one of the reasons the GRL GVNG choreo is the way it is, is because there is a lot of sign language (ASL) in it matter of fact they even have a complete ASL version of that song out as well, not to mention their choreo's are set in way that they can dance and sing at the same time without getting winded

come on now. don’t give simon an excuse for the GRL GVNG song not matching the choreo. he could’ve given them a hard hitting dance break to show how confident and savage they are. the integration of chairs is cool, though, but overall the choreo doesn’t fit the song. this comes from a guy who loves all their songs to the core, even if NEW DANCE is very repetitive.

ASL? simon could put ASL into _any_ XG song. let that not be an excuse for the choreo not fitting the song. again, this is no knock on the girls because i believe they can only do as they are told. it’s all on simon because this is how he wanted the song+choreo to be. there is no dance break because that’s how he wanted it to be. if i remember it correctly, 2NE1’s I Am The Best doesn’t have a dance break, but simon was able to fit one in KCON, did he not? the chair integration looks cool and all, but the core choreo just doesn’t match the _feeling_ of the song - that’s all there is. there is no hate in that analysis.

remember, XG is a pop/idol group FIRST before they are a dance crew. New Dance is more of the pop side to fit into the general public. Not every MV needs a story line imo. Not every song needs to have a deep meaning. it’s all in fun. ❤

The new dance is not a dance. The new dance is confidently having fun in the moment and moving your body like no one else is watching. It's all in the lyrics. I walked in to the show and loved the beat so I started dancing. To paraphrase "Everybody is watching me have the time of my life dancing this new crazy dance. Want to have fun like me, I'll show you how". Every girl sung a version of their own "new dance". Chisa's was turn around, bend over and touch your toes it really doesn't matter as long as your steady keep your eyes on the floor. It's not a new dance, it's a state of mind. The song's premise is about having confidence in yourself, stop worrying about what others think about you, enjoy the moment and just dance your new dance like it was the greatest new dance ever created!!!!!!

I think XG has a higher bar with some people because they expect more for the potential that the girls have and for the powerful sound of their songs and their previous choreos, unfortunately they can't do an even more explosive choreo because they also need to sing 🤷🏻‍♂️ u can see idols making xgs regular choreos in a breakdance xe. Regarding the variety of songs, I love the songs and I also feel that the team behind could have been even better but in the end we all have different tastes and it doesn't make us better or worse. 🐺❤️

Dont forget. Of course they can dance hard. They show us in the MOVE video. But for their own song they have to sing Live. So they cannot go as hard as they want/can. They need breathe control to sing too ^^ Thats why they barely go all in for choreo 👌🔥 And dont forget GRL GVNG chorée is made with ASL too... so they need to keep it clear for People :)

I totally get this but I think what happens is when the songs reference a particular feeling it’s only natural to expect the movement to feel a particular way also. Even if they weren’t going as hard so they could sing the lyrics, a tougher more menacing choreo that feels as sinister and less polished would be interesting to see is what Jake is thinking if that makes sense.

And i agree GRL GVNG choreo .. i wish they hit that harder too ( especially because we know what they can do ) and they are at 5% of it in this choreo 🤣🫶 Still. it seems simon deliberately chose to put the ASL in the choreo of GRL GVNG so he can avoid giving the girls an actual hard-hitting choreo. it’s working because people are using that as an excuse for the song and choreo not matching. it’s not a shade on the girls because we know what they are capable of. if anything, i believe they themselves would’ve pushed for a MOVE #1 type of choreo if not for the chair integration being cool af.

Love watching your reactions for the honesty it brings. But this did not sit right with me. You can dislike a song/dance all you want and critique it of course. But to make fun of them the way you did was a little too much. To constantly laugh, roll your eyes, and fake self deletion to the point you aren’t even really watching/listening to the video is not a good viewing experience. I liked some of the points he brought up, but in the beginning especially when he says they haven't really gone through things, it was a bit disheartening to hear, considering just because they didn't struggle in a grungy way like others (myself including) it doesn't negate the struggles that they have gone through. They are young, and also a new-ish group, so they of course have room to grow, but we must also check our expectations because they are at the end of the day still trying to put new different things out, and we shouldn't box them into one category.

