@@thewatlingtons6047 Because they're essentially buying third party publishers to get ahead. Mostly for their Xbox game pass which is great in the short term. Now they're going to honour current agreements to keep franchises multiplatform. Which is great. But once that expires? Will the many franchises that people were used to playing on multiple systems suddenly be exclusive to Xbox and PC? I hope not. Removing player choice would be a shame. In general I'm someone who's against games being exclusive and think console exclusivity should be thing of the past. It is cool that Microsoft have allowed their games on the Switch and PlayStation have allowed their games on the PC this generation too. I'm more in favour of that trend. If PlayStation and Nintendo started doing the same. And started buying off all of the other third party studios. It would essentially be the death of third parties. Which would be terrible for the industry. Xbox on the whole have been a lot better than PlayStation from a consumer point of view in the last few years. I've praised Xbox for their "replayability" could be better though. As well as them introducing developer mode on Xbox which has allowed Emulation without hacking. Both great for consumers. But I'm going to call out Xbox for this.

But this is a situation where Microsoft didn't want to outbid Sony for it. We all know Microsoft has way more money than Sony, how on earth did Sony outbid them for this game? Sony didn't buy the studio, so the only conclusion we can draw is that Microsoft didn't think getting this game day one was that important.

Agreed. The gaming community told publishers that exclusives were the reason they bought into a platform en masse. So, expecting Xbox to constantly sit on their heels and do nothing as a business strategy is insane. They knew if they didn't throw the gauntlet down and soon, that the video game business was going to get away from them. And so how do you give gamers what they want rapidly when games take years to develop and you're concerned you don't have enough titles at the launch of a new generation? You acquire businesses and shore up your weaknesses to prove to your audience that you're invested in them. Gaming is never going to stop expansion and is a multi-billion dollar industry. If anything, all this acquisition did was give Xbox a footing back into the gaming industry. Another generation like the Xbox One era might have been the writing on the wall - Zune style. I'm glad we at least have a competitive industry again. The problem is that many people in games media have a sizeable bias against Xbox. Some of those people work at IGN. And I've said it before and I'll say it again, it's okay to have a favorite console. We all have preferences. But at least do your reporting on the industry fairly.

Everyone demanded that Xbox develop a more powerful console after being told PlayStation 4 was superior (which it was). So they spent all their money and time doing that and then PlayStation started releasing decent games about midway through the generation and everyone told Xbox that they have no games so now they are fixing that. The arguments that they used to have about power, price, games no longer have any standing so now they have to scream monopoly. They created this monster. Xbox is just trying to provide what people demanded. Even then They can’t win.

No they don't have mental problems. The DOJ hit ms hard because they were packaging IE onto windows and making it so that you couldn't uninstall it if you wanted to. They were right to, by the way. At the time MS kept adding to windows, things like cd player, video player, the browser, etc... as they added things people stopped looking to buy those things separate. It was stifling the industry. (Yes, I know it's an over simplification) MS was not preventing anyone from using another browser. Of all the shazz they could have gone after them for, they went after them upgrading their OS and integrating browser features into it. Politicians, and the DOJ can get a wild hair up their tush and go after them, because it's a hot topic. They raised game prices to 70 a pop, blackmailed devs to enable cross play, charged an Xbox tax for 3rd party games to be released on Xbox, paid to keep huge games off of Xbox for years or forever like final fantasy and Spiderman. I don't want to hear it, Sony has been the most anti-consumer company in gaming. They were the bully for years they've used these tactics for decades. I forgot Sony shafting indie developers as well. Personally I hate all of these sort of deals because they cut off a portion of the franchise’s fanbase. I hate that Xbox gamers won’t get to play Final Fantasy 16 (at least not when PS gamers will get too) and i hate that PS gamers won’t get to play games like Elder Scrolls 6. Now I think it’s great MS is more lenient with their IPs and will release their games on Pc and is something Sony should do too but I think it’s fair to say that MS does do some crappy things too. Also I thought Sega stop making consoles because the Sega Saturn (or whatever was their last console) bomb big time and they couldn’t continued it.

I think this take misses the point. When people wanted XBox to be competitive, they wanted them to focus on creating great new IP, like Sony and Nintendo do. They wanted XBox to get Halo back on track, and start adding creative value to the industry. They wanted Microsoft to create their own Horizon, or Ghost of Tsushima, or Dreams, or Returnal, or ARMS, or Splatoon.

Sony’s community has been butt hurt for some time now. This was just the straw that broke the camels back. MS is continuing to pioneer by creating more ways for players to connect/ game more than ever and do it at an affordable cost to the consumers while also looking towards the future and gathering the tools and infrastructure they need for its real competitors Amazon, Apple, Metaverse etc. Sony on the other hand is convincing its consumers that they should be paying 70 plus dollars for their games and to pay extra to unlock next gen features on the next gen console they just bought.

