How medal event is judged:
1 heat of 16 athletes competing with two :45 second runs each. Best run counts, scored 1-100. If an athlete falls during their run, the clock buzzer will sound and the run is over. Top 8 athletes from the elimination will advance to the final. Judges will score competitors throughout the contest.

To me it feels like the 1260° from Marc-André Tarte at Air & Style 2002 initiated the new era of tricks, soon followed by the double, tripple, quad corks and now we have the helicopter spins lol, but they're executed way better than I would've imagined if someone had told me this 10+ years ago.

Yeah I loved the format when it was frontside, backside and style. Flip might be cool too. I do kind of like the playoffs idea, but unfortunately it just incentivizes people to do their exact best trick every time and you no longer have to challenge yourself by spinning in a direction you're not good at.

Not sure why you never thought you'd say it, it's the correct opinion. Corks are sick and flips are infinitely harder and better than spins. Luckily the judges have seemed to take note: Scotty James won men's snonwboard pipe with a triple cork despite not spinning as much as his competitors, and Anna Gasser won women's snowboard big air with a triple cork 12 even though the other two on the podium did 14s.

I remember when X Games first started doing Big Air first snowboarding and some of the first tricks we're back side 720s and it's normal to do 6 full rotations. The progression is going to get to a point where if you can't do 8 Spins or a quadruple cork then you're not winning gold

While I do think this format encourages repeating the same trick over and over, I think the pro is that these riders were really able to lock in their one trick. Way less falls than last year and also arguably much cooler tricks too. I mean the top five or six all had above a 92!

Agreed, I like both formats but I think this provided us the "biggest" tricks possible. I also feel everyone who want more style less spins but ultimately big air is about hucking your body into the biggest of whatever you can do and stomping the landing and this comp was one of the best within the first runs of the playoffs lol insanity. Love me some slope STYLE for this reason, it's my favorite comp always has been. But big air reminds me of the Cool Borders 4 Japan big air map and doing a 2160 as a kid laughing at how ridiculous it seemed; and yet, here we are!

I can’t deny the rotations, particularly that double tail grab, absolutely wild stuff…but man backside rodeos are just the coolest looking tricks. Can’t wait till we light up that branch of the snowboard trick tree and just start doing like quad 18 backside rodeos as if a double 16 or whatever that guy was going for isn’t terrifying enough hahaha. We gotta be hitting the ceiling for spins here soon I’d think though right? Like short of making the jump bigger, how many more rotations can they pull out? Another 360 at most? At some point the momentum is just going to be too much, bro already looks like a helicopter 😂
