Simon is right in the creamy acorn bit: gnomes are real because you're telling me that all the bronze age people in Europe, all with very little contact between each other, can some how come up with the exact same mythical creature, right down to the complex gift giving rituals? If they made it up you'd expect a bit more regional variation than there is because of the Chinese whispers effect.
