I found myself figuratively (and a little literally) drooling as I watched this entire video. I'm almost at a loss for words but a few that pop in my head are: Jaw-dropping. Stunning. Strength. The Future. Improvement. Having sat on the machine, I'm itching to jump in the saddle and take it out on the road. Camera or no camera, I NEED to get on that bike! Honestly, Ducati danced around the moniker of "cruiser" with Diavel 1.0 and I'm so glad to hear them fully embrace the cruiser title with the X. Sure, there's no denying the crossover identity, but seating position, foot pegs, handlebars...all of this tells you that this is indeed cruiser. Great review man. I really felt like I was experiencing the ride vicariously through you. Hope it winds up in your garage somehow/some way! Ride safe brother.

I currently own a 2013 diavel cromo. I took the xdiavel out for a spin a few weeks back. I am in love. No chain, no maintenance. Cruise control? Hell yes. Fuel gauge? My biggest gripe with my diavel is now gone. 50 degree lean angles on a cruiser? Insanity. Definitely going to be my next bike.

Nicely done review, XXXDeadhead. You didn’t just regurgitate specs that I can get from Ducati's website like so many other "reviews" out there. I like the subjective analysis you gave and the rationale behind it all - that is the core of a good review. I cannot wait to give the bike a go myself. See ya in the wind.

I haven't felt the kind of passion you're experiencing from riding a new bike in over 20 years (since buying a new 1995 Ducati 900SP). XXX, you gotta buy this bike! The added safety of the Diavel is why I bought mine back in 2011. In this day and age, the old 'I had to lay it down' BS is ridiculous. ABS is a must-have for people who don't want to master braking drills. Ride modes are a must-have for people who haven't mastered throttle control on bikes with BIG power. As an experienced rider, I view it as a personal safety net when I'm not feeling 100% and want that extra buffer to get me home to my family at the end of the day. They're not late. They've just raised the bar far above the other brands. It's a luxury brand with luxury features at the price of a modestly upgraded Harley...

They are only late in the sense of; I wish the bike had come out earlier - like before I bought my bike :). The safety features on this bike are a definite pull away from your average cruiser. I love it

Test rode the S as well. loved the bike, it is a testament to where the industry is going. This is for tomorrows cruiser. Technology is up to date, abs, fuel injected and the works. All of that will be industry standard and as of this year in my country (Scotland) as of this year will require all bikes have abs over 125cc. The main issue I took with the bike was rear suspension and the handle bars. Neither of those is an issue as Ducati offers several different handle bars and will adjust suspension to the rider on purchase. I agree on the marketing. They should have been more forward with it and said, "our bike just made your Grandfather's cruiser jealous."
@XXXDeadhead8 жыл бұрын
Well - it is new so we don't know how the market will respond. So far I get the general impression that sport bike riders are like 'meh' about the bike - cruiser and naked standard riders are like 'Hell yeah! Wait how much?!' - and unfortunately, the Harley market is hard to tackle. A lot of nostalgic minimalists within that category - the whole American pride and shiny chrome appeal. This bike has a niche market, but the size of that market is unknown and undetermined. It has yet to be carved. Regardless - it is a friggin amazing bike
@XXXDeadhead8 жыл бұрын
I see the value in this bike (my own value applied), but I also see the value in getting a street triple as a second bike (to the cruiser I already own), a off road bike for the mountains around me, and that leftover $10,000 for touring amazing places and eating great foods for the next several years. I am considering this bike personally but I also consider what I would be missing out on. It is pricey.
@YEG8838 жыл бұрын
That bike looks like a LOT of fun! I don't think Ducati is late to market with this. I think they got a lot more things right that some other companies did not, that and or included technology that some others didn't. That rear tire looks killer and I've always been a sucker for a nice single sided swingarm! Those Italians know how to make good looking vehicles!

