Let’s have a look at the Mi Band 4: is it the best fitness tracker in the world? Is it the best Mi Band yet! Join me and let’s find the answers!
I Usually show you the process of unboxing - as it demonstrates a company’s attitude towards presenting a product. We live in a world ruled by marketing, and we’ve often seen how shiny packages can sell poor devices. I had the feeling I am unboxing one of the many Chinese lower grade devices - but let’s say we can live with that. Inside - there’s the band, some papers, and the charging dock.
The most obvious difference to the previous generations, and the biggest update that we immediately notice is the display - it is now color AMOLED screen with the size of 0.95 - we have considerably larger screen surface if we compare to older generations - but the band keeps its discrete shape and still looks gentle and nice on the wrist.
Other than that - it is likely powered by a new generation of Dialog Semiconductor-manufactured SoC - which is based on the ARM technology and very power efficient. Comes with Bluetooth 5.0, 135mah battery, PPG heart-rate sensor, and waterproofness up to 50 meters!
On paper all these specs are remarkable. The display is also fantastic - promising 24bit color depth, as well as brightness up to 400nits, which can compete with the brightness on flagship smartphone displays from a few years ago.
Considering the hardware - there are two thing that some of the tech-fans may miss - no embedded GPS - which seems to be avoided in favor of better battery life, and no NFC - and although there is an NFC version of the Mi Band .
Let’s shift the attention to the software, where we can notice a bunch of improvements as well.
There is one main capacitive button at the bottom, and the touch screen is also responding to vertical and horizontal swipes. Swiping left or right by default gets you to the music player. Surprisingly, there even is possibility to turn up and down the volume - and people with smaller fingers will have better success - but it is remarkable how sensitive the touch screen is!
Few words about the smartphone application - which is still - Mi Fit - and is still designed and maintained by Huami. Few years later - it is not too colorful - as it used to be in the past, and is much better.
I currently am at around 12 days of battery life with 25% left - and I’ve been heavily using the device during this time, including continuous heart rate, sports, notifications and a lot of screen on time. So it can easily last for two weeks, and with a little more conservative usage - up to three. Notifications are very well visible, and vibration is very strong! And it is one of the few bands where you won’t miss any alarms!
Mi Band 4 is perhaps the biggest step up in terms of specs and features. Excellent UI, fantastic battery life, and superb build quality which includes scratch-resistant glass. For around 30 dollars! No NFC, no GPS, and no automatic sports tracking and one of these is a dealbreaker. And yeah - it is so much better than Mi Band 3! Are you going to upgrade? Comment below.

3:33 A bit of a correction in this part. If the strap binds to the Mi Band only by the recessed sides of the pod, then straps from the Mi Band 3 and 4 are interchangeable. *You might have a problem when using straps that wraps around the bottom or top part of the pod* , those are the parts in which the Mi Band 4 have more girth. How do I know this? From my own idiocy. I bought this metal strap supposedly for the Mi Band 3 thinking it would fit on my brand-spanking-new Mi Band 4. You know how that turned out

As someone who's had every version of the Mi band, I cannot recommend 4 enough! It still has crazy battery durability, same physical design as 3 so you can use most straps, the amount of customized displays becomes bigger every day, music controls, etc. It's also becoming widely available for under $40 for the global version, so if you spot a deal go ahead and grab it!!!

Upgraded to mi band 4 when it launched.. coming from the 2.. skipped the 3.. it did not disappoint.. only one minor gripe. I couldn't control my music while i was using the running feature.. good thing my bt headphones have their own controls.. hopefully will be resolved on the next update.. so yeah everything is awesome.. got me about 6 extra bands already too..

(Here's an update) Not only in the exercise features can you not control your music (this is during btw) but also while you're in the stopwatch and countdown timer.. but like I've said, i have other ways for music controls thankfully.. the band is still good in my book.. it's just software. So I'm hopeful for a fix in the future.

