If you want to see a big village of Hmong/Miao, just go to Fresno, California, St. Paul, Minnesota and North Carolina.

I'm not sure which branch I would be. I am ethically a 2nd generation Hmong living in America. Learning more about my ancestors and where they are from is very interesting. I want to visit this Miao Village of 1,000 homes in Xijiang also.

Thank you for sharing about this beautiful city of the Miao people. I was there a few years ago. It really is beautiful. What's sad about it is the tourist industry has taken over the village. While Miao people still live there, rich Chinese have bought out many of the the homes, and turned them into hotels, stores, cafes, and very much modernized the city. It is gradually losing its authenticity. While I loved it, I was also very heart broken by it. I'm a descendant of the Miao people.

Uh...we, Miao were push out of our land from the Yellow River Valley all the way to the border of Laos and Vietnam because of various factions of Hans overlord incessant push for the integration of China...we, Miao refuse to join and consolidate our identity as Miao...thus was push out!! This is why you see us Miao peoples mostly clinging to hillsides and mountain tops in china...

Heh, would you mind open your google map satellite and see what it looks like in southern part of China( south of Yangtze river), all hills and mountains, only a few plains, not just Miao but Han and other minorities live in hills and mountains! History is history, move on and live a life

I am a Hmong American, we are no longer like other calling us MIAO. MIAO is an insult word what the Chinese had been long described as a wild animal a wild cat.

Mao is cat 猫. 苗 is Miao. They are different words. The character is made of grass: 艹and field: 田.

are those Hmong or just Miao?
@aliasdoe00710 жыл бұрын
I would argue they are mainly, or exclusively Miao. The Miao did not even know, nor have heard of their Western brethren, the Hmong, until the late 20th century despite sharing some common history, heritage, culture/customs, and ancestry. The same can be said of the Western Hmong with respect to their Miao brethen.
@gaara82177 жыл бұрын
all Hmongs are Miao, but not all Miaos are Hmongs. this particular group has their own name as well. but I don't know what it is. Hmongs outside of China do not like being called Miao because the name became very derogatory in South East Asia.
@arbs3ry6 жыл бұрын
They choose to be called Miao, you without any knowledge of phonetics and Chinese character and know nothing about any history background, it means sprouts and strong in China .In ancient time they're called Man which means barbarian. Who cares what the sound mean /derogatory or not in SE Asia,after all the majority of Miao still live in China and they have nothing to do with SE Asia~ May you RIP.
@lifeyang25 жыл бұрын
There are many subgroups of Miao, like the Hmong. This is because of long history even before the birth of Christ. The Han rulers continued to oppress and separate Miao from each other over and over throughout history, again and again.
@littlecraft1o1animesong515 жыл бұрын
Ray you don’t have any knowledge about history. For me I think the word “Miao” used on the Hmong are a derogatory term because 1000 years ago the Han Chinese call anybody that lives in Asia who isn’t Han Chinese are Miao. 1000 years ago Miao was not a nice word compare to today whatever bullshit they said and changed the definition of it. It’s still a derogatory term for the Hmongs Learn your history

Wearing glittering silver ornament is a part of traditional custom and nothing to do with banks or similar institutions or savings for spending in eventual needs. There are no thieves and crooks in this race or society that is why they wear loads of ornaments with out worries.

They can go wherever they want. Nowadays, more and more younger generation bravely venture out to the cities and learn Mandarin. Many people remain there, where they feel most comfortable. Systematic oppression is another topic.