You two should watch the ASL version to understand why the choreo is the way it is in this practice version. I thought I was crazy when I saw their hand movements the first time and then I was impressed that they can pull that off while dancing and do a complete hand sign practice with no dancing. Plus doing all their head in the clouds shows in America, Kcon and a new video.

the problem with that line of thinking is giving simon a pass for giving the girls a choreo which doesn’t match the song. GRL GVNG is hard-hitting and it deserves a choreo that is just as hard-hitting (like MOVE #1). besides, ASL can be integrated into all songs they have.

The choreo definitely fits the song, from the grooves of the song, to them matching lyrically and melodically ti the song. The choreo matches the song, the only thing that is "off" about the choreo is like Jake said the explosiveness or grit that was needed to compliment the song. Once again they arent going to be able to do all that because they have to sing. Sign was already implemented in the dance, so there is 1. reason alone that they dont have to have grit in the choreo

I @@TheYearOfJerome I also saw you say, that simon couldve added sign language into any otheir other songs. Well, he didnt, he didnt want to or he just didnt feel like it. The grit not being in the dance is not simons fault nor is it the girls, they decide to priortize other influences in the song, which was a genius move. Adding sign to a song that sounds like this, would generate more traction than adding it to 'New Dance'. The choreo is definitely hard hitting, they cant be krumping all over the place, becasue at some point its going to look messy and again THEY HAVE TO SING.

If they go too hard on the execution, then the purpose of the sign language will be defeated as it won’t be delivered as clean as possible. As you are someone who honestly put me onto XG and expressed how excited you were for this group (they were your #1 next up), I think there is a better way of expressing your opinion to an audience you (basically) created. Constructive criticism and honesty are always welcomed, but this reaction comes off a bit mean. Most people come here to either enjoy a reaction with you to what may be their favorite song or to get your thoughts. you didn't like the song and that's ok. honestly first time i've heard it i was concerned about the chorus too with the repetitive nature and melody was constant. The song had so many other great parts to it that i just kept it on reapeat and now i really enjoy it. the other thing is i wonder if you're listening to it through computer or small desktop speakers? when i play it through my Hifi the song comes alive and is sonically exciting in a whole new way. anyway i still loved your reaction and hope you continue to check out XG!!!

i said at first that t.g.i.f when it first came out wasn't really my cup of tea but after my 2nd/3rd listen it grew on me and became really like catchy and now i am completely in love with it the same thing happened with new dance but a little differently i love the new dance song i like the vibes of it but the only thing the bothered me was the repetition of the pre chorus now i understand why it was repetitive and thats because it makes it very catchy i find myself singing i just learned a new dance new dance new dance almost every hour after i heard the song they dont have bad songs it just takes another listen to get into some of them.

I think this song is made for ALPHAZ and XG girls🌴🐺💖 we ALPHAZ all understand that they sing it differently from other songs. We are actually enjoying it. Definitely the audience will enjoy it more. I also believe the intersection between performer and audience makes the moment more joyful. Did you see their performance at a Korean TV show? The vibe was so different from the one you feel from the music video. XG makes music to cheer up more and more people from all over the world. At no point in this video did he say they need to have powerful moves “all the time”. We LITERALLY discuss this in the TGIF choreo that the moves there work and suit the choreo. GRL GVNG has a particular sound that Jake would like “uglier cruddier tough” choreo for at times. If you’re going to be influenced by a genre, don’t be surprised when people who made that genre have certain expectations. It’s that simple. Y’all are not watching these reactions properly at all and just run to being defensive lol

the thing is in real performance of a song, you have to tune everything down a bit in order to sing and dance at the same time, in move 1 they don't need to sing so they can go all out, in GRL GVNG they can't, there are so many other things you need to consider when doing live performances also so it's a whole different animal... if you watch their kcon LA cover of "i am the best" during their dance break with no singing they went super hard also..

I just know that it's not realistic and reasonable to expect that they can dance with the same lvl of energy and power with and w/o singing live. Also there's chair choreo added on top of that, so many different things you need to consider if performing this live and a lot of time not just performing one song during a show. can't just go all out on one song then no energy for other songs...

I thought because their clothes and music style were a reference to late 90s and early 2000s, that is why the rap and singing was the way it was because some rappers back then rapped like that. Nowadays, half of rappers aren't rapping anyway so I didn't mind it since I understood what they were going for and lived in that era as a kid. Plus, Twice really started utilizing that repetitiveness in their songs and at first, I didn't like it because GG kind of did it too back in the day. I realized why their names was Twice. JYP was smart. Keep saying the same thing and ppl have no choice but to repeat it even if they don't like it.

