So it has a chance of teleporting closer and not forcing you to cross the entire map to just find out the Avatar just healed back to full health. That and the Avatar is the strongest known enemy of XCOM 2

On a related note, currently my ship has eight women at Colonel rank (I got a mod that modifies the AVATAR Project to not have passive point generation, so everything comes from alien facilities, it makes the game last much longer) and of the six remaining, one is a SPARK, and the rest are all shaken and male.

my first encounter was when i rushed to the coordinates given by skulljacking a codex. Magnetic rifles, predator armor and a couple of EXO suits all i had. I play it on commander difficulty trying it with just four soldiers. First I played it for like half an hour and it wasn't going anywhere because he always controlls one soldier with mindtrick so he regenerates all you hurt. Then I loaded it and killed him on one shot (like second or third hit) with execution.:)

Not that what you're suggesting in't a viable strategy but you'd get one snipe before it teleports to cover. Demolition is best for this since it won't trigger the teleport and it'll save you a grenade.

The best solution to the Avatar is to have all of your soldiers on overwatch covering the Codex before moving in. If you have plasma-tiered weapons and a full squad it is very likely for the Avatar to spawn directly into five waiting guns and drop like a rock.

Usually hard targets like sectopods, I just phase them out for a turn while my squad uses their multi target skills and mops the phased out hard target. I put bluescreen rounds on my grenadier since mecha enemies show only now and then until the endgame where every map has a fucking sectopod. Avatars I find bothersome but once you unleash a psionic lance, a minigun sweep, and a rapid fire to the face, i find it hard to see it stand back up and teleport

I think (based on couple already watched X Com 2 vids) they seriously need to TUNE DOWN RNG madness in this game... I saw where squad members missed YELLOW 100% shoots or scoring hit with minimal damage because AI out of the blue conduct crazy dodge... Even hacking is ruled by absolutely insane RNG rolls because i saw once how computer indicated 93% chance for success when in reality he got 35% and outcome of this BS.. almost dooming entire mission... on a legendary level.

Super bad team. Super bad play. You skulljacked the codex while the other ADVENT were still alive. It's always better to kill the enemies FIRST. When you got a soldier MC'd, you had no idea what to do. Why did the Avatar start with such low hp? Is this on easy difficulty? You also probably didn't play on Ironman, which is the only way to play this game. Your squad setup is atrocious. Is that 3 snipers? 1 Grenadier? 1 ranger, 2 support? It's just that you're super bad at the game.

You also need to learn to destroy cover. XCOM2 is all about destroying cover. Maybe on the next run when it's not on easy difficulty.
