What I could never figure out is why they went back to using conventional firearms and not the lasers they had developed in the first game. They could have just made improvements on the lasers to start off with for the second game.

There's 2 ways this can be explained. Either they lost before they could develop those weapons or that they could not obtain those resources when restarting. Most of the resources were likely confiscated by the aliens as they subjugated humanity and as we know most of the original people are dead with few exceptions. That's also why all of the team has to hide throughout the game and regain that power to use in the very end as one of the few fully offensive missions. 👍