The difference is Sony buys studios and Microsoft is buying publishers, which includes a handful of studios and a bunch of beloved IPs that have traditionally been on everything. With exception, Sony buys studios that were basically making exclusive PlayStation games but weren’t 1st party. Almost like a trial run, and then a welcome to the family. When looking at Microsoft’s approach, it feels more like a hostile takeover of the industry because they have the money to do so. It doesn’t feel organic, and I think it can rub people the wrong way. So far Microsoft has played nice about it, and only turning new IP exclusive, but only time will tell.

But Sony doesn’t own Street Fighter or Final Fantasy, so future titles could come to Xbox. Much like how Dead Rising 3 was an Xbox exclusive, as well as the original Titanfall. Locking a game here and there has always happened. The difference now is instead of buying the rights to a Street Fighter or a Final Fantasy, Microsoft would buy Capcom or Square-Enix, and essentially create the conversation of whether their games would ever come to a PlayStation platform again.

Early indications are that that is the plan. CoD will likely see far less frequent releases and far more support for each title after release. There’s pretty much no reason to maintain the idiotic yearly release schedule with Game Pass. I think we’re about to see a lot of dormant Activision/Blizzard IPs being revived in the coming years.

Because they never acquired a publisher with a treasure troves of IPs, only studios that they generally have a long history with. And if we are going to criticize Sony for their third party deals, we should also criticize MS for them as well because not only do they do it too but also pioneer it with games like Bioshock, Dead Rising, Mass Effect, Rise of the Tomb Raider, and more recently The medium, 12 minutes, and Stalker 2. The reason I bought an Xbox in the first place was because I knew as a company they would not fail if they were serious about being all in on gaming. I can’t tell you how many times I bought a console only for the company to stop supporting it and going out of business. Nintendo left me behind with the N64. OK, I haven't read that article, but lets be real clear. Sony wasn't shady when entering the console business. They got royally fucked by Nintendo who was afraid of losing the largest revenue stream (Carts to publishers). Once they lost control of the media the games were being published on they balked at the cd drive. Sony took that shit personally, as they should have. And they didn't need to get exclusive deals. The games couldn't be made on the carts nintendo was offering. The royalties were significantly lower. The media cost was 97% (at least) lower than Nintendo's and you were not locked into buying it only from one vendor. The ps2 was where the shade started coming into play. Lets not forget though that MS was buying up timed exclusives the entire 360 generation. NOW, Spencer stopped that process, made it clear they were no longer taking part, but you can't really blame Sony for jumping in when they saw how effective it was for the 360.

I am 100% confident that had Sony somehow been able to purchase Activision Blizzard, PC wouldn't even see CoD games from that point on. This is not comparable at all. The comparison would be if Sony Bought EA and pulled FIFA and Madden away from other consoles and made it Sony exclusive. Most of Sonys purchases are for developers who made sony exclusives anyway. They didn't buy final Fantasy - they partnered with Square-Enix for timed exclusives - Just how Microsoft did with one of those Tomb Raider games.

I think Sony just built a lot of goodwill last gen. After getting a ps5 I found there really isn't much to play at all but there's such a great library of ps4 games to dive back into. Personally I'm really not a fan of Sony's approach to pricing this gen and the continued lack of backwards compatibility. I'm really happy to see microsoft stepping up to offer more competition. At the start of this gen Sony were pretty much unrivalled and I'm glad that's changing.

@@caos024 personally I think xbox had a pretty great year. They had psychonauts 2, forza, halo and some great gamepass titles like it takes two and a ton of cool indies like sable and genesis noir. I enjoyed returnal a lot on ps5 as well as deathloop but that's more of a microsoft game at this point. I'd say xbox did a lot better overall last year but I think 2022 will be more balanced.

@@charliehustle2591 yea, I'd agree with that. I loved returnal and deathloop but the latter will be on gamepass this year anyways. There's also demon's souls but I only played a little. It feels a lot slower than the later from soft titles and it's always been my least favorite of their games. I moved onto ps4 games not long after getting the console. Really looking forward to ghostwire tokyo in a couple of months though.

Thank you for this video. It’s ridiculous how some gamers and even worse some fanboy media conveniently ignore Sony’s deals. Again I’ll say it again if the shoe were on the other foot would Sony even think about leaving the door open to keep Call of Duty on Xbox platforms. Hell no. So while you may get some casual PS gamers play COD through Gamepass you definitely would get more if you make COD exclusive. Also I agree that MS ought to abide by existing contracts. This acquisition directly effects and jeopardizes the entire industry. The fact people are trying to compare an acquisition of a studio to a publisher is ridiculous and intentionally ignorant. I’m a big PlayStation fan, but I own a a Series X, a gaming pc (3080) and a switch oled.
