This seat might have saved the driver's back/ribs/shoulders. Cars and cabins are not designed to withstand hard hits but to amortize the impact to save people inside. So, chinesium is actually a better seat material. ;) You can buy a new seat, but not new bones.

@@Sabaxaractually no, a quick snapping of the neck or body in a flimsy seat like that is exactly how you get spinal or other injuries. @longboardguy I'm not sure which type of seat was this one, but he was lucky that seat absorbed the impact energy and cracked a bit under the load while keeping its general integrity. It's simple physics - something needs to absorb the energy of the impact and if that seat would be made of pure titanium he would bounce in that seat and his body tissues would absorb full energy of the impact either through the belt or objects in front. Pure physics - conservation of energy.

To those who are wondering, I can share more details since I watched the original video. He was testing a bunch of EVs on a race track, the test was specifically for the endurance. Apart from this Xiaomi, he also tested Ioniq5N, Tesla Model3, and Porsche Taycan. He specifically left Xiaomi at the end, knowing its brake pad were crap. The other EVs he tested were at least able to finish one lap without overheating here and there. However this Xiaomi, he only wished the car was able to finish just one lap. Before he started the test, his buddy told him to "be safe". I'm pretty sure everyone knew the car would crash due to having huge weight, huge horsepower and tiny brake pad. Yet he still did the test, most likely he was asked to do so by the Xiaomi company as a commercial. Though he was prepared, he still didn't expect the brake to COMPLETELY go away after just a few corners. In his own words "After a fraction of a second, I decided to do the swing instead of head collision, as it was my natural instinct as a racer". He also pointed out that for normal drivers, head-on collision might be the best choice since cars are built to withstand much more force headon than sideways. This guy now have my 100% respect. Imagine driving at more than 200km/h and suddenly realizing brake is completely gone. I wouldn't have survived if I were him.

Former brake engineer here. They did very little brake tuning along with electric motor and they couldnt get the big brake pads to not squeal when used lightly. They decided that the easy fix is to put an unholy sized J chamfer to reduce the braking surface to allow for a higher pressure engagement at low braking requirement. This makes sure that the brake pads are grabbing rotor hard enough not to squeal but does not require significant regen-manual brake tuning. At the end of the day that tiny brake pad surface caused significant brake fade to crash

Why is there more than 1 comment saying the seat breaking is a feature? If the seat fails, your spine becomes the crumple zone. A normal seat should be as rigid and as strong as possible (along with the cabin), while everything outside of that needs to be able to crumple enough to absorb the energy. This was a failure, full-stop
@AwkwardYetАй бұрын

@axelbaltazhar The seat provided no support for his back there. If someone gets rear ended and the seats breaks like this, the spine will *definetly* break too. For those who are wondering, the seat did it's job, just in a slightly sloppy looking manner. It's a safety system that is designed to prevent whiplash, and pretty much all modern cars with decent crash safety standards implement a variation of it. To prevent whiplash, seat backs are design to cushion the rate of impact by moving back a few inches, and lean back. Volvo calls this safety feature WHIPS and have uploaded pretty cool videos on it, but other manufacturers implement similar features. I know some cars even push the headrest upwards as well to prevent extra neck strain. The mechanism that causes the seat to move and lean back actually destroys the seat as well, but usually at the forces that cause trigger this safety feature, the car is practically done for as well. I think he slid sideways because he was spinning out, vs a normal whiplash incident being a rear end collision. Aside from that, shame on the manufacturer for speccing those brake pads. It's probably fine for normal driving, but if you're making a performance car, give it performance brakes.

What's lacking in this particular case is good leadership and mechanical engineers heard and respected by people in power, all data is there to see for anyone who wants to know anything about brake calipers and pads, it doesn't even need to involve your sweaty beerbelly mechanic uncle who you trust more than you should, but someone on the PR or design-team wanted less squeeky brakes on this car so they dumbed down the pads to make them "lighter/milder" to use and less noisy. Xiaomi makes phones as far as your very limited knowledge goes, but in reality, they are a mega corporation who makes much of everything when it comes to electronics/smart home solutions, about on par with Apple; i'm pretty sure they've got the budget to hire good people fit for the job if only they really wanted to, and they probably did, and then some dumb a**hat with power from within made a dumb decision. but what do i know; but moreso, what the actual f*ck do you know? No, I'm not blaming the driver here but he did a few things wrong: He did not let go of the steering wheel and kept his thumbs on the inside. Potentially breaking his thumbs or wrists. Reading these comments is giving me brain worms. Have any of you commenting on the seat bending ever seen what happens to any road car seat in a heavy rearward impact? They all bend. American, European, whatever. And if they didn't bend they wouldn't absorb energy so consequently your body would instead. Or worse, the energy would be redirected in the opposite direction like a spring doubling the effect on the occupant. A racing bucket seat is a hugely different beast to a road car seat and a fully rigid seat with head restraint system will rattle your brain like a rock tin can but at least it stops the side of your head caving in against the roll cage. You shouldn't drive a harnessed head restraint seat with no helmet which is why many countries/states ban 4 & 5 point harnesses for road use. The comments on airbags not deploying, a) it's a rearward collision so the front airbags would not deploy and b) if this is a proper manufacturer supported track testing session the SRS system would most likely be disabled, particularly while wearing a helmet. Those "Blembo" brakes though....what the hell is going on there. There's plenty of other quite legitimate brake options in China or Taiwan they could have used instead of whatever the heck those things are...

Knockoff Brembos on it, wow. 😮
@Lin-zhezhou22 күн бұрын
Xiaomi SU7 uses Brembo's 4-piston brake system. The brake pad size is similar to Tesla Mode Y, but due to the fan-shaped design, the effective friction area is smaller. The weight of the car body exceeds 2 tons, and the brake pads of the sports car race will be worn out after half a race. Therefore, Xiaomi's brakes are not suitable for racing without modification. Don't joke with your life. Xiaomi cars are positioned for home driving. The heavier the car body, the higher the requirements for brakes. Before Xiaomi cars go on the track, in order to ensure the safety of high-speed driving, the brake system needs to be upgraded (replace brake pads, brake discs, brake calipers, brake steel hoses, etc.), at least the brake pads must be upgraded.😂😅😅😅😅
