Winning that Gold Medal was a badly needed shot in the arm for America that winter. We were faced with a humiliating and unending hostage crisis in Iran, Cold War tensions were heightened by the Soviets invading Afghanistan and we going through what President Carter had termed a "national malaise". It seemed that our best days were behind us. I'm not a hockey fan by any stretch, but I was that week. Thanks guys.

What a 4 years Ken Morrow had. He'd go to the NY Islanders and win the Stanley Cup that same year. Then continue on to the next 3 Stanley Cups for 4 in a row. On the 4th victory they beat an Edmonton Oiler team with a youngster named Wayne Gretzky. Who would go on to beat the Islanders in their quest for a 5th Stanley Cup in a row. Then go on to win 5 out of the next 6 winning their own 4 peat. And the rest is Gretzkory. :)

I watched the games and a few of those goals -- against the USSR and Finland -- etched in my memory forever, same for when Eruzione waved to his team to join him on the podium. Just as incredible and moving now as it was 40 years ago. Too bad this clip ended so soon. What was missed is Herb Brooks' smiling wide after all 20 players were on the podium. Brooks' rarely showed those emotions so that too was special.

People forget the game against the Russians WAS THE SEMIFINAL, they still had to beat Finland to win the gold, I remember the gold medal game was on a Sunday morning February 24, 1980, they had beat the Soviets the previous Friday night

That's true... People were so caught up about beating the hated Russians... what with the cold war still active then... nothing else seemed important.
@plusEV8 жыл бұрын
It wasn't a semifinal, they played a round robin. Had the US lost to Finland, Russia would have won the gold with 2 wins and 1 loss and the US would have won the bronze, tied with Finland at 1-1-1 and losing the H2H.
@chrisbonneu41645 жыл бұрын
@@plusEV It wasn't even a full round-robin. The first round results were carried through so USA vs. Sweden and USSR vs. Finland weren't played in the medal round.

The 1980 Olympic ice hockey tournament was organized into two six-team divisions. Each division played a round robin with the top two teams in each division advancing to the playoff round. The result from each team's game against their other divisional opponent was carried over. The Americans had tied Sweden. The Soviets had two points entering the final round, the Swedes and Americans each had one point. The Finns had zero. By winning their games against the Soviets and Finns, the Americans finished with five points, the Soviets beat the Swedes and finished with three points. Sweden tied the Finns and finished with two points. The Finns came in fourth place with one point.

Technically speaking this was not the Gold Medal game. The result clinched the gold for the US. If the US lost they would have gotten Bronze and Maybe Silver based on the other results. The Soviets would have gotten Gold due to the tiebreaker of Goals For even though they lost to the US. Winning this game clinched gold, but this was not the Gold Medal game, if it were Finland would have gotten Silver, while they placed 4th.

Um, I hate to be a party pooper but did we raise the swedish flag instead of the finnish flag? Could we be more american?
@ryanhuisman53812 жыл бұрын
The medal round had the top 2 teams from pool A and B advance to it. The results against the other team from your own pool during pool play carried over to count toward the medals. So entering medal round play, the Soviet Union had 2 points by their win over Finland during pool play. Sweden and USA each had 1 point because they tied in pool play, and Finland had 0 points. In the medal round, the Finns and Swedes tied, raising Sweden up to 2 points and raising Finland up to 1 point, and the USA beat the Soviets, raising USA up to 3 points and keeping the Soviets at 2. So when people refer to the USA/Finland game as the gold medal game that's not really true, because if the USA had lost to Finland, they'd have 3 points, and since the Soviet Union went on to beat Sweden, the Soviets finished with 4 points. Under that scenario, it would've been Soviets with gold (4 points) Finland silver (3 points) and USA bronze (3points), with Finland getting silver over USA because of their win over USA, in that scenario. Since the USA beat Finland, they finished with 5 points, 2 points for each win over Soviet Union and Finland, 1 point for tie against Sweden. Soviet Union got silver with 4 points, 2 points for each win over Finland and Sweden. Sweden got bronze with 2 points, 1 point for each tie against USA and Finland. Finland only got 1 point, for tying Sweden but losing to USA and Soviet Union.
