I remembered watching this game live in my boarding school. Nigeria was regarded as both an underdog and possible contender because they had just won the football Olympics just two years before. Kanu and Finidi George had just won the champions league with Ajax a few years back and Nigeria had a good showing in USA 1994. Amazing team.

With this team, there was a sense of confidence you have as a Nigerian even if they scored them, they will come back again. Keep in mind, the last goal Sunday oliseh scored, he did the same thing during the 98 world cup qualifiers when Nigeria played with Kenya. He scored from that set distance and seeing him do it again at the worldcup stage was phenomenon.

Not only did Nigeria advance to knockouts despite good teams in their group, they topped it (a bit lucky to in truth, especially that Spain GK howler, that doesn't happen Nigeria don't even qualify) finishing 1st in the group also meant they got to avoid France in R16....and they still got thrashed by Denmark lol (Denmark scored more vs Nigeria than they'd scored in their entire group stage despite their group having Saudi Arabia & South Africa in) while the only unbeaten team in Nigeria's group who also beat Nigeria (Paraguay) made it to extra-time vs France.

They go very tough and hard while marking, and very fast not the present super eagles that keep romancing and caressing the ball, some even afraid to slide to win the ball.
