Extremely interesting to compare the Chinese roads with our European Roman roads. Very similar construction method devised completely independently. I think Chinese roads are about 150 years older. When I look at the extensive mountain ranges in China I'm amazed that the ancients ever managed to cross them let alone discover people on the other side!. Did Qin Shihuang also use these roads for an imperial postal system like the Roman empire.?

Not sure. Did Roman highways begin around 300BC?

@@calvinow2172 I need to look it up but seriously doubt it. I'm only good at the history of my own country - UK - at the periphery of the Roman empire from about AD 46 - 400. (UK is smaller than 4 of the Chinese provinces) I lived 20 miles from Cirencester the capital of the second part of Britain, close to the imperial road. There was a station for fresh horses every 11 miles, & inn for food stabling & rest at larger distances. Thus a letter from the Governor could reach Rome in 3 days including the sea crossing over the Channel to France. This is better than the modern postal system. I'd be very surprised if Qin Shihuang didn't devise an equivalent communication system to manage his empire. BTW my own part of the UK - England, didn't even unify under its own monarch, until the Tang dynasty of China. Mr. Qiu Ping often marvels at the wisdom of the ancient Chinese. I find it jaw dropping!
