The UV + Heat gun shot provided a fantastic perspective of the scale/size you're working on. In a previous video you used a dime, anytime you can remind us of the scale you perform these repairs on is appreciated and is awe inspiring. Also on the 2nd pad when you use the trace end of the pad, I'm like ummmmm, then you trim and use the pad side on another ripped pad - Genius. THEN a few pads later explain that using multiple pads in a row would cause a short - Holy $hit, THAT is skill and understanding of a master tradesmen.

For these consoles, a template should be produced where all the traces and pads for the HDMI socket can be replaced in one piece. Stick it on, solder it in, remove the rest, done.

Honestly not a bad idea. Wouldn't necessarily be hard to have made either. Could even have it pre-tinned. Scrape some masking off, lay it down like tape, hit it with some heat and youre done!

Heads-up on the grinding pen. Just got mine a few days back: when you put in the small grinding head, you've got to adjust it a bit in the chuck to make it run true. Don't tighten the screws too much and watch it under the microscope to see if the bit wobbles any. If it does, hold the chuck and partially rotate the bit and watch it again. Once it's running true, snug-down the set screws evenly. The thing works great.

I keep wondering how many of Alex's repairs are from his viewers who watched his videos & thought, "Looks easy enough. I can fix it myself." Then Alex gets to show them it's not as easy as it looks. LOL. Not everyone can be as good as Alex.

Alex, when you're soldering the feet for the connector on the board, you have the connector upside down, are you holding or pressing the connector on to the board from underneath? or are you letting hang freely and soldering it wherever it happens to rest?

@finalman3212 жыл бұрын
Why so many broken HDMI ports on Series X. Is it because the ports metal support legs don't protrude out the the other side of the motherboard? Therefor no extra solder support like on previous gens where the solder forms a cone shape as it clings to the protruding HDMI port support leg. Widest at the motherboard then gets smaller right up to the HDMI port support leg tip.

The zoom camera makes all the difference in the world: I have this junk Mega CD, and it freezes on the bios. Swapped all the capacitors, still freezing. I decided to reflow the main chip on the board, but the legs on the chip are so tiny, next one to another, that even a tiny amount of solder, splashed over and doesn't matter how hard I tried to see where 2 joints have solder so I can separate them, didn't work. And after many tries to remove the excess of solder, I ended up breakint 2 pads, and 1 leg, the leg broke very close to the black mass of the chip, so I gave up: I know I can try to trim the black part to reach to the copper, but it's so tiny, that I think it's worthless. The camera would be solution here...! Anyways, I bought another faulty Mega CD, swapped some boards, and now I have a working device, the other one, I'll put in the closet to work as a donor if any other part needs replacement in the future.

Can we all admit that there is enough space on the PCB to make these kind of repair much more easy for both specialized technicians, and hobbyists? The HDMI is a connector that is constantly under stress, this PCB area should be designed accordingly.

Flux helps with the transfer of heat(more surface area contacting), and probably mainly slow down or prevents oxidation of solder and copper(a thin layer over the metals that prevents solder to fuse).Oxidation is accelerated by heat. Thats what I think.
