This is even more artistically deep on a conceptual level that I kind of perceived. Surely figures like Jamie Stewart and Michael Gira are widely respected in the indie-noisy musical scene between the 90s and 2000s, with the philosophy and the general feeling of the music of Swans and Xiu Xiu being deeply nihilistic and sad. When associated with Freddie Mercury and David Bowie, that on the other side sold a positive and hedonistic view on life, Stewart and Gira kind of represent a more grotesque and slightly ironic representation of the two superstars, making this cover a complete deconstruction of the original, both in the sound and the historical collocation, even more if you think about the extremely sad private life of Mercury and Bowie and the conflict these two had between the public and the private life, that are the typical subjects of the psychological breakdowns treated in Xiu Xiu and Swans songs. Generally, the Stewart and Gira version sounds deeply more sincere and sensible, but it's like if Mercury and Bowie didn't make the song to make a big take on the market of the time, but to purely personal purposes. Man how much I love Xiu Xiu covers.