⁠@@tt_marieif you’ve seen their trainee days, maybe you caught the part that their ceo told them that in reality, on stage, they need to lessen the energy/sauce inorder for them to sing live. I mean, we already saw what they are capable of, but the reality of being an idol (and not a dance crew) is that they need to be balanced, the dance, rap, vocals, the fan service on promotions, contents etc. So they need to save that energy especially performing series of songs in live concerts. Yes i sometimes wish they can do all of those equally in a very high level because we expect them to, coz we’ve seen them dance really well before. But for those who also complain about them not singing well (while dancing better than any other groups), i do think they need to change their choreo during the singing parts of the members to highlight the vocal parts. OR they can practice and practice more, but idols have different schedule than us, promotions after promotions, no one can just focus in just one song.

This is so fun cause I actually found grl gvng my least favourite and new dance/tgif my most favoured/lean more into out of their new releases! Idk ig I expected more out the chorus in grl gvng it felt very anticlimactic, given i really liked the mv. However, it was nice to listen to different opinions on the same songs and I do agree with Jake about how there was no storyline, I didn’t realise that before. Perhaps it felt incomplete because the song was? Oh wellz, I’m still looking forward to their album release, can’t wait for more reactions bae keep them going!

This si so nice and constructive. I can’t believe how mad some of the comments sound. A great example of a group that give aggression and rawness well is 2ne1 and big bang. Similar energy but still clean is what XG need. I totally got what Jake was saying. I think in 3 years if they do girl gang again, they would have a whole new energy. I felt the same way when I watched some of their showcase performances. It’s very clean but when they’re doing a hard hip hop rap beat, ir still give me sweet but with powerful movement girls and not ong I can’t mess w these chicks. I think their discussion for New Dance was really good. Yeah it sounded like they shit on it, but I don't think it was totally the case. One of the things that stood out was the Baby Shark comment. That chorus is really simple, and can get a little annoying, but it's the type that will get stuck in your head; this is true. Another thing was that bit at the end, when Jake brought up his music business class. These two may not like the song as much as other, but its a song that will be around for a while, and when it gets played at weddings, despite how they may feel about it, they'll still get on the dance floor lol. At least that was my take from it, and that's fine. Good show. I enjoy Jake when he's on. See you at the next one.

Jake woke up and decided to be a hater that day, haha. A lot of criticisms are valid though; others just feel like a downward spiral from the fact that GRL GVNG MV was jarring and a bit of a letdown to them. The rest are personal tastes and (arguably) some tech issues. I agree that GRL GVNG was very aggressively toeing the line of acceptable grittiness for this group, especially removed from the hype from the mini-album announcement and the gap between it and the Shooting Star single. The MV was functionally a teaser, not just for the song itself but, paired with the very bizarre Hesono-O visuals, the general theme of the mini-album. XG is starting to head towards the trap of marketing visuals being a bit too distinct from the music itself, but by nature of kpop their choreography does its job of bridging the visual/audio gap for now. The gist of the concept is that they're outsiders - literally otherworldly in unique ways - but it doesn't stop them from enjoying themselves or others enjoying what they are doing, and if anything their "intrusion" should be considered beneficial for everyone. There is a convo to be had about JP/KR relations, the cultural osmosis, and nationalism as it relates to this concept, but thats for different kinds of commentary videos lol. Tbh it sometimes feels like they WANT to phase out their rapping - their xypher and tapes got them a lot of clout, and seeing what Maya/Cocona did for Street Woman Fighter recently, I hope they don't stop doing those separately from the main XG unit, but as we see each release on this album, I am noticing that the "rap lines" are veering more melodic and less "this is a rap line now." This isn't a complete transition (Maya in New Dance might as well have said "this is the rap line now" but the other two, Jurin and Cocona, are really straddling the vague space between singing and rapping) but seeing as each member has very distinct vocals and a clear intent on staying on the rnb end of pop, I foresee less of a blackpink vibe than some expected in their core XG releases. Jake isn't wrong here, that their rapping in their core XG releases feels a little wedged into the middle and out of element. -tbqh, however, looking at kpop gg's more recent fixation on including rappers, this is easily above average- The most worrying, to me, is the current treatment of song releases as if they are primary LP/single releases - XG has absolutely zero meat or depth in their music released so far. Nothing is emotionally challenging, vulnerable, or particularly interesting. That isn't to say its BAD or even shallow - its all done exactly what they intended to do by being FUN and with the inclusion of their choreo and unpredictability, engaging/titillating. This is really the job of singles like Shooting Star/LR, and acceptable for a mini-album, and considering how korean idol groups (especially gg, to a lesser extent boy groups nowadays) are treated as if every song release and comeback is to be judged compared to their peers (in literally competitions, usually) its not surprising XG is filling their backlog with fireworks and not campfires. Right now, most of their "meat", story, and vulnerability comes through the tertiary content like XG Days/Logs/BTS/Docuseries. They can NOT rely on those much longer, especially since that content has drastically slowed down since SS/LR was released and the Docuseries has mostly closed out the topic it was meant to be covering (the formation, selection, and training of the members) tl;dr We should have all clocked Jake as having slapped on the hater shades the second they said "do they even like each other?" because they had the audacity to have individual scenes in the MV, lmao. Thats okay though, because haters are healthy for fans and Jake still made some good points in between sips of haterade. It is interesting to me that Jake isn't the first reaction I've seen with the expectation that there is an actual dance along with "New Dance" even though that didn't occur to me at all in my first listens. It's a weird place to possibly flag culture shock tbh, since western/EU publishers would have altered the title to avoid that expectation, but I doubt the eastern demo would so easily assume this was the XG version of "Walk it out" or cupid shuffle or w/e.