@MotoErgoSum8 жыл бұрын
Modern Bruiser. I refer to my Diavel Carbon as a Destroyer, since the Destroyer class ships basically replaced the Cruisers in the Navy. Ducati has seriously raised the bar for the cruiser class with the electronics, brakes, weight, and styling. Now the question is how many of the other manufacturers will follow suit and compete. I suspect Triumph has something up their sleeves... I may have seen what they're thinking... That's part of why I'm going to hold off on buying a new bike for a few years. Really need to compare their next big release back to back, especially if THEIR release has an Ohlins option.
@XXXDeadhead8 жыл бұрын
Yeah - it all comes down to wether this bike can snag attention - it's worth looking at, if looked at it will please most (especially in person)... But the marketing may not be enough to get people to look in the first place. It steps away from the classic cruiser in so many ways, many cruiser types will not accept that. It steps away from a sportbike as well, many from that niche won't accept that. But for everyday riding or serious adventure, this bike delivers! I could see Triumph follow suit, even Harley or Victory for that matter (as odd as that seems). I hope this bike shakes it up, more people exploring further from home is a great thing!
@MotoErgoSum8 жыл бұрын
XXXDeadhead IMO, the pricetag is what keeps most away from Ducati. They have a tendency to shoot the moon with features and a high price tag rather than offering a dead sexy bare bones model that focuses on performance and comfort without the frills. That's mostly because the frills are what Ducati thinks defines the brand when in reality most owners buy for the looks, sound, and handling. At the XDiavel S's price point it really needs Ohlins and a superb ride quality over bumps. If it were 6-8k cheaper without all the electronic add-ons I think it would sell like hotcakes.
@XXXDeadhead8 жыл бұрын
+MotoErgoSum absolutely agree - but I get it from a production perspective - all those frills on all bikes really reduces their cost, thus lowering the price. I personally think it is worth the price - but I really wish it was less expensive lol.

You could be a good salesman for Ducati for sure. only negative is that you'll have to take to the dealer for maintenance and to be serviced.
@XXXDeadhead8 жыл бұрын
Yeah - negatives are the part I didn't focus on as much. Appears to be a 7500 mile service interval, which is not bad (5k miles on my Harley) at all. I checked a local tire shop, only 3 options and an estimated tire life of 5-7k miles (versus 12k on my Harley) - I really need to figure out what I can do on my own as far as servicing.

+michael nelson I agree - Harley should have anticipated this move long ago - they have (at times) had sportster models that could perform at this level (XR1200 for example), but they are just fascinated with the big and heavy - so many bog and heavy models to choose from... almost too many! +XXXDEADHEAD MOTOVLOGS Ducati, Yamah, KTM, all have bikes that make me ask why doesn't HD have the vision to produce something that can compete with what these companies are doing? I can not think of a reason other than that HD is not interested in updating anything that may take away from that "bad ass" attitude.
@XXXDeadhead8 жыл бұрын
+1AmericanInAsia yeah I cannot agree with that... There are some great bikes in that lineup you mention. But, I rarely see any of them past 50 miles from home. I don't see them in National parks, or on epic rides across country. I'm sure it happens, but it is rare... Because they are not cruisers. They may have a few models that are designed for touring, but not an entire fleet. This is where sport bikers are near sighted, they can't see the adventure that others know so well. It goes both ways, many cruiser guys don't understand the adventure of going 90 on a blind turn.
@XXXDeadhead8 жыл бұрын
+1AmericanInAsia another way I can explain this would be: why have Rock & Roll when we have Hip-Hop, New Age, Alternative, etc... Those styles are generally more complex and capable of showing more emotional whatever's... This all goes into taste, and the variety of taste is what's best, not the limiting of it.
@UhuruFrontier8 жыл бұрын
+XXXDEADHEAD MOTOVLOGS HD has nothing but cruisers. That is all they do. That is why you will never see them produce anything that remotely looks, performs, or have the appeal of the Ducati D. I'm not saying that what HD is producing is not a nice bike, but compared to the Ducati D, HD can take some design and engineering ques from that bike. Take the HD Live Wire bike for example. That bike will never see the light of day. Even if HD decided to produce a gas model of that bike, it will be a long time coming. HD just can't see past their blinders, and it is a real shame in my opinion.

