Xeon E5-2697 V3 against E5-2697A V4 and Ryzen 5 5600 in 40 games

For a server built from a Dell T5810 (about a year ago), I was kind of hesitant to have an overclock running 24/7, so I went with an e5 2697A v4 and 64gb ram. Right now it's running debian linux and hosting 2 Minecraft servers, 3 low traffic webapps, and I use it as my desktop and gaming machine. It has a rx 570 8gb and an rtx 2060 12gb that either gets used for college AI projects or gpu passthrough to a vm. So far I've had no complaints with the cpu or computer. It's not as easy as quad vs. dual channel. It's the number of memory ranks.. two dual ranked modules in certain cases are faster than four single ranked modules.

Yes...I have spent some time researching before setting up my E5-2678v3 rig in 2020 (and a later upgrade to 2696v3 in early 2023). Miyconst is my reference. His Mi899 tool has been absolutely spot on when it comes to a fast and proper turbo-unlock with my Huananzhi X99TF motherboards + E5-2XXX's, in my two systems (one for the family room and the other as my home office/productivity/entertainment/gaming system). I did buy an AMD 5800X + ASUS ROG Strix B550F in mid 2024 (great deal, couldn't pass it up)...I just haven't had the motivation yet to upgrade my X99 Home office...my current system is just so damn reliable and good. My initial inclination was to upgrade in the face of Win10Pro obsolescence. However, after a crack at "upgrading" the X99 platform to Win 11 Pro (if we wish to call it an upgrade)...the X99 continues to shine. That upgrade (.iso file) was so darn easy...and the results seamless...my motivation to move swiftly to AMD has waned. We bought another apartment in Italy this past year...maybe I'll move one system south, to finally make use of that AMD material. My initial X99 home office system (my primary system) cost me about US$720 to build, back in 2020 (the X99TF motherboard and Corsair PSU were bought "new"...everything else was 2nd hand). This is an all-in cost (save for the monitor, keyboard, and mouse). Pound for pound...best money I have ever spent on a platform, ever. PS: I run the home office PC nearly 24x7. These past 4 years it's been an absolute godsend.

Hi, I really wonder about Intel Arc B580 performance on xeon chips versus ryzen chips. As it showed on recent news that card was underperforming on older cpus and mobos that doesnt support resizable bar. If that can be fixed on by just adding rebar patch on my motherboard it would be a very great addition

Thanks for the testing! Maybe, it would be worth to add the price of the cooler into your table, because 2697 v3 with TU needs 150W cooler, which is $20+, while stock AMD cooler still fits. Also, if we are talking about the whole PC, with the good GPU you can go down onoy about 15% in price with Xeons, which is sad. Now Aliexpress pricess went down, I am now thinking about replacement of my 2660 v3 withh 2690/97/98/99 v3 CPU.

You know that monty python movie, Black knight - thats the Xeon V3 :P To be honest, so long as the cost remains low, and parts are cheap, this has basically returned from covid to be a bangin bundle for bargin gaming. Also - being honest, there is a looming problem of Windows 11. So we know that without fudge - Windows 11 is a hard end for 2011 V3/4 without TMP2 and more 'stuff'. So, I have a suggestion for a test. Select a Linux Gaming distro - Nobara or similar, and perhaps do a test suite based on what gaming may be like in post Oct 25 on same or similar platforms. When I say this, its a bunch of work, so just an idea if its of interest. Barring an answer for gaming - maybe it is indeed the end come Oct 25 care of Win 11...

My one current weird take is that I can't really go on with £50 rebadged RX570s claiming to be RX580s on AliExpress even though I can't really complain and I will at some point have to choose between Intel's still not really ready GPUs at a good price and the $400 MSRP now coming down hard to some £260 4060s. Maybe one day we will get a return to a good midrange card at £150, but ... I can see I may have to wait a while yet :P I think in view of the looming Win11 madness - that Linux really is the only offer on table left for a budget build post Oct25, but ... well you can shoehorn 11 on if you disable all the security... which ... well, has questionable wisdom over! But 2011 still won't die. So there is that! ;)

I have a test rig using the Machinist RS9 motherboard with a Xeon E5 1660 V4 to test various W11/W10 solutions. I was lucky to get one of Myconst's TPM 2.0 modules for the Machinist motherboad and W11 installed fine and recognized the TPM 2.0 module. it installed Steam and I downloaded a number of games and they all played perfectly. Unfortunately the W11 24H2 update invalidated the Xeon CPU and now W11 no longer does security updates. Linux on the other hand is a lot more positive. I'm running the Pop/OS distro from System27 and I've found it to be a very stable and easy to use OS. It comes with Steam and all of the Linux/Steam Deck approved games that I have tried work perfectly on this distro. The shocker is that using Bottles which is a Wine wrapper has been an even better way to run my Steam games on Linux. Bottles has an install script for the W10/11 version of the Steam app and through it I've been able to install and run W10/11 versions of the games. For example, my library of Borderlands games downloads and runs inside a Bottle on this machine. Also, at no time have I used the command consol for anything important. I have exclusively used the Pop/OS store to download everything so far. If I was faced with hacking the W11 registry to force Windows to ignore the CPU issue or just download Pop/OS I think it's now time to make the switch.

@@PaulLemars01 I think for many people who are at least willing to fiddle on Windows - Fiddling on Linux to fettle a game playing setup is getting similar. I think it will require a mindset that accepts fettling being required, but I think its right that for basic game playing - Linux is there now. I think in kernel ring 0 anti cheat remains an issue - but, well there are always limits.

