own Storefront becomes challenging. It's literally the worst thing they could do. At that point, why make an XBOX at all if PS6 could just supplant you and it would ALSO sell your published games? PLUS, compatibility would be a nightmare. If a Steam game doesn't launch who's fault is it? Then there's SECURITY concerns. It's a Pandoras Box I guarantee they won't open. Think about it this way... If STEAM is a draw to encourage people away from Playstation then those people will be playing Steam games, otherwise they wouldn't make that conscious choice. Are these the type of people who would be likely to get GamePass or just jump into Steam?

I think you should talk about the PlayStation Astro Bot GOTY controversy on today’s news dose. I think PlayStation payed Geoff Keighley money to put Astro Bot over Black Myth Wu Kong at the Game Awards, which in my opinion, was above average. Black Myth Wu Kong won Game of the Year at the Golden Joystick Awards. This would’ve been an underdog story with Wu Kong if they shockingly won GOTY. But with all due respect to Astro Bot, it’s not a Game of the Year material and baffling enough, not an action/adventure game considering it was nominated and it doesn’t feel like an action game. I’m glad it won family game of the year because it’s for the entire family to play and enjoy. Sony’s year has been awful (outside of video games). If it wasn’t for their pathetic business decisions, I give them a C in 2024.
@kevinlist33302 күн бұрын
The game awards is a joke but I doubt Playstation payed Geoff off. ASTROBOT won because the GOTY is chosen majority by A panel of over 100 media outlets and influencers vote on the top five games they've played, and the games with the most votes are nominated. The jury's vote accounts for 90% of the final score. Many of those jury votes didn't complete Wukong which is stupid

The Game awards have become to big and now its just a money making scheme not even about the games anymore. Sounds good for consumer, to have both steam and epic on an xbox console. But xbox needs to make money on every steam and epic purchase. Or they have to fix their pricing. Xbox is allways more expensive than steam. Example : Flint (came out yesterday) 40 euro on xbox, 20 on steam. If I have both steam and xbox on my console I guess I would buy the steam version. And epic, they have free games. But hey, sound great for us consumers 🥳

I mean Microsoft, like a rich parent, had to buy studios to Keep Xbox alive. We do not need an Xbox with Steam on it. Microsoft is an official member of Linux.