Hi everybody can you please give me some suggestions on how to verify with videotape and a go pro hero 4 silver my 1299S when it intermittently and randomly and unexpectedly stalls out? Every time i take it to the dealer they said they can't duplicate the problem and Ducati of North America video taped my bike with no problems. But my 1299s still stalls out on me in congested stop in go traffic all the time and when I feather the clutch and drive between 0 to 15 mph on the street or freeway or on the street.However I'm an amateur and I just purchased a hero 4 go pro silver camera do you have suggestions on how to mount it to the 1299S gas tank ? I'm concerned with losing the camera what type a suction mount the go pro hero 4 camera? What I should use and what can I use in case the suction loses its grip to keep the camera from damaging the motorcycle and the camera in case it falls thanks advance for everything. The dealer said prove the 1299s is stalling out with video verification because they claim everything is checking out A ok on the computer test sheet with Ducati engineers and Ducati video tape that they won't show me What would you do? Thanks in advance for everything.

Definitely a really cool bike. For me the only non Harley bike I really want is the fz-07. I hope to test ride one this season. I doubt it would make me want to trade my fxdb for it but I guess you never know. I'm still too negative in equity to consider that right now. But if there was a bike I think that would be it.
@XXXDeadhead8 жыл бұрын
The FZ-07 is a great bike - I have taken its sibling for a ride and loved it - even considered buying the big bro. For me, this bike almost captures the essence of having both - except it doesn't have the broad shouldered fairings and copious real estate for hauling luggage like a Harley. Having the two bikes you love would compliment most garages well!

Heck yea! If I had the cash to buy one out right. I wouldn't think twice. But that diavel is definitely awesome. I'd love to test ride one. Perfect upgrade for ya man! I fully understand wanting to take it to the twisties instead of a pre-planned route. DUCATI BABY. :D Looks like it's pronounced 'Dee-AH-vel', like Diablo. Pronounciation guide here, in Italian; kzbin.info/www/bejne/i5u1qKtqZZZjd7M#t=175 Dude, where do we go to sell kidneys? LOL. 30k each. Dayum. It's good that you're sampling a lot of bikes...especially outside of the Harley brand. I know you love the Harleys but you don't know what you're missing or what's out there unless ya try a bunch. I would say that we don't even really know what bike best suits us until we've tried more of them. I've been doing the same thing, and I would love to try the Diavel now, even though I am sure I won't like the feet-forward thing. After trying tons of bikes, there are two bikes at the top of my list I didn't even predict would be there; the Triumph Daytona 675R for supersports and the BMW S1000RR for literbikes. ;) Who knows, this bike may change my mind about cruisers too. You have some killer brakes on that Diavel too eh? That's the sportbike side. The lean-angle on Harleys is pretty bad...great that you have some real lean-angle on the Diavel. How about the gas mileage and fuel-tank size too? The Sportster 883 (converted to 1200 for you) which has a 3.3 gallon fuel tank. The Diavel has a 4.5 gallon fuel tank (like my Ninja 300). That's a BIG plus if you like to keep momentum on long trips like I do. Even assuming the same gas mileage, the Ducati has a big advantage which gives you choices...do you slog on until you're low on gas or stop early for a break? You have that choice on the Duc. Modes are here to stay so it's good that we get used to 'em. I can hear the love in your voice man. It's your destiny.

+spacep0d I changed my pronouncing of the bike based off the dealers say. That's why I emphasized that at the beginning. Kidney's go for $30k? Perfect LOL! I have now tried about 9 bikes outside of the Harley brand, only a few have excited me in any way - But between my bike and a few other Harley models my needs were being met for touring. Touring is not something that most people seem to appreciate, they would rather have a sport bike on straight roads with no twisties or track time. Because of the twisties in my area, this bike appeals. It still has the legs for a 500-700 mile ride in one day, but does not appear to have much real estate for luggage. I can over look that if needed, but the rest of the bike must still fit my needs. The M50 brembo brakes are top notch - Most of the sport bikes I have been on to this point cannot compete. Thats the Ducati side of this bike - loads of top notch. I look at Harley lean angles the same way you would look at CC's on your bike, a ninja 300 (like what you have) will allow you to push it to the max more often, same goes with a smaller lean angle. The 'low speed excitement' of cruisers and pushing it to the edge of its performance is what excites us (if we go beyond cruising). 40 degrees is still not that ample when compared to many sport bikes, but on the real streets it is more then enough to compete with most sport bike riders, as they generally hold themselves back from using the full potential of their bikes. You are right though, this bike excites me - fully has my attention and is easily my choice for bike of the year.

