XC90 - Aux / Serpentine Belt Replacement - PAS Pump and Alternator too!! 😳

My Summer road trip didn't entirely go to plan... About 400 miles from home my Serpentine belt turned to a ball of threads, and took out the PAS (Power Assisted Steering) Pump and the Alternator... This video covers the repair - entirely done with a basic emergency toolkit on a domestic driveway!
Lots of tips and tricks that are worth having in your back pocket... you never know when this could happen to you!

hi i had the same thing happen too, was the crank pully the outer ring came away from the rubber middle ring.

YES! - Exactly that happened to me with my S60! The crank pully has a rubber damper built in between the metal drive centre and the outer that carries the belt; it is quite common for them to slide off the centre which drops the belt - especially if there has been an oil leak from the rockerbox cover or crank head (both pretty common)

Excuse my ignorance but does this also drive the camshaft and do you need to ensure it is aligned to timings marks etc.?

Not ignorant at all! Bottom line, no. This belt doesn't drive the cam shaft.... but it IS driven in the same way as the belt that does. The timing belt is the one inside the black cover I removed towards the end, and that would definitely require timing to be carefully maintained - if that one snaps, it is usually game over for the engine! This one is more like the good old fan belt - like the timing belt it is driven by a big pulley on the end of the crank, but this one goes on to power the alternator, power steering pump and air con compressor rather than the camshafts. BTT

My pleasure! My recommendation is any of the d5 diesels on the p2 platform for ease of maintenance - I’ve had an S60, V70 and XC90 personally… all superb! Thanks for watching!😊