so far as choreo goes, if we are gonna look at that separately, GRL GVNG was a demo for their physical capabilities, TGIF was about their versatility (and if its not at least a subtle nod to us gays then I need to have a word to whoever is responsible for letting them suddenly serve that much c-nt without reason), and without a full choreo for ND (besides some live stuff) I would guess its going to be about charisma and groove. The live stuff seems to look intentionally more relaxed and casual. Musically? Idk man, its pop singles from a group really intentionally playing around with vibes while trying to stay on concept. Its incredibly rewarding to consistent fans but yeah, Jake's response shouldn't be unexpected as its kinda jarring to a listener jumping in to hear three of their most diverse songs back to back haha.

I agree with a lot of your points and understand you don’t actually know Jake in person but he is not a “hater”, he rides for these girls and their talent but is voicing all the messy things for jokes that we all ask, do not take it to heart. We’ve ALL as fans wondered which groups actually get along so a reactor doing the same shouldn’t be seen as hating. In terms of depth I hadn’t thought of that before but I think XG could pull of a mid or slow song like destiny’s child - Girl or FLO - Losing you which is about the members coming together to heal over a relationship. That would be great.

​@@Koko3op I might have come off more hostile than I intended; I was excited to see Jake reacting on this channel today and enjoyed the video - I should have been more clear that like... I don't think Jake as a person is a hater lol. Every now and again everybody wakes up and puts on the hater shades and in 99 percent of cases its harmless if not downright good to have someone challenge you with some good quality hatin. I think ESPECIALLY because of his really interesting opinions (usually very glowing praise iirc!) of past XG stuff, I was able to examine my own opinions more critically without assuming Jake was speaking in bad faith. With all the recent XG releases I've been riding a very enjoyable high of fandom and the internet is saturating itself in positive reactions alongside me. This is good and fun! But sometimes a trustworthy voice saying "this isn't perfect at all though" is a good path down to earth EVEN IF the opinions aren't 100 percent agreed upon. After all, waking up to rock even the finest of hater shades usually ends up more like a shotgun blast than a rifle. I assure you, I like Jake! He is thoughtful, charming, and, imo especially, somewhat detached from monsoon seasons of kpop. I apologize if I did not spend more time clarifying that. If it was offensive then I double apologize because my intent was to get ahead of people trying to dump his opinions down the drain in the height of their XG fervor. Jake and You are some of my favorite people to watch react and talk about XG as I am often slow to solidify my opinions or WHY I have those opinions. Lately I've been on a real bad Jorja Smith streak and I can kinda see them doing something along the lines of Blue Lights insofar as tempo and vibe... but significantly more Spice Girls energy haha. "What would you do" by city high has been kinda done to death with covers and I really can't see a girl group leaning into that subject matter but I wouldn't be surprised if their first song with depth and oomph is at least lyrically designed similarly - a retelling of a story or conversation rather than directly connect it to themselves.

