Thank you for this video! Great overview of the game strategy and why it's different from international chess.

It is important to point out at 24:42 that the move is "cannon pinning five pieces" since after red cannon taking the black pawn, the black elephant, the horse, the king and two advisors can not move anymore.

Another thing I notice, playing a few games of xianqi, is how the pawns make the game completely different. Philidor said pawns are the soul of chess, but they just aren't as powerful in Xianqi, at least in the opening.

Yes! This makes lots of difference

Pawns in Western Chess can protect each other, which makes a chain structure throughout the entire board and it also is an easy way to synergize pieces together. The good thing about this is that a large part of the game is dedicated to creating walls and fortresses with this setup. And it's also a bad thing since the game most often becomes very passive and ends up in a lot of draws. In Xiangqi, the pawns move up and are all dynamic attacking pieces. It is also necessary for unblocking paths. It is such a powerful piece in the endgame that it does not need to promote. Because there is no piece that moves diagonally like bishops, you can see how solid pawns are in many positions, when a pawn gets near a piece the piece usually has to jump away instead of taking back (with the only exception being the chariot)

Xiangqi is more aggressive than chess. So many counter-attacks, pins and skewers, and traps. Everything. It looks like much more combination than in chess. In chess position can be more static, all defended by pawns, here one needs to look way ahead to see all counter-attack combinations.

Xiang qi is extremly tactical form of chess compared to western chess that is more strategic … in xiangqi needs more imagination and creativity than learning the different strategies … shogi is the best all in my opinion

I think one of the biggest obstacles to many people interested in xiangqi is that there is no universal consistent notation like the algebraic notation with international chess. This is also a problem with Go/Baduk. Often many manuals have diagrams but among the Chinese, Korean, and Japanese training literature there is no consistent use of notation. Neither is there an established set of international terminology.
@XiangqiChineseChess Жыл бұрын
Actually Xiangqi does have universal consistent notation, will publish a video for it later!

The average slower pieces in xianqi don't lend themselves to the same kind of tactical depth. Chess pieces are far more abstract and dynamic in their movement. I think xianqi is a bit more like checkers in this respect. Tactics are still important but in chess, there is alot more tactical tension and dynamism on the board at any given time, because every pieces is only a turn or two away from being captured by most of the pieces on the board. In xianqi, the only pieces that can easily do this are the chariot and cannon.

The cannons, the slower pawns, the ministers only moving two spaces all make the openings different from regular chess.
@XiangqiChineseChess Жыл бұрын
Edited: True, all those make for a different game from chess. We may tackle those subtleties and others in a later video. The main principle of using your strongest pieces early may sound odd to chess players, which is why Joep covered that specific one here.

What was the explanation why you can’t take the central pawn as red in the same side cannon again?
@ItsTheWhale Жыл бұрын
Wasting moves. Black will be able to develop more pieces, and in Xiangqi, positioning is just as important as material.
