We tested the Xdrive AWD of a 2016 BMW xDrive28i! WOW! We were impressed! A lot of purists were not sure about that new AWD system since the X1 is based on the Mini! We can confirm you that, ON or OFFroad, the Xdrive system is awesome!

i am impressed how smooth the electronic system manages the power between the wheels and axles here, much smoother than mechanical systems where you always need some slip and quite some gas applied to get the diffs working.

one of the best if not the best videos of car performance trying to get out of a ditch. BMW x-drive seems to be doing good in this diagonal test but I once rented a 530 xdrive in Europe and faced a problem in power transfer between front and rear axle. this test demonstrates shifting power between wheels on same drive axle. the situation I was in had my front tires in snow and rear tires on dry tarmac and not enough power was delivered to the rear tires. that wasn't an actual road condition but I was testing how it performs. try a test on rollers where one axle can't get any traction and let us see how much of the total power gets transferred to where the traction is.

A.M The BMW 530Xi is a RWD-Based AWD system. It has a transfercase at the rear of the transmission like a 4wd would have, and the T/C is engaged when rear wheel slippage is detected. Only then is the Clutch-Pack inside the T/C locked in as necessary, sending power to the front wheels while still sending power to the rear wheels with a rear bias always present because of the design of the X-Drive system in this model. The SUV's use the same X-Drive system. In fact, the BMW X3 and BMW 5-Series use the same Transmission and Transfer Case. There is also DSC & DTC to help brake the spinning wheel to transfer power where there is grip.

agree, i do not know why that guy is talking complete bullshit about bmw xdrive. the drive to the rear is direct, but complaining about not sending enought power there :D for sure an audi guy who cant swallow this :D

Not sure which system is better but this X1 has the Mini ALL4 AWD system so it seems that even this system beats most AWD systems out there. Impressive. Wonder how would the real X-Drive do? Probably better i'd guess.

+CarQuestion Seems that the XDrive is better than the 4Matic for me, the torque distribution on the merc is slower and it takes too many wheelspin .. Just can't wait for the glc and the Quattro & keep testing awd system! I love it so much :D

as long as you order the xDrive Version it makes no difference. And if the entry level Engine is enough, FWD is also sufficent because you won´t powerslide that thing either.

Digi20 Yes and no. FWD is sufficient, but then why are you paying premium for a BMW? I buy luxury cars because they ride on premium RWD platforms and drive better than a FWD-based Rav4 or CR-V.