Good hell you make me want this bike so bad! I sat on one haven't ridden one. I have a Monster 1200S and this thing is calling to me as well in the worst kind of way I love my monster but damn. Maybe one more year of paying on it and we will see very very jealous I wish it would have been release the same year as my Monster I may have pony'd up and bought this. Great review!

Also this bike has no room for storage (bags). So you wouldn't be able to take this long distance unless you wear a very huge back back;)
@XXXDeadhead8 жыл бұрын
There are some options that would make it possible - but would love to see something added soon as it is the only aspect that really takes away the purpose of a cruiser. This has definitely been something I have considered now that I'm thinking about getting the bike.

If you ever owned a Ducati you will never ever buy another one trust me on that one :) I owned 2 Panigale 1299 one standard and one S model and they both are very unreliable always break down and spent more time at dealerships getting fixed. The TFT screens both had lines dead pixels filled the entire screen, the engine would shut down during ride, and stuff like that. This is why we never bought the XDiavel S i know the brand all too well and they do not give a rat's ass about you they always deny there is something wrong with their bikes. The Panigale forum and other Ducati forum is filled with threads about engine shut down during ride - people have crashed their bikes and almost died because of this shit.

+XXXDEADHEAD MOTOVLOGS We could get in trouble going down these roads☺ Yes, Harley's are more maintenance and to get them to go, you've got to spent some money, then suspension and better tyres for grip. I still love my Fatbob now the upgrades are done. That Diavel would really tick all the boxes straight off the bat.

I could get it an pay monthly but, I like storage. I like own flavour on the bike, and if spending that amount I wouldn't want to change anything. A street glide etc yeah as thats a lot of bike, this I'm still unsure about. Sports bike, with the positioning of a cruiser. Ducati near me said I can take one out for a few hours, but if I do that I may be hooked lol.
@XXXDeadhead8 жыл бұрын
+Dean UK Biker Martin yeah - I can afford it but waiting until we get through some tricky risk related things with our job... Once past that were golden
@CVODean8 жыл бұрын
Exactly. If I go blow that many pennies now I'd be screwed if anything happened lol. Although I think performance wise you seem to get a lot from the diavel, I still cant justify the price. For that much I'd want a huge machine.

Where'd your Harley BIAS go? Did you notice that the bike has PLASTIC? Shame on Ducati. Motorcycle manufactures these days, I tell you!! At least Harley doesn't have ANY plastic. :)
@XXXDeadhead8 жыл бұрын
I felt more plastic on a victory then I did on this bike - much of it was machined aluminum
@bamahi71428 жыл бұрын
Just messin' with ya!
@XXXDeadhead8 жыл бұрын
+Dave Lau I did go back and tap several components to check of plastic - there definitely are a few pieces of plastic... But most of it was metal. Just letting you know that I take feedback and critique to heart :)
@bamahi71428 жыл бұрын
+XXXDEADHEAD MOTOVLOGS All bikes have plastic is what I was trying (unsuccessfully) to convey and be funny. Harley has it, Vic, whatever the name brand. I wish all bikes went with carbon fiber instead of plastic to be honest. In extreme cases, you could make the entire bike, less the motor and trans with carbon fiber. Wouldn't that be something to write about! Safe travels and happy motovlogging!
@XXXDeadhead8 жыл бұрын
+Dave Lau would guess that Ducati bikes can go about 40% carbon fiber - there are some plastics on my bike, most of which covers my turn signal light bulbs and holds wires in place. Some tubing. Not aspects of the fairings or engine covers or turn signals like on most bikes. I'm not personally a fan of plastics.
