Why is it the Minions from Despicable Me are so popular/iconic yet the LGM Aliens from Toy Story aren't as popular/iconic? I've never been a fan of the Minions at all, but even the first time I saw Despicable Me I enjoyed everything in the film except the Minions. Part of the reason why they were annoying was the fact that they only spoke in gibberish and the occasional word, but I realized after a while that they are blatant ripoffs of the LGMs from Toy Story. Think about it: The LGMs are 3 eyed green aliens with oval heads in blue jumpsuits that often speak in unisen and only say a few things. The Minions are 1 eyed yellow round creatures in blue overalls that often speak in unisen and say even fewer things. But the most annoying thing about the Minions to me is that (much like a lot of side comic relief characters in animated kids films) they are far too overused and take away from the seriousness of scenes while the LGMs are sparingly used to make a quick joke and lighten the mood (or at 1 point save the day) then move on. Finally, while there are some who argue that the Minions are far more useful as sidekicks/helpers to the main cast than the LGMs, the Minions (as shown from their spin off film) cause a lot of problems for the people they work for, meanwhile the LGM Aliens (as we saw from the Buzz Lightyear animated tv show) are actually scientists and engineers that are key to Star Command rather then a hindrance to Buzz and the other Space Rangers. Sorry I went on a rant in this comment, but I really can't stand the Minions, so it bothers me how "iconic" they became in popular culture when they are so annoying as side characters especially when compared to the LGM Aliens.

True, the Aliens are very underrated but it's just because the aliens are a side character to the TS films that don't even have close to enough screen time as other side characters. It puts them in a very uncomfortable position of getting liked by fans in comparison to the franchises bigger characters, Buzz and Woody. On the other hand, the minions are far more likable just because they are plastered on the front cover of every single Despicable Me movie and plays a big role in all the films. The spinoff is 100% based on the minions alone so you have no choice but to like them. I bet if the aliens had more screen time and had more action other than the Toy Story 3 Claw scene, they would be very iconic and well known characters
