It's the same in England - so many shops closed & only service industries still open. And at one time our towns were bustling with people & independant shops.

Osaka has many bustling shopping streets, but some are becoming deserted. Large supermarkets and shopping malls are more popular.

What can i say? so very very sad. When i visited Japan for the first time in 1985 i stayed near Osaka and was amazed by the hustle and bustle and incredible liveliness of Japan's shopping streets. People everywhere, businesses so busy and and the economy growing so fast. Today these wonderful shoutengai are now just a sad collection of shuttered businesses. I cannot decide which is sadder; Almost dead shoutengai or the thousands of closed shougakkou and chuugakkou in Mitra-san's videos of countryside villages. Wishing Mitra-san a happy Oshougastu and hoping for more interesting ones in the future.

As shopping districts decline, more and more people are shopping at new supermarkets. If the area becomes even more depopulated, those supermarkets may also close.