I do understand Jake somewhat. If I'm not misunderstood, Jake is a choreographer or a dancer, right? Then it's understandable if he want to see a challenging choreograph because he watch it from a dancer's view. And since from the previous video of Jake reacted to our girls, he seems to approve the girls' talent in dancing, then I understand if he want to see more from our girls and feels disappointed when he didn't get to see it. That a sign of acknowledging our girls' talent! He's dissatisfied because he wants to see more. He wants to see more because he BELIEVES our girls can do more! And I appreciate him for that. Because being recognised by someone professional in the field they had been putting all their effort in training for so long would mean the world for the girls, thank you Jake! But I, as a fan, also understand the fandom's pov too. Us fan would feels more relieve if the girls get to do less complicated and less difficult dance move. Because as an idol, they have to do live and go on tour which mean they have to dance A LOT and have little time to rest between. If their choreography are complicate then it would put too much strain on our girls' body and increase the risk of injury, something that no fan want their idol to go through. And since our girls don't do lip sync, having less complicated dance move would also help lessen a burden a lot. So in fan's pov, everything that can prevent our idol from thing that will effect their health in bad way is always more acceptable, and having less complicated choreography is one of them. But it's might not be the same for outsider though. Since they didn't follow the girls closely like us, they might forget for a moment to consider that the girls have to perform many many lives and unintentionally focus only about the level of choreography and end up feeling disappointed. Especially those who want to see more from our girls because they acknowledge our girls' talent so they believe our girls can ace it. And that's understandable. And about body language, I think different group have different standard. While I feel uncomfortable here and there watching the reaction, but maybe in Jake's standard his body languages here fall in to 'just-being-silly-and-didn't-mean-any-harm' category? And with previous video of his reaction to XG that he seems to like our girls a lot, I believe that in this video he didn't mean to disrespect the girls, just want to exaggerate his reaction a bit to joking with his friend.

What Jake said about “Grl Gvng” is actually why I didn’t like it much at first either. Only took 2 listens and seeing the choreo to grow on me. [That said, the start of the 2nd verse is a considerable mood shift that I don’t care for much. And Jurin’s choreo is… idek] I can’t believe that “TGIF” has gained ANY of my favor. After watching the MV, I texted my sisters with, “Well, XG put out the best song of the year several months ago … and now they’ve put out one of the worst.” lol I enjoy it it now tho. Choreo during the verses has a LOT to do with it.

I think he had a lot of good points. Even if I didn't necessarily agree with all of them, I could see where he was coming from. He's obviously not hating on them- it's perfectly fine to critique groups you like too. I appreciate reactions like this because it shows a variety of opinions from XG fans, like Jake. It's not interesting to watch reactors who only praise groups and don't give their real opinions because they're afraid of pissing off viewers or fans

as much as I love xg, I want to be honest about new dance. The song is generic and repetitive. Some ppl will not like how most of the song is them saying the same thing over and over again. and y’all…… THATS OKAY! I don’t think the song is meant to change the music industry. Just something fun but honestly the song could have had more to match the look of the video. I completely understand the polished grunge/grit comments. Because xg trained to be a cohesive/polished group I’m not expecting them to dance gritty or with added texture. That just not what they were trained to do. As far as the so called attitude the comments keep talking about I don’t think it’s that big of deal and wasn’t really rude. There are some parts in these song where you can tell xg is still a new group and still exploring themselves. Like mayas rap, it doesn’t feel natural. Maybe because she’s still fairly new to rap and exploring her style. If you grown up around hip hop/rap you can most likely tell when if doesn’t feel natural coming from the artist and I think that’s what was being said in the video.

I get what he is talking about with the gg mv, them not having the appropriate personality to "incorporate" the song too, and i did'nt like new dance either, is pretty much repetitive and boring, BUUUUUUT the thing is: about understanding the intention too. Girl Gang is a 1 minute long video, what i get seeing it is that they just wanted to show something interesting and diferent, there´s no time to have a story line or smth bc don´t think it was the intention anyway. The choreo have a lot of details, they're doing crazy pictures, dancing with chairs, so if they execute the moves too strongly they can easily loose balance and mess the choreo. Also facial expressions have a big role when it comes to puting on a character and personality to the perfomance and we can´t even see them close so it is hard to analise that bc the most important thing here is being clean and able to do everything without messing up. New dance is a song for the summer, but here i agree with him more, it's too simple and kinda silly, but again, i think the intention was to go viral with the tik tok dancing challenges... (what i think is soooo annoying in kpop these days). IDK, i think he was maybe just too literal, he could give them a credit and try to undestand a little bit the intentions behind everything.
