Nobody’s mentioned it so far so I will: I haven’t seen this in any other animatics yet, but I love how Ximena gives Penelope a markedly different design compared to what Odysseus remembers/imagines. It definitely adds to the sense and reminds us how it’s been two decades 🥺😌

If I remember correctly the idea is that the arrow has to go through the hole that is used to fit the wooden handle into the metal part of the axe

It's one of the biggest mysteries of the odyssey, because the original text is so vague about it. Contemporary listeners to the original myth would have known the implied orientation, but we don't know what kind of axes they used for the challenge, where the hole was located, how one was supposed to shoot through them cleanly, etc. And we have no images representing the myth either, so we're in the dark. Just like what "lotus" was in the original epic. Opium? Flowers? Literal lotus seed pods? Who knows

OH I LOVE THE REFERENCES TO THE ORIGINAL STORY!! 0:46 You see someone peeking through the door and closing it when Penelope talks about her lie with the shroud which might be a nod to how in The Odyssey, one of the servants found out about her scheme and immediately told the suitors, which led to Penelope being forced to give out the challenge to choose a husband. 1:17 is also a scene from the Odyssey where a wetnurse saw the scar on Odysseus' leg, while he was disguised as a beggar and recognized him as the king.

How beautifully this animatic illustrates the pain and tragedy of Penelope's side of the story, her wait and hardships. Not to mention, how intense her own longing and love is for Odysseus. Throughout the musical, we've seen Odysseus' pain and longing for Penelope and this animatic right here shows that it's every bit as intense for Penelope as well.

The single detail of this Penelope looking way too different to the Siren's version of her, omg! There are stress lines under her eyes, the up-do (?) instead of the ponytail; the tired yet determined look in her eyes instead of the sultry and playful one, which makes a lot of sense; the attire, the eye shape, even the nose shape. No siren would master to replicate this perfection, I can see why Odysseus misses her so bad

it is almost impossible for me to put into words just how much i adore this animatic with all of my very being. every little detail you added was genius and the young odysseus cameos really struck me straight in the heart because it’s a reminder that the last time penelope saw him he was young and bright and that’s how she remembered him up until he finally arrived home. she never got to stand beside him and see him grow with her own eyes because they were separated for so long :((( and oh my god anticlea’s ghost standing outside and waiting for her son even in the afterlife…. i actually screamed 😭😭

i really like that you added the traitor handmaid and the loyal wetnurse. I was hoping someone would add them to an animatic since there wasn't any song(s) that mentions them. I know they are more like side characters, but they did add more to the story. especially the wetnurse. She gave Odysseus information of the suitors, helped him arrange a meeting with his wife( in a couple of retellings), and help gather up other servants who were still loyal to the family to defeat the suitors and their accomplices.

ES HERMOSO 😭💖💖💖 Really, I love how artists make Penelope look older, people forget that people age even more cuz of all the stress and sadness (Ohhh never my eyes are playing trick on me, but someone was in her door? Like I'm the beginning, I wonder if the same lady that was helping Odysseus in disguise, or some spies) She looks so regal and beautiful, the details kill me, how still she has her wedding ring and touches the other side of the bed, the shine I'm her eyes of the even the little hope of Odysseus coming back that day, ohhh the pure hate and zero interest in those suitors, her while boby is saying "I could be your queen but never your wife", I don't know how Penelope could stand there graceful while looking at these smug bastards. THE FLASHBACKS! SHE LOVES HIM SO SO MUCH 🥹 people always talks about how much Odysseus misses his wife, but Penelope? Poor woman she was waiting too, all this time, she never stopped, always with hope in her heart. Why you must hurt me with the images of the dogs and the spirit of the mother, the lovestruck and hopeful face of Penelope in the end broke me 🥺 everyone is waiting 😭.

According to some other comments, the person at her door in the beginning is a servant! In the original Odyssey, the servant apparently found out Penelope was unweaving the shroud, and told the suitors because she liked one of them. The betrayal is insane 😭😭

Including the shade of Anticlea with her waiting melody is so heart wrenching, because I think in that moment, Penelope also was “waiting” but also wanted to do what Anticlea did and start “wading” into the ocean and join Odysseus. (Whom Anticlea thought died in the first storm when Eurylochus opened the wind bag) But Penelope has Telemachus and the barest of bare chances that her love is still alive, so he needs to hold onto that hope as desperately as possible.
