The reason Jon that the game starts with you losing is because it’s based on playthroughs of the first game where you, the commander lost the game completely against the elders

I really want Jon to see this, bc the canon ending to XCOM was based on player user data of the base invasion level of XCOM. The developers saw most players FAILED that mission on first playthrough, and pulled that user data into the canonical storyline. Canonically, the Commander is captured and put into a giant wargaming simulation machine we see them plugged into in the intro video here. The Commander is fed a fake reality where they won the base invasion and went on to win the war at the end of XCOM, then memory erased and run through the simulation again and again. The Commander's tactics are then analyzed and used by the aliens to wipe out the XCOM remnants and world militaries like some organic super computer. So in canon, Claire didn't use her psychic powers to defeat the Elders. Alien forces likely just killed her along with every other member of the original XCOM team once the Commander's brain was plugged in and used to wipe them out 😢

In it your own soldiers get altered and gene modded and you get to incorporate robotic MEC units into your forces. Very much like the ADVENT peacekeeping forces we see in 2. And you are fighting against a new human enemy. EXALT?...or a simulated version of the remnants of XCOM/the resistance

@@DouglasHollingsworth1 In fairness to most players; Operation Ashes and Temples is pretty mean if you aren't aware of the rules that dictate which soldiers you'll get on the mission, in what order, and with what equipment. There's nowhere else in the game where being all neat and tidy and putting your toys away between missions so they'll be easy to find sticks you with nothing but basic-level equipment. I'm 100% not at all bitter. Definitely.

Jon! Super useful tip, holding alt when choosing where to move shows you which enemies that unit will be able to hit and if it's a flank. For figuring out where a flank is at a glance, it's just based on the grid system. Same X or Y axis as the enemy without cover between you means it's a flank. Anything less isn't. I'm so excited for this series, and getting your best soldier killed in baby's first fight is an amazing start!

A decent tip, even if you are planning on making two movements, if you are still concealed, do them one at a time if you don't know where all the enemies are. You might inadvertently end up in someone's sight radius, but stopping between movements uncovers more map and potentially enemies, giving you an opportunity to change where you ultimately end up. Even now, I still make the mistake of running too far and exposing myself.

Been playing this for the first time recently. Even on veteran, the game never lets you get too comfortable, and seems to delight in disrupting your carefully arranged plans. It's infuriating and compelling in equal measure, and I can't put it down. You're in for a stress-filled treat.

Jon mentioned in a recent stream that in testing he spammed the cutscenes to skip etc to avoid any hints of the plot. Because XCOM 2s subtitles put like 3 sentance on the screen at once he may have left them off intentionally for the plot, so the subtitles don't ruin the following 20 seconds of plot by putting all the text on screen. Its something he could have turned on in the settings in the mission, and something he does normally do so i can only assume its for plot spoiling reasons letting him also enjoy the game.

There are a couple of keyboard shortcuts worth knowing to speed things up slightly:- Press 'R' to reload 'Y' to overwatch Backspace to end turn Also, while you're looking for somewhere to move someone, hold Alt to get a preview of which enemies you'll be able to hit from the new position, so you don't need to guess about lines of sight/flanking etc

Jon fell victim to a bit of code that was added because of one particular xcom streamer cheesing the ambush mechanic. It's called the anti-Beaglerush maneuver. The streamer Beaglerush kept leaving one of his squad out in the open to break concealment on the enemies' turn, rather than breaking it on the player's turn (thus giving a tactical advantage). Because of this, instead of scattering like normal, there is a chance for the aliens to just shoot that soldier right away.

So Jon, here are a bunch of tips that will probably make your experience with the game a good bit better: 1. See how the target markers gain essentially a copy when you look for a move? They show you what targets are visible at the point where they move to, including whether they get a flanking shots or not (cover works in a straight 90° angle usually). Edit: apparently with a vanilla setup, that is a toggable part of the UI when you hold Alt. You should be able to toggle it as a permanent option in the UI settings however. 2. Patrols have gotten a lot more clever, as you noticed. They move around a lot more, and have gotten a lot more toys, like mind-controlling corpses. However, you get a lot more toys yourself, and not all enemy abilities are as bad as they sound. For one example, patrolling groups of enemies might walk away from each other, or might walk closer towards your hidden squad, giving you a better hit chance... 3. Melee combat does not have to be triggered from close range. You can literally select a target at the end of your long movement range, sprint towards them and hack their face off. 4. There is a Rome: Total War voicepack mod that can give your soldiers the customization option to spout out general speech quotes, even some of the mad ones. Enough said. 5. Speaking of soldiers having options... even in-game the customization option of soldiers is MUCH better than it was in XCOM: Enemy Unknown. If you come across new soldiers, consider customizing them to bring in some old friends, like, say, a certain Space Roman...

Jon, remember that flanks only count if you are at 90 degrees from the enemy. Also, sectoids will always use psyonics, unless it can flank one of your soldiers, so prioritize other enemies first.

Hi Jon, really looking forward to this playthrough. In answer to your question about how did the aliens win, because you clearly remember winning the campaign in XCOM EU, as Tygen explained when he researched the chip removed from the commanders head, the aliens were using the commander to run thousands of simulated combat scenarios. So therefore, your campaign and indeed the campaigns of everyone who had played through XCOM EU did happen, but as simulations in the Commanders brain. I think this was a brilliant way for the developers to make changes to the universe whilst maintaining a sort of canonical link to XCOM EU.

Jon has fallen into the trap / blessing (depending on how you look at it, and who survives) of naming his soldiers after himself and his loved ones. While this really (and unexpectedly surprisingly) boosts your investment in the game, it's bloody heartbreaking when some you care about is turned into mincemeat by some alien bastard. Seriously, good luck, Commander. Hope you, Claire, Tabby, and Ted make it through the war to come.

Jon as I always understood the story - in xcom 1, the based defense mission split the timeline, from the great victory we experienced : xcom2 is basically what really happened, in that they beat us.

Jon, you missed the best thing - the aliens were having the commander run battle simulations in the tank, to better understand human tactics. Humanity never won. Someone with psychic power betrayed you before XCOM one even started, and in cannon you were just running scenarios in the tank.

Ah I've been waiting for this one for quite awhile. And as you can tell from the first mission, this is only the beginning of how brutal this game can get. Good Luck Commander. (your gonna need it) P.S. you forgot to turn on Subtitles.

i could've sworn u played xcom2 already but i guess it's just xcom1. xcom2 is definitely an upgrade in terms of everything but especially quality-of-life improvements

Jon’s really lucky he was able to end that mission when he did cause that truck was on fire and would have exploded the next turn and killed Jon who was standing right next to it. Also why am I not surprised that Jon got Jane Kelly killed in the first mission. Jane Kelly by the way canonically survives the events of XCOM 2 and goes on to head the Reclamation agency in XCOM Chimera Squad

You are in for a hell of a ride, Jon^^ Do yourself a favor and level up your guys a bit before you start the DLC stuff. Also: If the timers get on your nerves there's a workshop mod which disables timers. Instantly made the game way more enjoyable.

Jon needs to try the Valkyria Chronicles series some time: a mix between XCOM and third person shooter set in fantasy WW2 with a story that is actually rather good (if one can tolerate it being a bit too anime, at times).