Watching these things in action I would have thought this type of device could be used as an early warning for an earth quake, just make a little more sensitive and place them in various locations, hook them up to a computer and have the computer send out the info to someone who could understand the data. I mean these are very cheap to make yes, so they could be splashed all around the area and they could pick up trembles that the one big device might miss. Or could be used in conjunction with the big device as a back up. Not only would be useful for that but it might actually be of use for predicting giant waves as well, because these things have multiple uses. It's just a thought mind I find these things somewhat unreliable but that's probably to do with the firmware.

Thank you for your suggestion to use Notify&Fintess for Mi band. I will try this app. Unfortunately, I do not like my Mi band 3 because it is only a toy. And as I see from your video improvement is shown only in brightness. For me, the biggest problem with Mi band 3 is that sensor of heartrate is working unstable. Some times it unexpectedly increases the measurement of heart rate. It is very nasty because when I set a threshold to notify me about high heart rate some times it starts to vibrate even though my heart rate is normal and I at first can not rely on this measurement and load myself on 100% and at the second I was frightened by this fake rate. Also, I can not find a good silicon strap for Mi band 3 because the original is small for me. I bought a beautiful metal strap but it weights a lot and can not be used in sports activities. So can I ask you to test Mi band 4 deeper? For instance to set a threshold on heartrate on 150 and others and try to run several times in normal (to be sure that your heart rate does not have to get over number that was set) temp 3-10 km and notice if it will hit that point of heartrate. And do other tests of heartrate sensor.

Mine finally arrived today. So it plays music from your phone and uses gps in your phone does that mean when running you have to have your phone with you to listen to music and track your run?

It is another smartwatch/smartband released by Huami (same company that does Mi Band, different Brand). It is outstanding and has GPS embedded, as well as transflective display and the insane 45 days battery life.

Yeah, it is fascinating! THis band is almost perfect - just add a GPS and it will rock.

3:48 - The Mi Band 3 doesn't have an AMOLED display it's just an OLED.

Not available in the Mi Fit app, but might be in "Notify and Fitness Pal for Mi Band"

Do you know if there is a fix for the steps? Because even if I am commuting or in a transportation, it counts the drive as steps too

It will get better with new firmware updates. Note that sometimes steps are not being displayed in real-time - meaning that it may increase the counter after you make 100 more and it may trick you.

Do you think one should switch to mi band 4 when he already have mi band 2..as when connected to mobile, even band 2 gives almost all stats.. Even continuous hr & gps.. Then what makes this band 4 more advanced? What is your view?

I feel it as quite an upgrade - yes. Greatest advantage is the screen and the continuous heart-rate info. If that is not important to you - then - the Mi Band 2 is still great - great battery life and also very accurate tracking.

That was essentially going to be the deciding factor between the fitbit inspire and the Mi 4 for me. Is there any particular setting o needed for the same or is it automatic? I noticed that you have to manually select running, swimming, etc.

Hey - that's why I try to keep an eye on the comments, because this community is meant to help each-other. ANd yeah - it is possible; It can work well with any smartphone that supports bluetooth and can run the Mi Fit app (minimum Android version should be 5.)

I have a question I live in Bulgaria, and here, we write in Cyrillic. The problem is that when I get messages in Cyrillic, it appears as boxes filled with question marks for each symbol. Do you know if the mi band 4 supports that, bc I saw the GPS location for Sofia, which is where I live

Hi Petar - I have the same problem with AMazfit Verge Lite, which I use with the AMazfit App. Are you using the Amazfit App or the Mi Fit App? Perhaps it will be soon fixed with an update. One thing I haven't tried yet is switching the Phone Language to Bulgarian - perhaps worth checking too.

They are very similar. With the CHinese version you can have Chinese or English language, with the international - some more are supported. If the price difference is small, get the international.

Colorful and brighter screen , larger screen with colors in band 4 , better screen protection (tempered glass not plastic like mi band 3) , better software (+music control) , better vibration , better capacitive button
