A good manager has many qualities: understand what matters to the immediate boss and bigger bosses, know what looks good on paper for the company, understand the strengths of each of the team members, foresee/ plan/ execute ways to overcome the shortcomings of each of the team members, motivate the team members to do well on a ongoing basis, know the shortcomings and strengths of him/herself & be able to sell the good to be more than the bad so the company sees his/her value. The above items are things that can be learned. Do them well and I think many companies would want you as a low level manager. Once you learn how to tease out these things, most bosses are also not willing to let you go as an employee.
