There is a reason not to want online only games to exist, but I'm not surprised griffin doesn't see it as he's not really the type to care about this aspect. The reason is that online only games almost always get killed by their companies, essentially stealing from the people who bought the game as now their product that they paid for is broken and they don't get a refund. Selling someone a product, intentionally breaking it beyond repair and not issuing refunds is theft. But naturally griffin thinks that "just don't buy it lol" is an argument when that won't stop companies from defrauding people. And no you aren't purchasing a "temporary licence" to use the game, it is a product and should not be broken by the company for no good damn reason.

People's access to games they bought getting cut is bad. Games being unplayable without day-one patches is bad. Gamesbeing de-listed due to licensing issues is bad. Buying a collectors edition without the actual game being included is bad. Companies not fulfilling promises is bad. Companies not guaranteeing access to games you bought and not preserving them is terrible. But none of these problems are solved by having physical copies. All of these need to be solved through legislation and regulation so consumers don't get screwed over constantly. Really, having physical copies isn't even the problem. If someone wants to have a collection because they like having them, let them. Publishers should just take orders for those who want a hardcopy and only produce that number + some more as a buffer. Which would need regulation. I don't see a future for discs either way. For better and worse.

I'm not sure I agree with your take that a game being online only isn't a big deal, especially in this game's case. Redfall is confirmed to have a solo player experience, so there's no reason at all for the game to be online only. If it was a multiplayer only game, fine, whatever, but that's not the case. One of the main excuses developers will use for online only is to slow down, or mitigate exploits, and glitchers in a multiplayer game. Because if a multiplayer game is offline as well as online, for example, in a loot based rpg, someone could get specific loot through exploits, and then go online with them. The issue with this excuse is it doesn't make any sense either, because you could offer different characters or profiles for both online and offline content. Vermintide 2 is a more modern game that does that, and Phantasy Star Online, a game with Online in the actual title, did something similar as far back as the Dreamcast. The issue with PSO though, is it had the same save for both online and offline, and was rampant with cheaters. Anyway, I also think Xbox is making a big mistake by making so many online online games and features due to one major and unique feature on their console, and that's "Quick Resume". Being able to jump in and out of various single player games is amazing, especially if you are achievement hunting, or playing a game that has an initial long load time. To me, it should be a feature heavily advertised, but that's hard to point to as a major feature when you have no major 1st party games that take advantage of it well. Anyway, I don't like DreamcastGuy. I have subscribed and unsubscribed to him several times. One of the major reasons I unsubbed from him the last time was his Playstation Bias. He refused to cover Gran Turismo 7 having most of it's content only be accessible online, and the controversy around that, but was calling out other games and companies for that same thing at the time. His hypocrisy annoyed me so much. Also, Griffin, I think that was the word you were looking for instead of Ironic, is that DG is being hypocritical, and not "keeping that same energy" about Final Fantasy XIV.

I actually liked Anthem to be fair, the combat loop was fun there just wasn't enough content and since the 2.0 rework got scrapped by EA it is just a dying horse. as for physical copies of games, don't get me wrong I have a decent sized PS2 game collection but most (about 97% of it) are literally games I had growing up, it's literally my childhood collection from a time when digital games weren't really a thing and a couple that I wanted to own since I first figured out they existed (Fatal Frame 2 and 3 mainly) but massive shelves like that filled are a bit annoying unless it's literally their job since they review any game like AVGN rather than perpetuating the annoyance that is the very existence of the console wars

The conflation of physical and digital games for how they work is annoying for sure. I disagree that games should ever be online-only when they're being sold. Because time again it shows people are not really aware of what they're getting into. It's also unnecessary when these companies can release a consumer version of their server software. In fact, EA is about to do this for Knockout City, major props for that. In my opinion that's how it should be. If Microsoft cancels Sea of Thieves, they should release the server software so people can continue playing.

I watch most of what Griffin uploads and while I agree with most of what he says, I don’t necessarily agree with his take on physical games and him calling a collection the wall of virginity. All I can say in response is at least with a physical wall of virginity, you can still sell off your games and get most or at least some of the money back compared to a steam wall of virginity. Once you purchase a digital copy of a game, you better make sure it’s a game you’ll revisit quite often because if you don’t like it after a certain time, all you can do is stick a finger in your ass. Hell even NFTs, which I despise, are better in that regard than getting a digital copy of a game lol.

I get where he's coming from (I would prefer physical medium for my PC games), but also, physical media can get scratched, degrades over time, etc. I still have some physical media of games that I can no longer install because they have scratches/marks that prevent the install from completing. For those games, I've had to repurchase them on Steam, but at least now I can download them and install them. So there are plusses and minuses to both options, but I have been using digital editions for 15+ years now, with Half Life 2 being my first digital purchase. Also, depending on how old the game is on my DVD/CD, it might no longer run on current hardware. So I might have to use an emulator to run it or if the company released an updated version of the game digitally, then I get it that way. In the end, digital releases are here (whether you like it or not).

I agree with the rebuttal responses from griffin as always BUT....preservation is the way. At least we the consumer should be able to have the assets in those discs. There are many examples of old games getting played online today. As of late og xbox live is back online through another service but since older games do have the data in those discs, anyone that either owns or through emulation are able to play them online again. Everything does come to an end though...speaking about life.

I can see your point. However, digital preservation is actually easier, and s lot better than physical. Because eventually, you will have to try to keep all these things in well enough condition to work. Most games that have been released digitally is easier to keep around

@YuGod23 not quite but I never even challenged "digital" preservation in my posts. I also did mention above "emulation" which of course are roms/isos that are considered digital. All in all, physical & digital are options. I do agree though that physical media should not go on as we see more of the usual incomplete games in this discs.

Subscription services pricing falls in elastic demand most of the time. If pricing goes way up you just tend to cancel the subscription. After all you can still buy games individually and build up a library of digital titles that you actually want to play, instead of having access to hundreds of titles you dont care about. The moment gamepass starts becoming financially uninteresting people will unsubscribe and return to buying games every once in a while. This is coming from someone who knows what is to be unemployed for months on end. My only hint is: if a title kind of depends on hingy licensing deals, make an effort to buy them as soon as they go on sale, like mgs collection, hi fi rush, music games etc, if youre into that sort of thing.

I get it that it's fun to poke fun at Anthem but the game is not dead (unlike Babylon's Fall) & some people are still playing it. I return to it from time to time because I really enjoy the gameplay and the people I meet playing it come back to it for the same reason.

As someone who only buys digital, I can’t see the problem. BUT I do wish companies would give very popular titles a fresh coat of paint after a period of time. Like I crave to play MGS4 but don’t wanna go through emulation. But physical disc are just too inconvenient for my life.

i support options, not only. to go digital only, one would need even moderate internet, something that is much more problematic in smaller countries. even here in the states, it can still be a pain. in my area, i was limited to a 6mb/s download via a shoddy dsl line, up until the power company installed fiber optics on the power lines, due to president trumps nationwide broadband push.