@ Actually, I flashed the dump bios saved before the brick. After the process, asprogrammer says "Done" without any errors. I tried many cmos, and also had try to run it with only cpu to see if it was smth else the problem, but nothing, always bootloop after a split second the start.

And as you said i should, i am now using 32gb in quad channel configuration (ang my gpu upgrade is going to need to wait a little bit as Brazil is undergoing a serious economical crisis) And by the way I inherited a 478 socket celeron system from my father, time to do some retro gaming. And at last, a Brazilian (1155 do ET) managed to overclock a 1660 xeon on the original Qyiida D4 motherboard with no bios mod, he used intel XTU app. Thank you so much for your time and videos, Slava Ukraini.

may i inquire about what your top X99 xeon chip would be? i have an i7 6700, some say its fine but it struggles heavily when i add VC and videos to the mix. looking to upgrade to something with way more cores for multitasking while sacrificing as little SC performance as i can (tough ask i know, looking for the middle ground). no problems with overclocking for more ghz, x99 is the only realistic platform in my budget. also wondering if you will ever retest some of your chinese motherboards incase they have gotten new BIOSes, machinist B9, RS9, and PR9 are my top picks for now but please do let me know if there are any better MATX options with a strong VRM and functioning USB3, but i dont mind something with a few quirks, point me in any other direction if something has closely matching board and chip prices for more performance,

I would go with E5-2690/97A V4 and Machinist X99-RS9 or X99-MR9A. X99 is an old platform and chasing the top chip makes little to no sense, better to pick second hand AM4/LGA1700 setup.

Yup. You are heavily CPU limited and FSR adds extra load onto the CPU.

I have a few questions. Why HT enabled on the xeons? I thought that HT enabled was worse for games and the xeons have plently of cores and it could be better for lower power consumption/temperature and more fps. Also, why are xeons running Windows 10 and the ryzen Windows 11? Any reason? I think it would be great to see what would be the best paired GPU for x99 but I think you would need considerable donations 😁😅 Best regards

I have done some tests in the past, enabling/disabling HT does not really affect the performance. In some cases you lose a few FPS in other cases you earn a few FPS, but with HT enabled you get overall better performing CPU. Windows 10 was used because with Windows 11 games like Valorant demand TPM 2.0 and X99 motherboard I used (just like most of them) does not have a TPM 2.0 module.

@@wooof8153hp overengineered the power cables to heck and back each of them can supply 175 or 275 watts and if you get an official adapter then its 100% supported. thats how people ran 1080tis with these monsters back in the day

@@wooof8153 My z440 has 700W power supply. These are high-quality units giving true declared power figures, unlike those junk consumer PSUs under $150. Each GPU line is rated at 18A which gives roughly 216W (12V*18A). I bought a good quality splitter and have put it on the 6+2 line, this way I can get up to 432W via GPU cables and 75W from PCIe slot itself. It works, but the PSU is at its capacity limit under full load and the voltage drops a bit, I definitely wouldn't recommend this as a permanent setup. WARNING: DON'T USE CHEAP CABLES - IT IS A FIRE HAZARD

You should check out the i9 12900hx bga to lga chips, they're cheap (for what they are ~160usd) and are apparently much less finnicky than their predecessors. Or perhaps the i5 12600hx which is about 100-120usd

Thanks for the info, it confirms what I already know from my subscribers. If you O.C. that i9 ES, it delivers but these boards die from O.C. and the silicone lottery is not always on your side, so, in my opinion, it's not worth the hassle, the risk is just way too high.

I bought AJginyue mobo, cpu, ram bundle off of AliExpress for $140. A b550matx, 5700x, 3200c18 2x16. It performs pretty close to my 5800x Asus b550 3200c14 pc with the 6650xt. Just it’s vrms get a lil toasty. Bios was simple once changed to English. And bios updating not hard on it either. Supports up to 5800x3d out of box.

100% right, but not only used market. CPU market is running slow lately, there are improvement but not SIGNIFICANT improvement. CPU like 5800x3d or 5700x3d (that's still on the market) are not THAT FAR from more recent AM5 CPU's. Considering that in gaming (IN GAMING), DDR5 brings basically no improvement, and considering the price that AM4 CPU's have today, the choice for cheap builds is quite clear.

You should add that AM4 CPU's have easy overclocking (memory and multiplier) on almost all of the chips (which in turn saves them money by not having to bin and SKU different grades of waffer). They just give you a guaranteed baseline and say "good luck, have at it Hoss" your results may vary. for the price, it's fine. I hate to admit it but alongsdie my xeon's are three Ryzen 5000 series. Both are truly value and dependability kings. One is an old CPU in a new motherboard and the other is an New CPU in an old motherboard. ironic.

That's true.. but overclocking is next to useless with modern CPUs. R5 5600 has almost peak performance out of the box. Sure, you can squeeze a few extra FPS out of it but the power efficiency degrades way too much.

@@Miyconst That's fair, personally I set the PBO to the motherboard spec and auto. I just mean that it is not locked down like Intel. The memory speed does make a decent difference going from say 2400 or 2666 (ryzen 1st and 2nd Gen) to 3600MHz achievable on some boards.

Смысл v4 в большем кэше и лучшем управлении потоками может проявиться на бОльших объемах данных, что определяет в том числе и детализация рендеринга, и кол-во живых объектов в кадре и многое другое, где главное -- алгоритмы самого engine игры.
