Xenex robot can zap away germs.
Could a robot help fight the spread of infectious diseases?
It looks like something out of Star Wars, but the Xenex machine can combat some pretty nasty viruses with UV light.
The Xenex robots go to war against germs, helping to disinfect surfaces in the hospital.
The machine pulses UV-C light, which breaks up the DNA of harmful bacteria and viruses-eliminating the chance of reinfection.
Xenex can clean a room in as little as 5 minutes--making it an effective way to disinfect an area after a patient is discharged.
The robot usually runs when the room is empty. The UV-C light cannot penetrate walls, safety glasses or windows--so people outside the room are safe from the pulses.
Xenex machines are currently in place at about 250 hospitals across the United States--including a hospital in the Saint Joseph Mercy Health System in Michigan.
