Immortal Songs is indeed a competition show, albeit a pretty casual one. It's been going since like 2007, and is very vocals focused. Only really talented singers are brought on the show and they don't allow any lip-syncing and only very minimal backing tracks (which most performers opt out of using anyways). The usual episode premise is that it centers on an "immortal" singer, i.e. a legendary Korean artist with a much beloved discography. Current Korean artists will pick one of the legend's songs and perform a cover. Names are drawn randomly, the live studio audience votes after the first 2 performances, the winner gets to sit in a fancy red chair on the sidelines, then the next performer gets picked and the audience votes again, if the 3rd performer gets more votes then they boot the previous round's winner off the couch, and it goes on like that until the winner is crowned in the final round. Sometimes they switch it up and will go with a theme instead, like kings of high notes (this was a recent episode that Jongho from Ateez was on) or legends of hip hop, in which the contestants can pick any song that fits the theme. This ep that they did was their 2nd appearance and the legend artist was Song Changsik. From what I could gather in the ep he was sort of the Bob Dillan or Johnny Cash of South Korea through the 60s and 70s, a singer songwriter with a sort of bluesy folk style. The legend gets to watch and comment on all the performances, and he was a delightful grandpa-like figure who seemed to really love XH's performance. The song is Why Do You Call Me?, originally very simple and melancholy and well known bc it was in the soundtrack of a popular Korean movie in the 70s. Apparently the scene the song is in is a comedic chase scene, so XH picked it bc they liked the quirkiness of a kinda sad song be associated with something funny and lighthearted. They did lots of fun stuff with the rhythm and melody to make a pretty simple song into something more fun and interesting to listen to. They actually won their round with it, beating out the prev contestant who'd won like 3 rounds in a row, but sadly lost to Lee Mujin who performed last right after them. XH said this program was the one they most wanted to do for this comeback, partially bc they felt they didn't perform as well as they could have in their first appearance and wanted a redemption. Which I think they got, bc even though they didn't win it's a big deal just to be invited on this show and to win a round at all. Idol groups are a lot less common on the show, and when they're on they rarely win. I think Ateez is the only 4th gen group that's won more than once, winning 4 of their 6 appearances including their very first one, and even they didn't get on until 2 years after their debut. Considering XH only debuted 1.5 years ago, and their first appearance was right at their 1 year mark, it's actually very impressive that they've already gotten to do Immortal Songs twice and done really well both times. I recommend checking out XH's first appearance on Immortal Songs too. You can tell they were wicked nervous but they still did really well, and it's a super fun song. The legend artist that ep was Patti Kim, who's like the legend of legends for female Korean vocalists and had 3 whole episodes dedicated to her. First Korean artist to perform in a bunch of venues around the world, first one invited to perform in Japan after Korean independence, had like a 50+ year long career. She hadn't made any public appearances since her retirement to the US 10 years ago, but Immortal Songs is beloved enough to get her to come back to Korea again. The song they chose was Soul's Maternal Love, which they actually picked bc none of them are originally from Seoul but Seoul is now their home and where they all met to start living their dream so they wanted to honor it, which I think is just the sweetest thing.

Omg thank you soooo much for all the info!! I am really proud of them, they are so talented and it’s sad they lost against Lee Mujin but he is so talented as well!! I will check out their first appearance!! I knew Ateez won or participated so I will probably check their performances there as well! I am glad they got to perform where they wanted and that they were less nervous than the first time!! They are insane but I can imagine the sadness of not performing how you know you can because of nerves Can’t wait to watch the performances!! Thank you so much for watching ❤️

@@maesreacts_ Oh, you're in for a treat with Ateez's performances. Their first one was a spooky halloween-ified version of Black Cat Nero by 90s hip hop group Turbo which was the legend artist that ep. It was so popular that as a gift to fans they made a whole performance music video for it and even got the leader of Turbo to be in their video. I believe they're the only idol group of any gen to win the episode on their first appearance. Immortal Songs is on Viki, but you do need a viki pass plus subscription and they only have the most recent 50 episodes. I honestly only upgraded my viki sub to watch this show lol. Not sure it was totally worth it, but the greenroom chats with all the artists are really fun and there aren't any translations of them on youtube that i can find. The episode limit does mean that for Ateez they only have their most recent one, which was just a week or two ago, and the episode theme was honoring military and first responders. Honestly, I wasn't wild about Ateez's song choice, but as always they totally killed it with the performance and won the ep with their usual flair. You can also watch Jongho's solo appearance from a few weeks ago in the Kings Of High Notes special, which imo he should have won but his performance is still incredible.

Just a head up - stuff from It's Live doesn't need to be edited or covered, I've watched a million reactions to different groups there and all the uploads have been fine :D They covered American Idiot and The Black Parade in the Summer Camp performances this weekend, you should check the fan vids out when you can!
