My local PBS station used to play Silent movies at 10:30 PM, so I'd go to bed early like a good kid but I'd actually stay up watching TV in my room with the sound off (didn't miss it with the Silents) and the lights off, too, so my parents wouldn't catch me. And that is how I watched Nosferatu for the very fist time. Scary as the dickens. Naturally enough, I didn't sleep after that and could NOT tell my parents the next day about the movie that absolutely decimated me. I've never forgotten it, and it has completely wrecked me forever for horror movies. 😆 Still frightening.

This is based on the novel Dracula, where the Count does just that on at least one occasion. (He had minions do it earlier, not because he didn't want to get his hands dirty, but because he literally didn't realize he could do it himself. He didn't realize his own strength.)

What's most interesting about the restoration is that it implies Count Orlok can be out in the sunlight, but this scene is meant to be set at nighttime. Pretty much every shot was filmed during the daytime, but the official film release would have filters put on to imply moods for each scene. When Count Orlok is standing on the boat and running through the streets there would have been a blue filter to imply night. It's not really convincing even back then I bet, but for this restoration it's a lot more obvious that they shot it in the daytime.

Nosferatu is the working man's vampire. None of that aloof nonsense that Count Dracula indulges in, what with finery, fancy coffins, avoidance of the sun....nah. Nosferatu is a real vampire's vampire. A vampire for the masses. And he didn't even outsource the acquisition of his coffin. Total mensch.

I figured this was just some detail about it being shot at day for the free lighting (as opposed to putting up whatever form of stage lighting they had in 1922) and because lots of colour details (i.e. light blue and dark blue) are lost in black and white, so the original footage still looks like it happened at night.
